How much would you be willing to pay Grant? What's your ceiling?

I'd give him $19 mil/per if necessary.

I was just wondering if those Jerami Grant fans might be able to get him that way if you could send DEN a friendly contract or so that helps fill his void for them.

JT is right.  We have room before a hard cap becomes an issue.  If there were somehow two deals with both involving a $5mm spread between incoming and outgoing, then we might get there.  I didn't look it up, but from memory, I think we are about $10mm under.

BTW, I'm enjoying JT the fantasy trader and purveyor of league-wide rumors.

I don't know how much Denver would be willing to pay him. I'm willing to beat it - and his other offers - up to that number.

No...I think some desperate team will do it. Thankfully the Mavs don´t have the capspace. I think 4/60 is a reasonable contract for him.
Thanks Dan. I’ll keep shooting the rock from deep

If I’m denver there’s no way I’d let Grant go. Millsap might be the casualty

And if I'm Grant, I need to get paid if I'm going to leave the Nuggets. The Mavs will probably get to this point soon. The Nuggets are there, even though they're a piece or two away. Millsap is the one who is going to be overpaid by whoever.

Sadly, this is the truth.

I'm also not sure I'd want to be the team to back the money truck up to Grant, but I do like the player.

Millsap and Plumlee are very likely goners if they keep Grant (though I don't know the market for them). If the cap doesn't increase then they are capped out with Grant even at $9M/per.

It will be very interesting to see what they do with team building.

As long as they end up worse for the Mavs' sake, I'll be happy.
I'll go on record and say if there's some chance of getting Grant at the MLE, or near it, I'm in on that.

I agree with others that he's going to get paid, though, and I'm not trying to pay him all star money.

$19 mil isn't all-star money. $15 mil per would be great. Zero question he'd be our third best player. Not hard with our current roster, but that fits the salary scale you'd want.

Of course, there's always the inexpensive way - draft the next Grant.

We should’ve planted our Grant tree 6 years ago. He’d be just blooming by now

My other big argument with you and others was that I fiercely defended the Odom acquisition and the release of Tyson (based on the salary he was asking).

I am still fine that the Mavs went "plan powder" as I do believe they had promises (or leads) from Deron and Dwight's agents.

Just because you fail at something doesn't always mean it is "wrong." I still defend the logic of those decisions based on the AVAILABLE knowledge at the time. I do NOT defend not trading Marion. The evidence at the time said it was time to move him along.

Bad predictions or misjudging a player. I think most of us had similar bad takes.
I was pro Rondo trade. Really thought he was the missing piece for one last run with Dirk.

Let's just get this right from this point forward - it was the Powell trade!

They are hard capped until the end of the 19-20 cycle but any Sign and Trade will have to be after that point. However, a S&T to acquire a player is one of the triggers to a hard cap. My recollection is that the Porzingas extension + Wright S&T were the triggers for the 19-20 HC.

The problem with the hard cap is that it takes Dallas out of the primary market on players under contract when they have draft capital. Waiting until after the draft for the Hard Cap to lift means Dallas is looking at having to make a deal with nothing but the '25 pick as the primary sweetener.

In my estimation Dallas can only make a significant money move if they have an arrangement with a team to do a deal IF a player they like is still on the board and they are willingly patient in consumating that deal AFTER the 2020 equivalent of July 1st.

If I’m understanding you, and it is possible I’m missing what you are saying, I think you are conflating two separate problems.

Yes, we are had capped.  But, that doesn’t keep us from trading Wright + 18 for a player making $5 million more than Wright.  The restriction we face is we just can’’t go over the apron.  Under the apron, we are fine to trade as we wish.

What keeps us from doing a S&T in the current season isn’t being hard-capped.  It is the fact that no one is a free agent until after the current season is over (at that point we will no longer be hard capped).  You are right that it is hard to imagine using a pick to trade for a free agent.  Team A can’t say “draft so and so and I’ll get Joe Free Agent to do a S&T”.  They don’t control Joe Free Agent and there would be a very real possibility of Team A getting stuck with a draftee they don’t want.

Now, it is certainly possible Team B happens to covet someone Team A drafted and the market for their free agent is getting too rich.  The two teams could certainly work something out using the drafted player (unsigned or you have to wait) as part of the package for the S&T player.  The pick, if still unsigned, would count zero in the deal and so there would have to be other salary involved.

BTW, using the BAE on Bobi was another trigger for the hard cap.

Looking back at the last offseason. Why did they even do it? They still had some capspace and basically transfered the remaining cap into a TPE.

Denver has 107 mil of committed salary for next season. We substract the rookie and it leaves some 23 mil to resign Grant, Milsap, Plumlee and Craig before tax line. If Grant commands something around 15 mil, Milsap is probably gone while they can likely resign Plumlee and Craig (if they even want to).

And btw, I don't think anyone will offer 20 per for Grant. Why? A while ago we were discussing signing him for MLE and all of a sudden he is worth 20 per? I think even 15 per is high for him. Unfortunately I didn't watch the game, but his stats are far from being 20 per worthy. What did he do to create such hype?
