Costs them $13 million in space next year. No longer max space. Feels like a Giannis supermax is imminent
They must have received word Giannis is going to Dallas.

Only 13? Seems like they could move things around still for Giannis if they need to.
Buddy Hield was benched in Sacramento because of his poor shooting. It's why he was on the outs with his coach. He didn't like coming off the bench. Suddenly, he's unhappy. In Dallas, where we've only seen his highlights from King's games and OU, he looks to be the perfect player. Hield makes too much money and, like most players, if his shots aren't falling, he looks pretty bad. Pretty bad and over-paid is not that desirable of a combination. IMO.
It makes sense that they wouldn't play with fire and Bams extension. They could make a move or two to free up space if they needed to. Even Butler who they love they would move in a heartbeat to get Giannis. I think the core players left are still good enough to attract Giannis.

His averages are still really good though. If he didn't shoot well last year it didn't show up in his stats. He would be a starter here. I think it's worth the risk bc of the upside over THJ.

No way would they do that if they knew Giannis is available. Bam and Giannis have same agent...
That Bam extension got me feeling some type of way for the Mavs chances at Giannis.

Hope springs eternal I guess. Put me in the skeptical camp. I think Giannis will sign the supermax and put us all out of our misery.

Bam probably got pissed when they asked him to wait until next year, and why wouldn’t he? Good for them on making the right choice, too. I know he’s not as good as Luka, but imagine the Mavs going to Luka and asking him to wait on his rookie max to MAYBE sign someone else.

They’ve gotten this approach all the way to the 5 yard line. Why blow it now? I get it - you guys think Hield is better. I think he’d be good here, too, but not THAT good. Not good enough to take a complete left turn at this point. It just makes no sense.

If things don’t go as planned to start the season, I promise you that having THJ at the trade deadline will be 100x better than having Hield at that time.

The roster is done, my dudes. It’s looking pretty dope to me. They basically added a guy we thought could be a possible target in an #18 trade, only they got him for their LEAST crucial value player, instead. They brought the rest of the young team back for close to maximum continuity, but added FOUR young, intriguing, ATHLETIC players and a large hockey goon while literally only giving up four guys (probably) who weren’t in the rotation last year and had little chance, if any, of being in it this year.

This off-season was a freaking DREAM.

Well as I take it Hield and others aren't on the table atm. I want to see what happens with Giannis. I want to see how the team is playing and if we still need more offense like I think we do. We will have a bit more flexibility with contracts in season.

I am not rushing and I think this is the team we have at the start of the year. But talking in season moves.. I still want Hield.
I would like Hield, too. Been saying it for weeks. But, I have a feeling there will be way better options at the deadline.

Well if Giannis does sign the super-max we can fasten our seatbelts again, cause then there is no reason for the Mavs to hold back anymore and they will intensify their immediate upgrade purchase. Try harder on Hield, Gordon, Lavine, Collins, J. Allen, Markkanen, WCJ or make reasonable offers for Porter, Oladipo or Derozan, because extensions become more likely.

Have you seen Buddy Love? #WhereIsBuddy
The 2021 class looks really mediocre if Giannis stays with the Bucks. It´s basically Gobert and some guys with player options (LBJ, George, Kawhi). Some injury-prone maybe allstars like Oladipo. And guys like THJ, Richardson, Porter. Good starters but nothing more.

Been saying that for a year while listening to "2021 class is not just Giannis" and "2021 class is loaded"... If GA goes of the table, it makes so much more sense to try to make our moves before FA. Especially now that the team is set with a bunch of young players. Trade the big expiring contracts, future picks and (if needed) role players like Kleber, DFS. Keep starters (JRich, KP, Luka) and the cheap young guys.

Of course realistically, these opportunities will not appear before TDL.
We haven't discussed him or very little if so...
But I've been seeing John Collins name thrown around a bunch here lately around the web. It makes sense based on Gallo signing and their draft + move for Capella.

Not sure what they would be wanting in a trade. But if you could get a trade done, his cap hold is only 10 mill next year. Perhaps that type of guy is the move we make. It's the HIBW plan by getting better in season AND preserving cap space. You basically only have to dump Powell on someone for max cap space.

I looked for another guy like that that is coming off his rookie contract at the end of the year and found nothing. What a cluster of a draft outside of like 5 guys.

Another non Mav observation. Still waiting for final numbers, but bumber of teams currently in tax has increased substantially from last season. Miami, Minnesota, Portland and OKC were the only tax teams last season. Minnesota and OKC are out of tax, but Lakers, Clippers, Toronto, Houston, GSW, New Jersey, Philadelphia and several others are deep in the tax atm. Who knows, if some of them will be looking to cut their salaries by TDL
With the cap lower than was expected, you’d think there would be a tipping point where it becomes difficult to get off of salary

Who are you looking at?

Everything below of course assuming GA has signed his max contract. I also assume moves would be made at TDL, not now.

The forum favorites that look like they might be traded at some point are Hield or LaVine as offensive upgrades of THJ, while being same level good on defense. You have Gordon as potential upgrade at PF (not really sure if he is an upgrade), another possible candidate could be Turner. If Mavs are intrigued in Oladipo I rather trade THJ (and minor assets) now than wait for free agency.

I would have to do the math, but I think we would still have a realistic path to 15-20 mil of cap space with a single move from candidates above. This should be enough to target the likes of OPJ, White and similar in free agency.

As I have already listed, best 2021 free agents are: Oladipo, OPJ, Schroeder, Fournier Oubre in the UFA and Collins, Isaac, White in the RFA class. I am affraid you will need to offer max or near max to get Oladipo, Collins or Isaac.
