Yeah, I think this finishes the debate how positive contracts Wright and Jackson were...
If Wright was that bad, why isn't DET receiving the picks? OKC just fleeced them? Jackson was the dump, I believe.
Two 2nd rounders is fair, but Detroit is so dumb. They should've taken one of them for Wright

I think 2 2nds is pretty pricey to just give up 2 role players. Especially considering the Mavs are already limited in the pick cupboard.

Dirk more than deserved that money not just because he is the GOAT, and for everything he did for this franchise. But also because he took massive paycuts several times in the last decade to give the Mavs an outside shot in free agency. Cuban didn't just hand out 25 mil to Dirk because he wanted to. He did it because he owed Dirk the biggest IOU in the history of the NBA.

I think Barea has done some great things for the Mavs, but he isn't even in the same stratosphere in Mavs history as Dirk. He's not even top 10 in importance of success in Mavs history.

Four 2nd round picks to take Wright for a spin. Not bad.

Jackson shouldn´t even enter the discussion. He was a small expiring contract. Somebody should send Sam Presti some Lowe Post podcasts, so he understands that Delon Wright was an asset. Angry

So that's what I don't get. You would have thought that Detroit would have gotten a 2nd out of the deal. So that makes me think maybe Detroit was fine with Wright "for free" (ie meaning he is neutral or slight positive in value) but they needed a "dump" team to make all the math work. So OKC came in and offered their services to make the 3 way possible. Mavs needed to exchange both players for something more useful (Johnson) + shed 2021 money. Detroit liked Wright but had no use for Jackson. Thus OKC is the one that cashes in on making the transaction happen.

So in that sense Jackson was negative in that there was no team that wanted him for free so you had to give up the 2 rounders. It's sad how bad the Barnes trade was.

Detroit also needed to dump current year salary without taking as much back. They even had to stretch Dedmon, right? To sign all those scrubs they for some reason needed right now........ I think we paid OKC for them. One 2nd to OKC for DET to send out Ariza while taking back less. One 2nd for DAL to swap Jackson/Johnson with OKC. We just paid the price for both teams since Wright was a negative asset

Edit: Detroit saved $3.8 million in current year salary. That’s a big deal
I think @"Jason Terry" has this one pegged.

If it wasn't for 2011 Barea, there wouldn't be a 3rd scorer for all those series.

If it wasn't for 2011 Barea, there wouldn't be a 2nd round sweep of the Lakers.

If it wasn't for 2011 Barea, there wouldn't be a 1st Mavs championship.

JJ came up huge in 2011. I don't disagree. Like I don't want to disparage JJ. I like him alot (even when Barea Ball is in full swing). But JJ isn't getting his number retired. He's not being handed nearly 3 million because Cuban likes him.

No one is in the same stratosphere in Mavs history as Dirk.

But yes, Dirk actually earned it already because of the paycuts he took - afaia JJ didn't do that.

So what remains is the sheer respect for someone who was decisive in our championship run.

And because of that, you treat him fair. But a non-guaranteed contract would already be unfair, because that would already influence the final decision, as he'd be the only candidate who cut be cut without a financial loss. So from that point of view, he wasn't handed money but only a true fair chance to compete for the roster. Nothing less, nothing more.

And to me, that's the least he's earned.

https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/lo...0430550643&mt=2 9-10 mins.

I mean Cubes went on the Locked on Mavericks podcast and the host asked him straight up if you're thinking about retiring JJ's number and he flat out said no. "You know, I want retired jersey's to be rare. I want them to be very rare. You know? Maybe we'll do a Ring of Honor type thing you know. Um, but its not something I've even thought about right now. I mean JJ, JET, guys who have been here, that were in here 10 years, Fin, um, that were here and had a big impact, Mark Aguirre, those types of guys you gotta give consideration its just what are we going to do? Haven't given a lot of thought"

Straight from Cubes. He's never going to retire JJ's jersey, but he will honor him in some way, he just doesn't know how to.

So if you still want to take that bet, I'm all for it.

Tyson had a much bigger impact, and we all saw how the MBT prioritized giving him money that summer. Frankly there is a clear hierarchy to that 2011 team. It was Dirk----universe sized gap- Terry---Kidd----and then everyone else. And its pricisely that reason why I don't think the Mavs are just handing the contract to JJ under the guise that they're going to cut him in a week just because they want to be nice. I truly think that Carlisle, Donnie, and Cubes think he can still play and they still want him on the team, but because of circumstances he has to earn his spot. I doubt they cut him just because "We Love our Boys in Blue"

Exactly. He was handed a chance to compete, not because they're being charitable. And knowing RC's personal love for JJ and proclivity to play small, I think there is a VERY real chance JJ makes it, and someone like Iwundu will get the axe. Add on top of it JJ's relations with Luka and KP, and how Barea knows Carlisle's system inside and out, I think it's stacked in JJ's favor.

Or perhaps I'm totally wrong. MBT is a charity and just handed JJ a gold watch worth 3 mil and they all ride off in their separate ways as a thank you for everything. Or perhaps there's a trade brewing? Who knows?

I wouldn't go too deep into whose imapct was how big, as ultimately it took each and everyone.

Yet them not giving anything even to a champion only underlines my argument, that the principle of performance still tops everything, even everlasting gratefulness to a champion.
Would be great if something came out that extra players were allowed this year to deal with COVID issues that arise over 72 games.

I suppose that the 2-way players are kind of a way to do that, but I really don’t want us to cut any of these players aside from Barea if it really was a prearranged deal.

1) Cuban is handing someone ELSE a bunch of money.

OR

2) There is a trade in the works.

I think JJB getting handed money makes the most sense of the three. Time will tell.

They've taken more guaranteed contracts than they can keep before. Might be to generate camp competition or that they're genuinely undecided on the top 15 or 17.
I think the NBA subsidizes vet min contracts so as to even the playing field for older players. So even though JJBs contract is over 2 mil I think the cost to the Mavs might be more like 1 mil? You can correct me if I am wrong but I recall something like that.

So if JJB is released he will get the money but Cubes isn't paying the full amount so it's kind of a sweet deal. I do think it's like a thank you for years of service.

Possibly a basketball component to it as well. He gets to be there for training camp and prove he’s in basketball shape. Then when Jan/Feb comes around and we make a trade he will take a roster spot we create
