Moves this off-season are TRICKY.
Mavs are hard-capped to about $10 million of additional salary before the draft and can't really sweeten a deal with #18.

After the draft the Mavs can't trade a pick until 2025.

That said I am not opposed to uniting Tobi, Bobi, and The Don if it can be done advantageously.

Can Hardaway and Wright get you close to Harris on a salary dump of Nuclear Winter proportions?

BTW Burke on a 120% of Vet Minimum might be a chance if other teams spend the MLE on bigger fish or go into cost saving mode.

Quite a few guys on here love Otto Porter...interesting

I still stand by my statement that the best fit and highest upside player to target is Aaron Gordon

He is Jeramy Grant on steroids

Check out these highlights of Gordon vs. the Lakers. If this does not make you want this kid then im sorry.

He still has not reached his ceiling as a player

Hopefully it means we treat the draft like something actually worth investing in. It seems to be like a good year not to have a high pick with a super weak top end, but perhaps pretty good depth (particularly of the type of role players we really need). I wonder if we could trade a future second to move up with 31 and somehow nab both Bey and Lewis Jnr.

I like it. I genuinely believe the system we play (and Luka), elevates certain players shooting stats. You put Gordon on a team where he isn't relied on to be anything other than a 3rd option slasher and spot up shooter, and he can be a 2 way beast IMO. He just can't play the way the offensively challenged Magic want him to as a primary wing creator.

I also love OPJ the player, but I definitely do not love his injury record. If he can have a healthy season, he'd be a pretty good FA option though.

I love Gordon, I just think the Mavs will prioritize powder over an actually good player in Gordon. I would be willing to give up a lot to get him here. The MBT always thinks well why should we give up anything, we'll just grab one of these star FA's next offseason for nothing but capspace.
I was HUGE on OPJ before he got sent to the Bulls. Honestly, I was disappointed when he ended up there instead of Dallas since I thought they could’ve sent Barnes to Washington, or tried to make it a 3 team deal (like reroute Randolph + assets to Washington). Unfortunately, I think the trade with the Bulls happened before the Mavs/Kings one. That said, I think he would fill some holes on this team, and if you can get him without sending THJ, maybe it could push THJ into that 6th man role

So not always, when something unbelievable falls in their laps, they don't say no.

KP wasn't signed with open cap space but acquired via trade which most of us agree is the way you get these guys.

Our "wins" from cap space are Chandler Parsons, Harrison Barnes, Wes Matthews and sort of Deandre Jordan.

Yes, I was responding to SBJ's "always", but regarding "something unbelievable falls in their laps"...how did KP fall in their laps? I may have ranted about plan powder post championship louder and longer than anyone, so I think I earned the right to say something positive when it's warranted. It looks to me like the Mavs did way more than having something fall in their laps during pursuit, trade, relationship building and resigning. The Mavs took a one star team with HB and DSJ as their assets and became a two star team winning playoff games in their first season together. No reason to downplay how awesome that is in order to criticize the horific decisions of the past. We can just tell the truth about the bad and the good.
@"fifteenth" my position is that the Mavs have been obsessed with cap space since 2012 and that's been the case. They value cap space over trades for any player that is not a star. The KP trade was great and it leveraged the MBT's nuclear winter idea which actually panned out for this one unique circumstance.

The thing I was commenting on is that I would much rather have a Gordon-type even if they aren't a "star" rather than thinking hey we can sign somebody like that in 2021 with all this cap space. As we saw last offseason, we had cap space and Curry was the only asset we came away with. We shed Barnes for basically nothing when he could have been a potential asset on a 1 yr deal. That's my issue.

With no 2019 cap space there was never gonna be KP in Mavs jersey.
Having expiring contracts going into the season, having some patience and being smart are keys. No need to blow them in first opportunity.
The odds of expirings + no picks after draft night? netting another star player are almost zero. Most star players are moved for players of value + picks. I think MBT will do it anyway just because they like to keep their "powder dry." They just tend to think they can sign anybody they want with enough cap space.

VOTE!

Man, filling some pages up today. Interesting.

Just voted. Very interesting questions.

I wonder what the results will be like. I included some of our very own board terminology in the written response. Plan Have It Both Ways (Thanks Dan!) would be the most successful off season for me. Upgrading/remaining highly competitive while keeping options open is the best of both worlds
