Quote:Dallas Mavericks Receive: C Andre Drummond

Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: PF Maxi Kleber, C Dwight Powell, PG Delon Wright, 2020 No. 31 overall pick

Getting Drummond is a two-part plan for the Mavericks, one that helps them be competitive in 2020-21 and opens up cap space for a run at Giannis Antetokounmpo in free agency.

With Powell still recovering from an Achilles injury suffered in late January, the Mavs could use Drummond as their starting center alongside Kristaps Porzingis. As a two-time All-Star and the NBA's best rebounder again this past season (15.2 boards, 26.0 total rebound percentage), Drummond would give Luka Doncic another big body to use as a screener and lob target.

While his presence could help Dallas make a deep playoff run, his expiring $28.8 million contract may actually be more valuable.

If the Mavericks want to open up space for Antetokounmpo in 2021, this deal gives them an extra $28.4 million to do so by trading the contracts of Powell, Kleber and Wright. Dallas would then have roughly $55.9 million in committed salary going into 2021-22, giving the Mavs more than enough cap space to try to sign the two-time MVP.

For Cleveland, this is about maximizing assets and getting the best draft pick in the 2020 second round.

Instead of losing Drummond for nothing in free agency or risk giving him a monster contract, the Cavs instead get three rotation veterans to fill in around their young core. Kleber, Powell (when healthy) and Wright could all be flipped later for picks or young players as well.

Cleveland has the No. 5 overall pick but no other selections, so picking again at No. 31 a year after getting Kevin Porter Jr. at No. 30 overall would be wise.

This is kind of interesting from a HIBW's standpoint.  It works pre-draft with Jackson in place of Maxi.  Bigs = Drummond/KP/Maxi/WCS?   AND you offload Wright and Powell?  Absolutely.

If they insist on Maxi, maybe #18 is used on a perimeter big.  It certainly clears the decks from a cap standpoint.  Drummond is a Schwartz client.  I know the board will lose its mind over Maxi being included in something like this, but we can fill the slot.  If Powell and Wright are part of the deal, the Gallinari MLE offer could be multi-year (or Millsap or a number of others) and still have GA money in 2021.
That Drummond deal is great if you're a plan powder guy - all the problems removed in one fell swoop. However, it has the effect of more or less wasting this coming year. To say Drummond doesn't fit is the understatement of this millennium. "Center next to KP" - LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL Much less the defense-less dinosaur that is Drummond. Schwartz might be a little grumpy when we bench his client the whole year.

Only thing I like is it keeps 18. But y'all knew I'd like that.
I suppose if Powell was included, it would make some sense. Things would be setup.

But I don't know if I have the life-force to watch the on-court results. The whole season would turn into waiting for Free Agency.

You forget that Mavs have it written in their bylaws that at least one payer on the roster is from Würzburg.  Maxi can't be part of any deal.

Literally every single article Swartz ever creates that mentions anything remotely about Dallas is so far off that if I had to bet my life on him making a trade that even made a little sense for Dallas I'd be dead by the 2nd paragraph.

And I'm probably one of the few that likes Drummond. No way does DAL give up probably their most impact defender and a pick just to shed some salary along with Drummond. KP is our 5. Drummond wouldn't start here.

I think the Mavs could get more value if they broke apart Wright, Powell, Kleber, and the pick all in separate deals rather than blowing it all on Drummond.

I´d do that trade before you can say ....dary.

Clean our two worst contracts for losing Kleber+31. Saric and Gallinari will be available for the MLE. Worst case it´s Bertans.

Powell/Kleber or Drummond/Saric. That is such a tough choice.

Or maybe Dallas could flip Drummond's expiring contract to OKC in a S&T for Gallinari to offer him more than the MLE. And depending on the contracts going out in the deal, still have that GA money.

Unloading tons of future salary commitments opens up lots of opportunities beyond the immediate trade. You've gotta think big picture. So even though I'm not a huge Drummond fan, I find the proposed deal kinda fascinating.

If we want a guy to just protect Luka, I'll take Beasley for the vet min. Still think he's got something in him (no minutes though).
Personally someone that I would love to pair with Luka in the long run is Mikal Bridges. Maxi + Brunson + # 18..not sure if that's enough ..

A very made-up trade that will never happen.

Gallinari for MLE - Yes

Drummond - Bold plan that just might work, said a Knick fan somewhere.  Actually, its not a bad plan.  I just hope we get someone(s) Smile worth that cap space money if Giannis fall through.  Odds are certainly against him coming here.

Clippers trade Kawhi?  Ballmer may be mad but he is not crazy.

No chance for Kawhi.  Outside chance for Playoff P.  Decent chance for PatBev and Sweet Lou.

I think the thing that is easy to miss here is Gallinari is a TON better than Maxi.  Maybe it isn’t Dano.  Maybe it is another over MLE player who wants to play for a contender.  But, if you can make Powell and Wright go away, you can use the MLE to replace Maxi on a multi-year basis and still have room for Giannis.

I like Maxi too, but he isn’t irreplaceable and if Drummond eliminates Powell Wright and the cost is 31 and swapping Maxi for a MLE plus level talent...sign me up.
Well if you trade Powell and Maxi together to a good home, they would have each other and I would feel better.  Tongue

I don't see why the Cavs do that deal.
In a podcast, Hollinger just suggested:

Orlandon sends Aminu and a 2nd rounder to Dallas for Delon Wright.

Both he and Duncan ultimately decided that Dallas wouldn't do the deal (because 2021) but I thought it was an interesting glimpse into Wright's trade value. Aminu isn't really at a value high point these days.
