Everything below of course assuming GA has signed his max contract. I also assume moves would be made at TDL, not now.

The forum favorites that look like they might be traded at some point are Hield or LaVine as offensive upgrades of THJ, while being same level good on defense. You have Gordon as potential upgrade at PF (not really sure if he is an upgrade), another possible candidate could be Turner. If Mavs are intrigued in Oladipo I rather trade THJ (and minor assets) now than wait for free agency.

I would have to do the math, but I think we would still have a realistic path to 15-20 mil of cap space with a single move from candidates above. This should be enough to target the likes of OPJ, White and similar in free agency.

As I have already listed, best 2021 free agents are: Oladipo, OPJ, Schroeder, Fournier Oubre in the UFA and Collins, Isaac, White in the RFA class. I am affraid you will need to offer max or near max to get Oladipo, Collins or Isaac.
Jonathan Isaac?  Who would give him max?  He’s going to miss the whole season next year.
I see the positivity of the draft/free agency lasted about 24 hours and we are back to "OMG we get nobody". Big Grin

I miss the days, when I got to be the resident....

Did the Bulls offer Markkanen a max extension? NO.
Did the Magic offer Isaac a max extension? NO.
Did the Hawks offer Collins a max extension? NO.
Did the Nets offer Allen an extension? NO.
Did the Pelicans offer Ball an extension? NO.
Did the Raptors offer Anunoby an extension? NO.

That´s six young players you can make a big offer, too.

You have no idea what happens in the meantime. The trade market is always moving.

The 2022 UFAs list includes Bradley Beal, Zach Lavine and Marcus Smart.

How many of those you see as legit third "star"? Collins and Isaac perhaps, the rest are role players.

We are players in 2022 FA if you keep just Doncic and KP on the roster. You really want to tie 90 % of cap to three players? 2021 is the last FA year we should have for a long long time.

I have been checking that too, but they would want a lot for sure. I guess if they miss on Bogdanovic, perhaps an offer of THJ+Kleber plus a bunch of picks could persuade them.
If no Giannis and you find out Isaac isn't damaged goods then throw some money at him as soon as allowed...

I´m not looking at them from a perspective of 2022 free agency, but rather that the players enter the final years of their contracts. Beal could demand a trade. Chicago will make a decision on whether and how much they want to pay Lavine. The day after the 2021 draft we only owe one more 1st round pick.

We could acquire or sign one of these RFAs. I think Collins/Allen will be available in the 20-22M range, which should leave the Mavs enough space to then make a big trade offer to the Bulls for example: Kleber, WCS, Burke, Brunson, and two 1st round picks for an expiring Lavine.

We come back with a young core of

Doncic/Terry
Lavine/Green
Richardson/DFS
Collins/Bey
Porzingis/Veteran BAE

Looks pretty good to me. DFS can slide into the line-up at 2 or 4 to make it above average defensively.
Some Mavs nuggets from this podcast: https://theathletic.com/podcast/154-77-m...episode=72

Brian Dameris, former Mavs FO guy, said on the latest podcast episode of 77 Minutes in Heaven

that “he heard Mavs want a 3rd star as an insurance if one of the current 2 goes down”. He said “they saw what happened in the playoffs last season” when Porzingis couldn’t play.

He also said they were dangling Brunson to move up the draft, but it did not pan out.
In the same podcast he also said they won’t rush Porzingis back. Followill added that KP might be out 3-6 weeks depending on how conservative they are.
I would love Jonathan Isaac.  Perfect Perfect Perfect.  I don't know how much to pay him post injury.  He was so dominant before he got hurt.

So that means Porzingis will be out nearly six months with a torn meniscus and people will say that´s a normal recovery time, like 18 months for an ACL.

I´m no opposing the Mavs being cautious, but that means from his first 100 Mavs games, he´ll miss like 40%. Probably how the Knicks envisioned this going. They just didn´t anticipate that Luka would become THE next guy (so fast).

Anyway I only see one solution, when you look for a star that can cover PG for Doncic and C for Porzingis at the same time. Any chance he´s an UFA next summer. Big Grin

Paying Allen 20 mil is nuts. Why would you do that? Collins will be 25 mil and higher for sure, probably max (a lot of hungry teams there in 2021 - just look at the contracts signed this offseason).

Unless you lift protection from 2023 pick, you still have only 2027 to trade. If you lift the protection, you can trade 2025.

I am just saying - if there is opportunity, we should trade in 2020/21, not wait for desperation time in 2021.

What nearly six months are you speaking about? He had operation on 9th of October, which makes 9th of January 3 months after the surgery. So if he is back in January, he misses less than 4 months. They also said on the same podcast, that this injury was not wear/tear related, so no need for heavy load management once he is totally healed.
I’d much rather have Anunoby than LaVine or almost all of the other RFA’s from the upcoming class.  Maybe you can make an offer while Toronto is trying to use its cap room on bigger fish and make life difficult (or if they do get Giannis, at least you steal a nice consolation prize.

If GA resigns, I am sure extending Anunoby will be Torontos first order of business.

The only way this would be possible would be before they sign GA (so basically you give up on him). They will certainly keep Anunoby low cap hold with the intention to resign him after they get their fish. So, if you offer big QO, it might make them turn it down. But, would you offer north of 20 mil for him?

He had his surgery around mid-September, which if he were to come back 6 weeks after the season starts (end of January) would put his recovery time at a hair under 5 months. 12-26 weeks is the standard recovery time for a meniscus repair surgery. KP would be well within the standard recovery timeline.

The fact that the Mavs want to be conservative and push his recovery time an extra  6 weeks shouldn't really be alarming.
Meh on all these guys that aren't Giannis. I mean there are some okay names but they aren't any better than names in the trade market imo. I still am team Buddy Hield once Giannis signs his Supermax. I understand wanting the third star but I think landing said third star is more easily done through having several good players you can throw at a team with an unhappy star. In the meantime you will be really good.

While I believe you need a good backup plan for KP, I don't think that means a star player is your own backup plan. Luka is good enough that you can survive without KP for some time. Mavs were so thin in their front court, I think that did them in more than just KP not being there. Mavs didn't have good perimeter defense and they didn't have enough front court bodies. Scoring wasn't an issue.

LaVine is the only guy who to me is semi-plausible sort of almost star that you might be able to get at some point, perhaps next offseason. If he is unhappy with the Bulls and expiring then at that point he could force is way out.

For my money I would see if I could do THJ for Hield straight up which the Kings might do.

The Accountant - good for him.
Just bring in all the guys we plan on signing. Stay over the cap and re-sign them all. Keep the MLE

Ask me again in July.  I think Anunoby is going to be a stud.

Yes, I understand Dallas at that point would have bailed on Giannis.  But, I think we have a huge problem in waiting around for Giannis in that we may lose both Richardson and THJ.  What if both look really good here (or even just one of them).  Would I rather have a 20% at Giannis or grab Anunoby and retain Richardson?  I might take the latter.
