I'm a little disappointed about this.

This probably means that either WCS or Chriss is gone soon. I'm ok if Chirss and Brown are the ones left standing, but I kind of think it's a mistake to lose that WCS contract before the tdl. And, I think it's a mistake to carry this many bigs (Boban included) in general.

Bye WCS.
Coming back to the luxury tax topic. Not a guarantee for more success but it certainly is a competitive advantage. Cuban going for it in the summer could make a big difference. Let´s use an easy example to highlight this.

Mavs make a trade at the deadline and use the TPE and/or Burke expirings contract to upgrade the roster. Can add assets in a trade and go for a better player or absorb a worse contract to collect assets.

Are the Nuggets willing to pay salary tax? Could the Mavs steal a guy like Monte Morris if they add a few 2nds?

Would the Suns give up their late 1st this summer to get out of Shamet´s or Saric´s contract? Would the Knicks return the 2023 pick if the Mavs absorb Kemba´s contract?

Added assets (Let´s say a late first or two second round picks) are the perfect preparation for a bigger draft day trade. After a full season and another playoff run with THJ and KP as the highest paid players the Mavs should have a better idea about the roster and the future of individual players.
The combination of the Mavs own 2022 1st and the added pick/s could be attached to various combinations of players.

To keep it simple is I will just assume that both Brunson and DFS return for a combined salary in the 25m range. With the added salary of a deadline trade that would put the Mavs deep into the luxury tax range (170-180m total salary). Sounds like a lot but that´s what teams like the Warriors, Nets or Clippers are paying right now. With Lakers and Bucks only slightly behind.

Haven't really put a lot of thought into what would actually make sense, but as you know I'm still in the camp that believes the team would improve through KP's subtraction. I know you disagree, and I know we're monitoring the next 20 games or so closely, as per our discussion.

Of the examples you mentioned, I would probably do the Hayward and the Simmons deals. Forward is where I believe the team is light, personally. DFS is really the only one on the roster. I don't really want any part of the McCollum situation.

Good decision. And thankfully not the cheap one. Brown is raw but he has shown enough to earn the roster spot. Now they just need to waive WCS and sign Chriss to a two year vet min deal (like Frank).

Isn't WCS's deal only partially guaranteed this season? I think waiving him (rather than using that enticement as a trade sweetener) might be more on the cheap side than what I was hoping for.

And don't sleep on the idea that they're about to let Chriss' 10-day expire and wish him luck. I think that's very possible, though I hope it's not what happens. All we know now is that one of the 3 players at Chirss' position who are less useful than he has been deemed safe, so one of the easily identifiable options to keep him is gone.
KP/Brunson...

I don't know Pels needs...I don't think they need Brunson and I don't know who their center is....

But KP/Brunson for Ingram?

They get two young players to build around if they thinking of tearing it down.   Or at least get to an injection of new talent.

We get Ingram.  Good long scorer to pair with Luka.  I also think Ingram can be good on defense if on a good team and he cares

Dumb trade?

Judging by contracts and recent rotation trends, I wouldn't sleep on the idea of Chriss getting Frank's spot.

(*ducks for cover*)

My biggest question about Ingram is whether he cares more about basketball or weed.

Another distasteful idea that I think is very possible.
I’m honestly encouraged by this news,
- If Brown had no value around the league Dallas could’ve waived him and signed him to open 2-way…but they didn’t so that signals that either Dallas or other teams value him
- Also makes me think they have other (now more favorable avenues) to open a roster spot for Chriss
- Other teams are opening up a roster spot pre-TDL and I’m curious to see if Dallas will open a spot for the deadline or just for Chriss

I’m hopeful that this isn’t the case, but Frank’s reduction of minutes in the past few games and contract makes me think this is possible.
On the other hand, I believe I remember reading that Kidd pushed hard to sign Frank, so I’d be kind of surprised to see one of Kidd’s acquisitions get cut (salary aside, compared to WCS and Burke)

I don´t think Brown has been deemed less useful because I don´t think they are competing for minutes. Chriss is a small ball big. Brown is a traditional center. Prior to the COVID stuff Brown had taken over from Boban and was getting minutes if Kidd wanted a big body on the floor.
WCS is on a fully guaranteed $4.1mil deal that was guaranteed on August 2nd 2021.

I agree. I tend to see Chriss more as a guy in the Kleber mold. Active forwards who play good defense, roll to the rim, and hit the occasional open 3.

I was representing my own assessment of all possible outcomes. I agree there isn't a clear indication that one is ahead of the other in the official pecking order yet.

I understand why you call Chriss a "small ball big" and I don't disagree. I just think that's the type of big who should really be viewed as a "default big" these days. I don't imagine Kidd agrees with me, so your read on the situation is probably better than mine.

Thanks. If it's fully guaranteed for the season, I'm 99% sure he's NOT about to be cut. Hope I'm wrong.

I really don't see him being cut unless he's still on the roster after the trade deadline. As much as they may like Chriss, I imagine Nico will want to keep his options open for acquiring a more prominent player. And WCS's expiring contract can still be quite useful in trade matching.
If the player cut to make room for Chriss is Ntilikina (seemingly the most financially sound option to keep him) or, if Chriss simply isn't retained past this 10-day period, will we all still be happy they kept Brown?

I won't be.

Totally agree.

I'm honestly feeling like Chriss will not be a Maverick at some point soon.
Maybe they have a small trade in mind that will go down soon to clear all of this up.

Hey, btw, did you see that I saw what you did...

Oh, in my mind, I had liked it. Yes I saw it. Hehe. I tried to put it up when KL was at the game knowing he checks often. He caught it quickly…
If Ntilikina is cut to create a spot for Chriss, we might have to send someone to @"Kammrath"'s home to spend time with him and make sure he can get through that day.

What did you do to Killer?
