5) Attitude and chemistry fit.

So with all those factors in play I don't really think Beal is an upgrade to JB.

I’m with you on this one. Beal isn’t a winner, imho.

That is fair, but in that case you simply pay Brunson and ignore Beal.  I find it extremely unlikely that Beal will try to force his way here and Brunson would prefer to be in Washington to the point where this makes any sense.

I won't be surprised if at some point it makes sense to trade Brunson for a legit two way player, but I don't see it being this offseason via some convoluted S&T, and I don't see it for one way players like Beal or Lavine.
Montrezl Harrell will be cheap this summer. Not great decision making though.
Cato gave grades to each player in todays article.  I found this snippet on Sterling Brown interesting.

But it’s worth remembering he was signed on a two-year deal worth $6 million. He was a fringe player not guaranteed to successfully carve out a role, and he didn’t. It’s likeliest he’ll be waived or traded for nothing before next year, but I’m not going to “fail” someone in this exercise when success was never guaranteed.

Also this note on Trey Burke:

It’s a minor indictment on Burke that Dallas found so much success always playing two on-ball creators in the season’s closing months. He was largely ineffective when given chances, enough that Dallas never seriously relied on him as a stopgap creator even when a lead guard was injured or struggling offensively early in the year. He won’t be on the roster next season.
And Chriss

Chriss was signed as emergency big man depth and provided that. He’s just not good enough for a team of this quality: not effective enough around the rim (59.2 percent), not reliable enough with his jumper, far too much of a defensive liability.
In a world where we sign Pinson, add a tax MLE center and make a draft pick, then Brown, Chriss and Burke are the guys we should be cutting.  I hope that's how it plays out.

I really hope they make a couple trades and add them so we aren’t cutting them.

Why?  They are all negative assets.  Adding them to a trade means less value in what we are getting back.  The only hit of waiving them instead of trading is one year of tax.

Not when we attach the money to cut them. Also, that kind of money is not a negative.

They can be expiring-contract trade filler, if the right opportunity develops. Pieces like that suddenly become so valuable when you need one for a trade, especially when you lack one.

I’ll believe it when I see it. If three players are going out via release, I have a tough time imagining Ntilikina and his non-guaranteed contract not being among them. I hope I’m wrong, but to be honest, I don’t think everything from your list will happen anyway. I’m more worried about reading the board after that pick gets traded than I am about Ntilikina getting released.

I don’t really disagree with your hope, other than to say Boban would absolutely be the first one out in my Utopia, ESPECIALLY if they’re trying to hold onto his fellow mascot Pinson. Of everyone on that list, including Pinson, Boban is the least likely to contribute anything of on-court value, imo. His minutes were at an all-time low last season, so it seems Kidd has even less use for him than Carlisle (thank God).

Easy to say having not spoken to Luka about it. Perhaps Mavs know something you don’t know. And perhaps it was from Luka’s lips to God’s ears, eh?

I'm not saying they can't be useful trade fodder, but I interpreted him to mean he wanted to trade them away to avoid waiving them.  Given the original premise that we are adding 3 players without trading, I don't see it particularly necessary to do anything other than waiving.
Cato squashing the weird stance held by FG and KL on Trey Burke is delicious. It is clear from the full article that Brown and Chriss are likely out, as well.

Time to get serious about improving the roster end-to-end.

Still holding the weird stance, so I can verify that it’s intact, for now. For sure not squashed.

We would be adding 3 draft picks right? Those contracts don’t have to be signed right away. We have time to trade away the guys. If they’re added with a player through trade, you either add them as salary ballast or add them with the money to waive them.
If Boban and Pinson are kept, we really should move on from Burke, Brown and probably Chriss IMO.  It is not my money though.

With those three, that would make 5 players who are really not factors to get any playing time.  That is probably too many with all being veteran players.

Also, we saw some really nice growth internally with both veterans and younger players last year under Kidd.  I would really like to see us identify the right type of player(s) under Kidd and see if we can develop a few players who may not have popped yet.

Where were you when I had this exact conversation centered around Burke?

If you only give em half a season (Chriss), you’re not gonna get much pop.
