We know how Kidd wants to play. He wants to play defense. He has already said that we are going to play defense here.

Not surprising that was the difference between the teams of late and Kidd's Mavs teams around the title year. His Bucks teams always played good d even tho it was some kind of weird concept. Lakers team played defense.

Every new coach says his new team is going to play defense, but there are many different was of approaching this.

As @"dirkfansince1998" said, we'll learn a ton in the next couple of weeks. Can't switch with the current roster, really, and the current roster hasn't shown much ability to play the different kinds of drop defense to any great effect.

His Bucks team played good defense for 1/4 season. Once other teams figured out how to deal with his strong side overload scheme it turned comical bad. Open corner threes all game long. Worst part was that he refused to make adjustments. Really hope that he won´t be as stubborn after his stint as an assistant.
We've never had this combination of humans run a basketball team before. Good deduction from df98 and KL, but where we sit tonight, before any roster moves have been made, without knowledge of how Kidd's early years in coaching have changed him, how the new assistants will influence things, etc, we really don't know how they're going to play! I find that exciting. This us fun.

Very much so.
I’m sort of getting into the idea of, if we’re willing to pay Lowry $30M for 3 years, I’d rather pay Ball whatever it takes to bring him here up a max contract. Wasn’t Kidd supposed to be Ball’s comp coming out of the draft? Who better than Kidd himself to unlock that potential? What’s better than 1 (25ppg) triple double machine? TWO triple double machines (15ppg)!!!

I interviewed Jason Kidd's best friend and he said the plan was was to score more points than the opponent.

It's good that he's into analytics

How much cap room do the Knicks and Bulls have? How much would we have to have to beat them out for Ball? My take has always been that their price is $20M per and ours is $25M per since he wants to play for them more than he'd want to play for us. Of course cow's take is that Ball won't come here b/c career earnings. Many here think "overpaying" Ball is a waste or imprudent. I'm okay with Lowry because he is allegedly the Mavs' target and I'd rather they get their target than be bridesmaids yet again. But I would be far happier with "overpaid" Ball than overpaid Lowry.
I mean Ball has disappointed on every team he's been on while Lowry is a proven winner and underdog. No doubt Ball will become a better player compared to Lowry at some point but that point isn't now.

Yes. It also makes me wonder if Stein is still the go-to guy for Mavs news. Or has his primary source left the building.

Really? Luka, Tim, Dorian, Maxi, Willy can all switch. There’s a playable unit. Richardson and Green too. The fellas who can’t switch as well are the ones most prominently mentioned as trade bait here, aren’t they? Jalen, Dwight, KP?

I thought about this point and wondered, didn’t Mark and Nico “grow up” at the same time in this very organization? If so, they probably have at least a decent relationship, right? If for no other reason than they “grew up” together at the same place?

Yes, really.

KP is the team's highest paid player, meaning he's going to be on the floor when it matters, and must be considered when designing the systems on both ends of the floor. He might be trade fodder HERE, but as @"dirkfansince1998" astutely pointed out, we have no idea if he'll be here in two weeks. If he is, we'll know that switching pick-and-rolls won't be the primary way the Mavs plan to play defense. That's his whole point, and it's a very, very good one.

BTW, I think Powell is one of the better examples of a big who could thrive in a switch-heavy defense in the league. I would view moving him as a possible move away from that strategy, depending on his replacement.

What exactly has Lowry won?  Was he more important than Leonard, FVV or Siakam in that title run?  His biggest accomplishment outside of that was a loss in the ECF and has mostly been a first or second round exit throughout his playoff career.  And that was when he was much younger.  Raptors were 15-31 in his starts last year.

All fair points. But it won’t surprise me one bit if KP is already gone. That rumored 3/90 contract suddenly makes a lot more sense if there’s an outgoing Zing accompanying it.

Hey, wouldn't surprise me, either, but we won't know until it happens. If he's here - can't switch, really. If he's gone and replaced with a more modern big, that becomes more of a possibility.

I'm pretty sure that's all DF98 was saying.

Rolleyes  THJ can switch from not being able to guard the other team's shooting guard to not being able to guard the other team's small forward.

"If you don't count the title, what has Lowry won really?"
