Powell being on the team next year would be a disappointment. At the very least, there better be trade rumors this summer of dumping him. I want to know they at least tried because lets face it, it's a tough sell.

I think they had one in Moses Brown who they got in the JRich trade, but they gave up on him and let him walk. I remember with OKC I believe last year or the year before, he started a few games and had decent numbers.  Now he just signed a regular contract with Cleveland, and is backing up Jarett Allen.

I  Am going to be surprised if Boban is back next year.  I know he has another year left but Kidd has no role for him.  Boban may be done in the nba.  Will another team give him a contract?  He may decide to finish his career playing a bigger role for a European team.  He will turn 34 in a few months.

Dallas will be careful because Luka doesn’t like any disrespect to any players, but I think something will get worked out.  Prior to Pinson joining the team there was talk this team lacked veteran leadership.  At this point I think Pinson is the better non playing alternative with a last roster spot.  Ideally you don’t have one of these, but you can survive.  You absolutely can’t have two of these players imo.
Boban is very likely to be back. The fact that your 15th man rarely plays, but is a valuable contributor to team chemistry and in other ways, and doesn't make any waves about not playing, is about the ideal for a 15th man. The fact that he already has a contract is also very relevant to the equation.
The real question. How do the Mavs get Burke to opt out of his player option...

You don't.  You cut him if you need the roster spot and pay the tax.
I think Burke has a role here and is going nowhere. Nor should he. And he's priced about right, for what he brings to the table.

The focus here on the bottom of the roster is misguided. It needs to be on upgrading weak spots in the playing rotation.
The bottom of the roster also has no value so you can't just "trade them away" without spending something to do so.  There is a very good chance that most of our roster is set for next year.

Please put down your crack pipe. Burke does not have a role at all, he wasn't even in the rotation in the regular season. I think Mavs would have a tough time finding upgrades for the top 6 guys. Easier to add 7th, 8th guys you can play in the playoffs. Guys like Burke, Brown, Chriss are not guaranteed spots. Mavs have a pick, taxpayer MLE and TPE to improve.

He will be back because he is Luka's buddy but he is the only guy that gets that treatment. The other guys at the back of the roster need to bring something to the table.

I am not sure if this is possible as a whole or even each move is possible, but would you be ok with these moves?  Let’s say it takes Josh Green, maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell and two future picks plus a pick swap.  Let’s say in this hypothetical, Dallas keeps this years first.

They acquire EJ Liddell, Nic Batam and Myles Turner.  Is that team ready to compete?  Could it compete for the next 4 years?  Would it be better to wait for another move?

Every summer we expect a big move and it never happens. Maybe it will happen this year but I am skeptical. The KP trade was a very big move and looked like a straight dump at the time. I am delighted it worked out so well. As far as my expectations for the summer I am looking at what most teams do after they get to the semis, which is try to upgrade rotation spots (ie plug holes) rather than making a big swing.

Maybe I used the wrong term when I said "role." I am not saying Burke is a regular, but only that he is here and has a specific, well-defined use that he fills when needed -- and that will be needed from time to time. That's his fit on the roster, and he is paid suitably for that. He's one of the players who fills slots 11-15.

While he could be replaced, it wouldn't be with anyone that's better, or that would play more, and the salary would be similar too. And since he is a known quantity, best to just let it alone for some stability.

You're right that the job will probably be to find 1 or 2 guys who can upgrade or add to the usable regulars, and it's most likely somewhere in slots 6-9. But the presence (or absence) of Burke (or Bobi either) doesn't impact any of that.
Personally I could see the Mavs using cash + 2nds to dump all 3 of Burke, Brown, and Boban. Paying 3rd stringers that much doesn't make a lot of sense when you are deep in the luxury tax. Each one of those guys could end up costing something like 4x their salary in tax. If they can't play meaningful minutes, sign someone for the minimum instead.
This is my own worksheet for how the roster (and roster room) stands, and how it's likely to be manned going forward. If you add someone to a certain group, someone in that group will have to go.

POS                  KEEPER                        COULD BE TRADED______NEED A ROSTER SLOT FOR INCOMING?
BIGS (4-5)        Maxi [Bobi]                     Powell, Bertans                   Chriss

WINGS (5-6)     DFS, Bullock                   THJ, Green, Franky              Brown

POINTS (4)      Luka, JB, SD, [Burke]
Would LaVine want to come to Dallas? He seemed a bit jealous of DeMar when he was getting all the attention and the ball, and Luka has the ball all the time. Would Chicago be interested in a Brunson for LaVine SnT? Brunson went to high school just northeast of Chicago, could be interested in returning home.
My version:

At least your version has positive trade values in the "could be traded" column (Maxi, DFS, RB).  And when we all want to get rid of Burke, Brown, etc., remember the 2nd round pick we gave away in the KP swap.

Have to give up something to get something.

The only real change for me this year was JB has convinced me that he is "untouchable" unless someone comes along with a superstar level offer. Everyone else I am listening to offers on because this team still needs to be improved in big ways. I am not ACTIVELY shopping all those guys, but very open if the right offer comes along (like JC or Gobert).

That's what I was trying to say.  The one plus side to Maxi's down play this year, is that I think we can probably extend him for a similar contract number which is still a value.

Not doable. Mavs can't get any 2022 free agent in any way this summer who will sign for more than 6M-ish. This is assuming they re-sign JB but very likely still applies if they don't.

Agree with your points about Burke and Boban.  It is amazing how much ink gets spilled over the 11-15 slots on this roster.

I might change the categories a little, but I'm in general agreement with where people are lining up.  I'd do Luka and JB as Keepers, which is somewhat synonymous with untouchable.  Next category would be "would like to keep", meaning I'm OK if they go out for a clear upgrade, but my preference is these guys would be part of the ongoing core.  That would include Maxi, DFS, Bullock and SD.  "Could be traded" would be the same people as you've listed.  My meaning is I don't dislike any of them, but if I'm trying to come up with matching salary, this group is where I start.  I assume "need a roster slot" is synonymous with "willing to cut" to open up a roster slot.  We already need to cut one guy if 26 takes up a roster slot and we don't do a 2/1 or 3/2 type trade.

I wonder if trading THJ now isn't selling low.  Seems likely he's still here at the start of the season as the TDL or even the summer after would be better times to get value for him.  But, if you keep him to try to restore value and keep all of the "keepers", then you are left building a package around expiring Powell, overpaid Bertans, Green and a couple of picks.

Is it technologically possible for a moderator to automate a process that puts up a S&T disclaimer any time someone posts a S&T idea without showing the math of how the posted idea gets the team under the Apron.
