I think I follow you on the bit about Ayton, but I'm not 100% sure, and I don't follow at all on the underlined point. Can you elaborate?

Lol, good point.

The prohibition is on players getting "6 year" extensions (extension years count any current years on prior contract), which can only happen coming off a Rookie Scale contract. It's not on number of max salary deals on the roster.

Ayton did not sign such an extension. He played out his contract, and he is no longer under contract. Once a player's contract has expired, they are a free agent, eligible to sign a new deal (with old team or with another team). It's too late to "extend" that old contract and avoid free agency.

Ok, so the "extend and trade" option for Ayton is no longer in play?

It ended when this past season began.

Ok, this is where I was confused, thanks again!

So, am I correct in assuming that this extension couldn't have been given by PHX to BOTH Ayton and Booker? If so, it's a little easier to understand how the Suns got into this mess.

The Suns' "mess" arose because they didn't want to pay Ayton as much as Ayton wanted. (He wanted a max deal.) This rule had no bearing.

You can have up to 2 players on your roster on 6-year extensions, but only 1 can be a player you acquired by trade.

Bingo, gotcha. So this is what Hollinger's point about Mitchell and Simmons is about.
