Jalen Smith - the Mavs could have had him if they wanted, it seems. Not the right skills for what they were looking for, so they didn't have a slot to play him, but he seems like a player who might develop into a good trade asset or a bargain over the next few years.

Ayton to IND, Turner to BRK somehow? Part of Durant to PHX?
Doesn’t look like anything is close:

Was thinking the same thing, Turner for Ayton makes too much sense for Pacers IMO to not be trying it.

Something like KD to Phoenix, Ayton to Indiana, Turner+Buddy+Bridges+a million picks to Brooklyn. The Nets will have no choice but to rebuild on the fly around Simmons, and the only way you can reasonably even try to to do that is a putting a ton of shooters around him.

IMHo, another mistake for the Mavs.
McGee is who he is, and on a possible decline.

Smith on the other hand, can improve. Wouldn't surprise me once Jalen Smith's contract is up, the Mavs will have interest and would be willing to pay him 10M a year, and that's not going to be enough by that time.
I'm guessing the reason for lack of interest in Smith was just that he's similar to Wood in terms of being mostly offense. McGee provides skills that the others don't in terms of defense and rim protection. He'll probably be bad in the last year of the contract but he'll also be trade bait at that point.

Given that McGee is in mid 30s and likely declining and already gets played off the court in the playoffs, I would much rather get the young player who already has rotational value and much more potential.

Yeah that's understandable, but like another poster pointed out earlier, I think the Mavs place value on McGee as a potential mentor for Wood. With Brunson gone, Wood goes from a nice add to someone they NEED to play at an all-star level, and the only way that happens is if he embraces the defensive side of the court. Kidd coached McGee on the Lakers, so that obviously also plays a big part in this.
Am I wrong to think our GM not being in the war room right now is disturbing?

I don’t think much of it. I’m mostly assuming the big work is done and whatever might be happening is waiting on approval from the other side(s). Or he now knows all that’s left to talk to is Dragic and he’s preoccupied. No harm in supporting a coach and building relationships with players. We’ve never had this kind of opportunity where one of our own was playing during this time.
