Give me Killian please.
If it’s just Maxi for Markkanen you have to make the deal. Markkanen is the much younger man, and at this point Maxi’s body is starting to break down. It’s a no brainer.  We’ll figure out the fit later.

Do you have a thing for defensive French point guards that can't actually play basketball?
I learned in my life, that when the opposite side does not want to budge an inch or even states new and newer conditions/picks/money, is in most cases because: 1. they think you have no other choice but to unconditionally surrender or 2. they do not really want to make any deal with you but are just producing additional noise to help them with their other plans which definitely does not include you. Yes, I mean Markannen and Dragic situation, among others.

Also, the market has spoken. The most desired/best/most needed players have already signed their contracts. And market is this way silently saying, that the leftovers/non signed  players, are basically not needed, not wanted, too risky, ego problems, have self inflated values/price or trading them woul have to be almost esoterically and  occultishly complicated and convoluted . That is why those players are leftovers, be it Simmons, Markannen or even Dragic. And also much more a possible post-trade hangover. It is not a coincindence that Schroeder signed for 5,9 mil instead of his imagined value about 120 mil or so (and will be constantly unhappy about it), and that Beverly was traded twice in a week.

Mavs have done, as it is my very amateurish opinion, a good job with wings and big men (of which they have a surplus). They failed to find a real back up ball handler for Doncic and we will just have to live with it.

So, I have stopped thinking about Markannen and comp., and rather hope that KP will have a good year and that the reserve pgs will not get injured but rather grow up player-wise. Nobody expects this to be a championship year, so let mavs build and gel  the future dangerous group of players which will need, in  a year or so, basically mosty an additional good ball handler, and in one year mavs are and will be able to get him.

As all my "knowledge" is mostly from this site and some other sport sites, I could be wrong. So take this as only an amateurish rumination of a side watcher...

Or, it could be the free market bending nature of RESTRICTED Free Agency.
I agree with DanSchwartzgan - the rules of trading/RFGA etc. are worse nightmare/puzzle than the chicken entrails. It reminds me of the rules for electing Doge in the medieval Venice (if you do not mind a headache, check it :-))

Thx for clarification.

I'm not sure it has as much impact in this case?  I was under the impression that Chicago made it fairly clear they would not match a good sized offer, but maybe I am remembering that wrong?

Sure, but that’s part of the restricted FA, right? No one WANTS to pay him a “good sized offer”, but they might have to in order to get him from CHI, or they have to deal with trade demands from CHI either way. With non-restricted, teams only have to deal with the other team if they want to or don’t have the money outright.

I assume Kristi Toliver is being hired for a reason and that she'll be a very good assistant. But the idea of an active player in one league being a coach in another is just really weird to me. Can anyone point out other examples of a similar arrangement (other than her own experience with the Wizards)?

For me.
1)  I dont' know her or what she brings.  I see big reasons for JJB (culture/chemistry builder), Kokoskov (Luka relationship, pedigree, our less experienced head coach), but I don't know what she brings that is unique....not saying she doesn't bring stuff, but I don't know.
2)  I have concerns about someone being a professional athlete, playing in another league, doing the things that athletes do to prepare for the season.  As I understand it, as you get older, the demands of effort and time get greater not less.  We frequently hear about the equally different, yet equally demanding time requirements for being a coach...sometimes, greater demands.   I'm not sure you can fuller do either one at the same time.  I think either the playing demands or the coach demands will suffer greatly or both will be done half.

I guess they could work out a part-time duty assignments, but I am skeptical.  Maybe they work out a desirable way to make it work, but until I see it, I'm going to wonder how much more she brings as a part time coach, that is so much greater and unique, that another coach, male or female, couldn't have done a more complete job.
RE: Kristi Toliver Hiring

I am not suggesting she isn't qualified and will be a good part of the team, but honestly I assume she is being hired mostly because she is a woman and a woman on Kidd's staff is a helpful part of rehabbing his image.
In an article recently it was stated the Mavs were wanting to hire a female coach since Jenny left to join Carlisle...so I do not believe it is directly attributed to Kidd's hiring...I would guess it is being a diverse employer, or it is due to the DJ Pants scandal, or Cynt Marshall pushing it...those are my guesses...

Another reason I don’t think Markkanen is going to sign his QO. With even less cap space next year I don’t see the whole free agency thing working out any better for him. He’d be better off taking a three-year deal now.

I think the NBA market is finally stabilizing after the craziness that started with the giant cap leap a number of years ago. I think the super-max contracts are helping. It seems like the salary hierarchies are finally approaching something that feels reasonable. I think next summer should really help close the gap that remains.
Saw where Robert Williams signed for 4 @ $54MM. Don't know what the breakdown is, but that's roughly $12.5MM first year with ~4.5% annual raises.

Does this do anything to help define Lauri's expectations? I'm not sure where the big man market is these days.
