A contract too small can be an issue with player contentment and with trade matching, underpaying a player by a lot is not really a good thing long term. A contract too big...well we know all about that.

Sure, we want the Mavs to get "team friendly" deals from time to time, but most importantly we want the Mavs paying player what they are actually worth IMO.
For sure, I've been asking for that for such a long time, arguing with people over market value vs on court value. If that's what they're using it for basically as a starting point then I'm glad for that, it should really help the Nicotiator do his thing. I just hope there is as much emphasis on personal/team evaluation as there is on analytics based negotiating, that's why I opened up my post with the first sentence "I certainly hope this isn't the only thing they use in their decision making."  My thoughts on this have aligned very closely to FGump's (he worded things much better than I did).

I want the Nicotiator to make as informed a decision as he can, and this could be a piece to the puzzle. If many other teams are using this metric, that helps him get to a starting point with which to propose trades and offer contracts (because he can basically see what most of the league values him at).

Holmes-Kleber
WCS - Markkanen
Boban

My pipe-dreamy path to get there is
1) On Oct 1, Powell-Burke-Brown-TPE for Markkanen-Dragic (leaves Mavs an empty roster slot for the time being)
2) On Dec 15, KP- ________ for Holmes-Halliburton-_________ (Hield, Bagley, Barnes, junk?)

I too would like to  trade our shitty players for good ones.  If only it were that easy...

Thanks for sharing this. Very interesting.

2 if this system is so great, why are you alerting other teams to your use of it so that you get no advantage, rather than just keeping your mouth shut while you use it and get ahead
3 what value is there in making a big deal about how you'll be underpaying Bullock by about 25% while you want him to be eager to be even better

The edge comes from no one knowing what you're doing. But to do that, you can't tell the world how smart you are, and brag about what your new secret sauce is.

The more you talk, the less advantage you have. So we talk.

I think it’s like having a consultant.

You get to the point where everyone else is paying consultants, and if you are the only one left not paying a consultant you feel like you’re falling behind. So this may be an emerging trend and like you said, may not lead to a key competitive advantage.

It sounds interesting to say the least. And Cuban is probably one of the early adopters. It might just be used as a reference or a check list.
Cuban needs AI to tell him what to do.  That way he can still feel like the smartest human in the room.

Umm, no, he's #28 actually. Now maybe you can argue that he's not the 28th best player on the league, but please don't act like his contract is even worse than it actually is.

Actually, I pulled up last year's salaries. Kristaps is tied for #22 in 2021-2022. Still not top 5.

Quote:The Mavericks would be happy to acquire Lauri Markkanen from the Bulls if he would agree sign under market value so they could fit him into their $11MM traded player exception, according to Tim Cato of The Athletic. In that sign-and-trade scenario, the Mavericks likely wouldn’t have to give up a rotation player.

The alternative would be to offer Markkanen a three-year deal in the $44MM range. The Bulls have some interest in Maxi Kleber, Cato adds. Kleber has a base salary of $8.75MM next season and his 2022/23 salary is non-guaranteed.

However, Dallas would be giving up a rotation piece and replacing him with a player with a higher salary.

Saying LM has a certain market value is strange to me... seems like the market has spoken in that regard.

In the above scenario, LM would be a nice addition to the roster.

It's a huge difference. LM would be a horrible fit with KP, so as long as he's on the roster, LM would work best as a bench big. OTOH Maxi is one of our most versatile bigs, he can pretty much fit in any lineup. Plus he's our only real perimeter-defending big. Would be awful to trade him for LM.
I agree, I don't want to lose Maxi for Lauri.

RFA-market has nothing to do with market value.

I'm pretty sure LM refused to sign any offer, which the Bulls could feel tempted to match.

In my market his exact value is the TPE and two seconds.

RFA isn't some separate thing from market value. The entire reason RFA exists is to influence the market value of players, specifically discourage teams from trying to steal good young players for cheap.

In this particular case, LM's market value is low both because of RFA and because, frankly, he isn't really a good player right now. Whether you want to say it's because of fit or whatever, he hasn't been a player who helps you win. That's why I think it's strange to say the Mavs want LM for "below" market value- it's assuming that LM's assessment of his own value is the accurate one, but so far there's zero indication that there's any team in the league who wants to pay that. The Spurs didn't want to pay that, the Bulls don't want to pay that, and the Mavs don't want to pay it...

Ok I try again:

The salary to sign someone in RFA has to be over his real market-value or the other team just matches.

LM wants out of Chicago, he wont sign any realistic offer sheet.

I agree with the Spurs didn't want him. I agree with the Bulls don't want him.
I think he would at least get a full MLE as a UFA. So the TPE is around his market value.

Why?  We have like 5000 centers that can fill in for him.

It just cracks me up that we got rid of Seth Curry who was better than Maxi in that Clippers series, but we're now hesitant to give up a guy who sucked ass two playoffs in a row?

And I'm glad I brought up Seth Curry because getting Markannen would be like US getting Curry.  Shooting>every other NBA trait.
