I think the answer is right in front of us here.

We all know about the strong lineup data on the KP/DP duo from the 2019-2020 season.

That lineup was awful at the end of last year when we tried it. That was after Powell started looking like his normal self. Powell is just not good enough to start.

It's needed, yes.  MBT know this.  Just like you and I have a list of players we really wanted the Mavs to chase, they have their own lists.  We've heard about the ground balls they ran out, but we don't know the ground balls that they didn't.  Maybe they loved Ball but quickly learned he didn't want to play beside Luka.  I might not be in love with the outcome, but it does seem like they had a plan and quickly moved to their next preferred free agents.

And it looks like they followed a structure that had branching paths.  We didn't end up with the likes of WCS and Wright this time around.

And yes I know we picked up the WCS option this year...for some reason.
I am one of probably many who are with you Fifteenth. I agree Friday is big but just like Dwight Howard, Dragic is not the only fish in the sea anyway. Stay patient all and let Nico surprise us.
Of the secondary ball-handlers left on the market, Reggie Jackson might be the best fit. But it looks like the Clippers are trying to retain him.
I would guess the impasse is because of Toronto wanting our young guys. I certainly hope it's not just because Cuban loves Dwight Powell too much.

I'm thinking the "impasse" is that they simply don't want Dragic at that figure for some reason.
Do we actually have any money left to spend or can we only make trades at this point?

My super optimistic take is that the Mavs have something else cooking that they like better. as far as using their trade assets.

That would be the Occam's razor of why Dragic's contract is a problem. Holmes is still kind of up in the air, right?

It is weird that the Holmes situation still isn't cleared up.

The Mavs would have to dump Powell for basically nothing to give Holmes a contract bigger than Sactown
It's like Chtistmas. Only, we're not sure if Christmas is gonna happen Firday, come early, be delayed, or get canceled.

I want Dragic plus some cool surprise for Christmas! And I'm not giving up until I find my stocking filled with rocks.

Anyone besides Presti have room to take Powell for air?  Negotiating that would not go well for Nico.

Just like when Collins was still in the air, I'm going to say don't do think to yourself if you are hoping for Holmes.

I can make you a good deal on a slightly used Goran.

I don't know. I cannot find anything that really suggests that is the case....but it feels like a situation where it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that he were to "change his mind" if something better and bigger came along.

I think the Mavs could even just dump WCS Burke and Moses to get to about $11.5 million starting salary. We’d still need to find a way to get an additional ball handler.

Interesting as Dragic’s main value would be the big expiring contract. If the Mavs just want an old, broken down small, they might as well bring JJ Reddick back.

Yeah if the contract itself is a problem, then it points to the rest of the Mavs plans as far as roster construction, trades, etc.

On the other hand, if the compensation around a DP for Dragic trade is the real issue that is something else altogether.

Stein reporting the contract at $19M being the issue gives me a long pause about what else is brewing.

I think they'd have to clear quite a bit of room to fit THJ, Bullock (no longer MLE...), Holmes, and Sterling Brown. They would then have the rMLE and the BAE to go after a bought out Dragic.

Cuban probably just doesn't want to spend the money or give up any perceived asset and probably figures the likelihood of a buyout is worth the risk of waiting.

Or Cuban’s gone cheap!  Doubtful, but it’s the only other explanation other than they have another deal in place.
