The Athletic has had a few pieces highlighting similar data above. Basically, J Kidd either down't know or he's making up bs for the media. The Mavs are actually shooting a pretty good percent on their wide open threes.

The problem is, they're not getting the same shots they got last year. That includes all areas of the floor but specifically, the threes they're taking (and missing) are not high quality.

So contrary to the popular narrative, it's really no surprise they're not making them.

I don't know how that shot quality is measured in those above charts.

NBA.com's stats say this:

Open threes: Mavs are taking 15.8 per game and shooting 28.0%....last year 16.5 per game and shooting 36.9%. Down 8.9%.

Wide-Open threes: Mavs are taking 17.6 per game and shooting 39.4%....last year 17.5 per game and shot 37.0%. Up 2.4%

Thanks for digging that up. I guess you can always find a stat to fit your narrative. Cato thinks the Mav's roster is fatally flawed and he's pointed to the Mavs shooting a great percentage on wide open threes to argue shooting isn't the real problem. Cato thinks it's the shots they're taking, and he blames Luka's conditioning and lack of help from a bad roster.

From what I can tell, it's a mix of both. When they get WIDE OPEN threes, they're knocking them down. When they get OPEN threes, they're bricking them, I think because they're not the same open threes they got last year. The offense and substitution patterns are totally different and not all open threes are created equal.

The easiest player to notice in this regard, I think, is THJ. He is SUCH a rhythm player. He may be getting "open" threes ... but they ARE NOT THE SAME RHYTHM threes he got last year. Why? I blame Luka's health, the new offense, the substitution patterns, other guys handling the ball, clogged paint ... all these things are connected ....and the Mavs are anything but connected.
I don't think you can blame bad conditioning and bad roster for the shooting, because the same things were true last year. The only real variable here is COACHING, and the Mavs clearly need to be getting higher-quality shots, because Kidd's offense isn't cutting it.

I guess inconsistent shooting and turnover prone?  But I liked James Johnson a lot.  Big,  defender, crafty,  nice passer, could go to the hole.  Wonder if he would be better here now with Rick gone.  Or was he trash?

Luka and Zion both taking time out of the regular season to cultivate their inner gourmand.
Thank God Luka is getting some games off.  That's one item of my Christmas wishlist.

Just do what they are doing tonight. Give extended minutes to Brown and Green. We win, we win. We lose, more ping pong balls.

Trash and old, but we can talk ourselves into anything, and he was supposed to be our Johnny Lawrence.
