Wrong thread.  You are a welcome kamm.
After reading replies to my questions (thank you fans), I have in my mind the following picture of the present state of the Mavs team:
Wings: very good, wide selection, diversity, proven shooters - an A effort
PG: ok, as long as both Luka and/or Jalen are healthy.
Centers/forwards: maybe too many, meaning, do we really need seven (7) big men?
Business and game leadership/assist: basically unproven or with mixed past results (GM, coach, front office, coach assistants etc.)

Elephants in the room:
KP - I really hope that he will be healthy and that the new coach will find for him a role he will succeed in. Otherwise...
Dragic - is more of a point of conversation than a real interest for the Mavs office, especially after Luka signed the contract - just my personal opinion
Markannen - Mavs does not have what it takes to hire him and really, we cannot expect that he will lower his price just to play with luka. And, do we really need a big man No. 8?
PG injuries: let us pray that Luka and/or Jalen remain healthy; if both are injured  it will be very hard to achieve anything.

If I am wrong (and I sure could be) please feel free to correct me. All I want to have, is a comparatively clear picture of what to expect of this team in the next season. Thank you.

I swear I can´t keep the Hornets and Pelicans apart. Not the first time this happened to me. Big Grin Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Bobcats, New Orleans Hornets, New Orleans Bobcats, New Orleans Charlottes,  Bobcat Pelicans, Charlotte Pelicans, Hornet Bobcats. Maybe if they did anything interesting ever, I could.

The East is better too. No more presumably easy wins.

Maybe if they became the Horny Boobcats.

My issue is always the Pels vs. the Thunder. Two franchises from our neck of the woods of relatively recent vintage in their current locales that are pretty non-descript as teams. I keep thinking the Pels have Presti and his picks instead of Zion.

Kawhi out, Jamal Murray out much of the first half of the season, Portland in turmoil, Pels losing a key piece of their up a coming roster, west is better.
We are starting to see that the problem with trying to get better talent on the team is that no one wants ANY player on our team except Luka. If people want to dump KP and chalk it up to "sunk cost", why is it not talked about to do the same with the rest of the team?

Vehemently disagree.

I'd be shocked if almost every team in the league wouldn't want DFS as $4M. It's just that you can't get a better player by trading that contract. Ditto for Brunson and Kleber. That's three players besides Luka who I bet they could trade in a heartbeat. I bet they could even be combined to fetch a pretty nice return in the form of one, higher-paid player, but because they're a playoff team they're not letting themselves think that way. Can't do 3-for-1's without hurting the near future, even if it sets them up better for the longterm. Whether they should be thinking that way is debatable, imo, but whether they are is not.

This is serious pessimism. I get the disappointed expectations, but c’mon man.

THJ reportedly offered $14M more to go elsewhere.

Knicks rumored all year long to want Brunson.

Wiz reportedly watching KP status and, more recently, interested in DFS.

LeBron saying he’d like to play with Luka.

Even Josh Richardson didn’t make the Celtics hold their noses and demand draft compensation.

For one franchise, that’s quite a bit of noise. Are you just depressed that Toronto doesn’t want their native son back? Or that Detroit didn’t make a move for UM alum Trey Burke? I agree, but it’s hard to be very surprised.

Mostly about people who STILL want to dump KP and chalk it up to sunk cost.

I get it now.

My issue with this is the other side of the deal...Embiid and KP.  That seems to me to be more problematic than Luka and Simmons.

What issues do you see with Embiid and KP?

Porzingis always played next to a beefy center in New York and both Embiid and KP can stretch the floor for the other. Opponents can't go small and switch everything or Embiid will dominate inside. That means there will always be an opposing big on the floor. The offensive fit seems fine. Maybe ideal if the Sixers also get a ddecent point guard (Brunson?)

On defense Embiid controls the paint and KP is your weakside shotblocker ... KP tags when teams put Embiid in pick & roll. When teams target KP you have Embiid patrolling inside. This is just an upgraded version of Dallas' better defensive units: KP + Powell or WCS.

I guess you can argue KP can't guard modern power forwards ... but Embiid + a healthy KP would present some real matchup challenges themselves.

KP himself has always been a conundrum ... He can be a matchup problem for opponents but also his own team. What type of frontcourt player fits best next to KP?

If you're the type of guy who says "big beefy center" and you work up trade proposals for guys like Steven Adams then clearly Embiid is the definition of best fit.

Doesn't Embiid give you everything John Collins does, only at an MVP level? Embiid is an equal 3pt shooter and far better scorer, rebounder, facilitator & defender than Collins.

But if you're the type of guy who believes KP is only a true unicorn at center, and you want to play a big wing like Siakam or Jeremy Grant at power forward (or in Dallas' case, DFS) next to him then a deal to the Sixers clearly makes no sense. I'm just not sure KP can anchor a defense. Of course, if he CAN why the hell would you want to trade him?!
