Sorry but getting another defensive wing and potential great defender in Frankie is a needle mover especially if he can develop a respectable shot...also if Burke who brought nothing is outgoing...

Don't the Mavs have an open spot on their 20-man roster for camp, and haven't they been having tryouts to see how they want to fill it? It sounds like Frankie won the tryout round, over IT, Lance, Monta, etc. Is this any more meaningful than that?

Although, there are obvious paths to possible 15-man openings that could emerge down the road, especially if Frankie impresses in camp. There's no reason to assume Brown will make the 15-man roster. (He can provide good stats on a tanking team, but that's all he might have to offer.) .... And we can't forget that if a Dragic trade emerges, it probably opens two slots.

Dragic throwing out first pitch Friday for Blue jays means he is more likely to play for Raps at least part of the season...

I would actually like him more than Frank, at least from what I saw at Olympics. Neither is PG. Frank literally can't buy a bucket. They were just leaving him wide open and he couldn't score.

Hard to argue against that logic. Though I will say between the two I'd take Frankie just because of injury history.

Should either one make the final 15 man roster (and that's a big stretch imo), Frankie provides valuable defense. I don't really think he'll ever get serious burn here, but he's only 22 and hit nearly 48% of his threes (albeit on extremely low volume). 

Frank can't score which limits him severely, but I don't mind the move as a training camp deal. I hope he impresses and we see some growth outta him.

Of course, I don't mind if he gets training camp deal or becomes 15th man on the roster. But as you said, I don't expect any real contribution from him (or minutes). I don't think he is a PG, so he would be basically competing with Brown and Green for end of bench wing minutes. I rather develop Green than him. If we are thinking about D only point guards, I would much rather go with Dunn. He can't shoot but he is a PG. It would be difficult to play him with Luka, but could play as a back-up PG when Luka sits.

To me all the recent developments suggest Burke gets stretch-waived/waived/traded, Ntilikina will take his place and we re-visit the whole Dragic situation in a few months again.

Although it was a very small sample size Ntilikina has been an excellent 3pt shot from  the corners over the last two seasons (55%):

2019-2021: 27/49  (55%)

compared to

2017-2019: 15/48  (31%)
  
So there is an argument that if you play Ntilikina with Luka and park him in the corners, he could actually become a 3&D wing in the mold of DeShawn Stevenson. Question is how good his defensive impact will be, when he´s always positioned in the corners offensively and has a lot of ground to cover, for example in transition defense. Also you cannot expect much play-making either, but beggars and choosers at the moment....

Let´s look on the bright side. We won´t have to listen to any "we almost drafted Ntilikina"-stories from Cuban in ten years.

Good point on Dunn if we're really just looking at defensive guards, though I don't think he's been bought out by Memphis. In either case since neither can shoot it basically means they can't effectively play next to Luka. But like you said I'd rather give ALL the minutes to Green and develop him as much as he can. Funnily enough out of all of those guys I think Green might be the best distributor. He really showed some flashes last year with his passing ability. 

Perhaps Frank can surprise given his last year of shooting? Probably just wishful thinking though.

Memphis has 18 guys on the roster, 17 of them have fully guaranteed contracts, so they will need to get rid of three of them till start of season. They might find some 2-1 trades but most likely I think Dunn is one of the guys that will be bought out by season start at latest.

I wasn't a fan in the 2017 draft, but I was a really big Dennis Smith Jr fan in the draft.   You win one, you lose one.   

I am fine with the gamble on him though.   I will be interested to see if it is a non-guaranteed contract or maybe a one year veterans minimum contract.   I think my hope is it is a 1 plus 1 (team option) type of contract.   

I think I would prefer Frank over Isaiah Thomas.    I just had trouble seeing how Thomas and Brunson could play together if Thomas proved good enough.  I can squint and see Frankie fitting better with our team.   Plus Frank is only still 23.    

The positive is that he can be a real good defender and not a guy who needs the ball.   If he can hit open threes, he will probably have a spot in the league.  The negative is he really does not have much quickness to create off the dribble and is not a great dribbler any way.   His offense is almost non existent.  I believe he should be a coachable kid.    

Although if Dragic is not bought out, this offseason still is a low grade from me.

I think the best thing we could all do is forget Frank was ever the #8 pick and look at him like we looked at Finney-Smith a few years ago.  The D, length and athleticism are there.  So, he has one NBA ready skill that would theoretically allow a role player to stick long enough to see if the other stuff comes around.  One other thing he's good at statistically is drive and dish.  So, not a PG, but enough handles to get around a close-out and either finish or hit an open man.  In 19/20 his Drive/Assist rate was in the 96th percentile.  If he can hit a corner 3 and do those other two things, you've got exactly what you hope for from a 3&D wing who can guard primary ball handlers (and a horribly disappointing #8 pick).  He has to prove it, but he'll get plenty of open looks to try.  

Assuming this is a simple as Burke out/Frank in, I like that there is a youthful developmental element to spots 11-15 from among Moses, Green, Terry and Frank.  I see Bullock as a lock in the top 8 (but note he's only partially guaranteed in that third year).  Between, Green, Sterling and Frank, there is a lot of competition for some bench guard minutes.  I don't think that is a bad thing.  None of those three are locks, but all three have upside compared to expectations.

Re Frank: at least a fun addition and a useful specialist. He’s clearly not a PG but with Luka and Brunson around he’s a nice option at the offball guard spot. His defense will help in some moments. I hope he makes the squad. I’d rather pay Frank the minimum than Sterling the BAE.
