Reggie looks so happy.  Dragic looks not so happy.

Did you read the part where I agreed that not giving up Terry, Green or Brunson (the speculated ask, at the time) was the right line to toe? I've written that many times.

I'm saying if they didn't have a deal in place for Dragic (it very much seemed they did), why didn't they get someone else? They can't go into the season without a playmaker of his caliber or higher. Those guys are not a dime a dozen. There aren't very many of them, and they HAD to get one.

It's not over, but I'm getting worried.
Thanks for the thoughts.

Since the Mavs can't convey a first-round pick until 2027, I could see some GMs going for it. Get the asset now, worry about 2027 when it comes around, who know if I'll even be here then, type of thing.

It doesn't sound to me like the Mavs were ever offering anything the Raps would want. Lots of chicken was played; the Raps won.

It raises the question - did the Mavs just see Dragic as Bobi/JJB 3.0, or did they see the need for a playmaker? If the latter, why the hell not go after someone available, like, you know, when they're still available?

New GM, same horsepoop.

Worst case you hold on to Dragic until the deadline and get a couple of 2nd round picks.

I haven't really seen a reasonable argument for why TOR would do that trade other than Dragic would prefer to be in Dallas.  Toronto would be in a worse position after the trade than they are right now.

Hopefully Duffy comes through and works out a middle ground where we send a future 2nd and/or Terry instead of a future 1st or Josh Green.

edit:  If I'm Toronto, I'd rather release/buy out Dragic for nothing rather than take back Powell.  Masai doesn't seem like the guy to release an asset for nothing unless he really wants to owe Duffy a favor.

Yeah, I never bought the buy Goran out right now for Toronto.   Why not hold onto him for now and maybe if nothing happens you buy him out near the trade deadline.  Maybe he thrives in Toronto and looks really good.  A buyout just never seemed like a Toronto thing.

I will say I can see Toronto looking at bigger moves.  There has been some internet rumor that they may sniff around and buy low on Bagley.   Maybe there is a deal like that where Goran is salary filler with asset and the third team buys out Goran.   Although I don't expect Toronto to buyout Goran themselves right now.

Did we waive him when I wasn't looking?

It seems like everyone wants to waive Moses around here.

I think Dragic was in the "nice to have" category.  I'm glad we didn't blink with Ujiri.  We can always blink towards the TDL if worst comes to worse.  I do agree with the sentiment of going after someone who is available.  We are quickly heading towards the "break in case of emergency" options:

-JJB we are glad you stayed in shape and played overseas.
-Devin we like you on the microphone but we need you on the court.
-JKidd, Bill Russell was a successful player/coach, you'd like to be like Bill, wouldn't you?

In a vacuum, I think a 1st is rich for Dragic. I think he's great, but he's 35 and on the last year of his deal. If he was 30, I'd say go for it if you get the sense you can retain him on a reasonable deal. But, even though I think he very well could be worth that type of investment the first year, you don't get very far giving away 1sts for one year of work.

...and that's in a vacuum.

For the Mavericks, specifically, it would be an horrendous idea. They need to clutch their assets tightly, only giving them up in no-brainer situations, because they have so few of them.

But goodness gracious, I again ask: If a deal to acquire Dragic wasn't in place, how did we arrive at a place where the best plan is hoping to get him somehow? I legitimately thought they had a 3-way trade worked out about 10 minutes after Lowry agreed to sign with the Heat. If not, I don't understand why they didn't go after someone else.

You accidentally added a "t."

Genuine question:

Do you have concrete examples of "someone else"?

I have one. You wouldn't like it.

Is he still available?  If so, barely anyone likes it.

He is not. NY liked him well enough.
