Not trying to be insensitive, but what's up with Terry's missing more time for "personal" reasons.

For most of us, taking that much personal time off would earn us a permanent unpaid vacation from the company. Of course, most of our salaries aren't guaranteed.

The report said "family" related. Not in a hurry to comment. The dude could be with a dying family member or something.
It's just that he spent a lot of last season away for "personal" reasons. Just wondering if this is a continuation.
As a fan, I have the right to know some stuff, and other stuff is personal to the player. This time, they're calling it "personal". That designates it as "none of my business". I have to accept that this is "none of my business". I can have compassion, or not, but it's...none of my business.
Yes. And sometimes having compassion requires a heck of a lot of compassion.

I agree with this.

I have empathy for Terry and as a person I hope whatever is going on he sees through and it works out. But as a basketball fan I think it's time to move on. If I was running the Mavs this would be one of the final straws that just pushes me towards cutting/trading him for nothing. I guess Nico/Mark wants to see how he'll do under Kidd, and that's fair, but it's clear to me that Terry doesn't have the mental fortitude to survive in the NBA.
Did I miss something? Last time it was "personal", and we found out thanks to Locked On Mavs asking the question, that he was fighting mental health challenges. What I saw about this time was that it was "family" related.

All true.

But, and especially in cases wherein it's "none of our business" in that no explanation is given (again), it's not out of line to wonder if this kid is ever going to be able to prioritize his career and this team.

I might feel differently if I knew the circumstances, but, while I support his right to privacy, that privacy means I have less information with which to form my opinion. Currently, my opinion is that Terry isn't going to make it very far in pro sports, and that's coming from one of the last registered landowners on Tyrell Terry Island.

Townsend did say he went home to take care of some family business. But it was a personal matter.

In any case, from my POV he's missed too much time already from personal matters compared to where he stands in the league. He's essentially missed most of training camp, fam jam, and 1 preseason game and counting. He didn't even have a good summer league and was cut short from injury.
@ All Y'all

I agree. TT hasn't done anything to show us he's an NBA player. Not being around the team, missing lots of time and not being very good can't be a good way to keep a job that's performance based (so anything but working for the government   Big Grin ).

At the same time, I'm just being careful with my comments because "family issue" could very well be something more important than basketball.

Of course any personal/family issue is more important than basketball. But at the end of the day he still needs to report to his job. I know for certain I would've been terminated LOOOOOONG ago if I needed 3 months off for mental health reasons.

I feel for the guy and hope he pulls through. Doesn't mean the Mavs should hold a spot for him just to be nice.
Too f’n little anyway. No offense intended. I’m in the same boat, with far fewer basketball skills.
To be an NBA player, I'm guessing it takes a certain level of commitment. Even with that, it takes talent. The world if full of talented folks without that level of commitment. So far, from Terry, I'm not seeing the commitment. Does he have legitimate personal issues that are stopping him? Not for me to say. The Mavs will eventually come to the crossroads with him and let him go, or not. So far, I'm not seeing anything that I'd miss seeing.
