Anyone else trying to wrap their head around Frank Ntilikina and his contributions so far?

I am still not understanding how this kid was a regular DNP in New York.

We may have stumbled across a good find and yes he was the right choice over Dennis Smith Jr. We could have the long term answer to replace THJ to be honest.

The choice wasn't DSJ or FN, it was DSJ or Burke. DSJ was the right answer there too. Could have had both players figuring out their fit with this team as opposed to Trey freakin Burke.

I am repeating myself. WCS, Terry and Burke for the MLE was all time bad. Mavs outbid themself on players that probably don´t deserve a roster spot in the NBA. Give me Brown over WCS. DSJ or any other reclamation project guard over Burke.

Could be wrong, but I think he might have been talking about the draft. Maybe?

Doubt it. We didn’t have a choice between the two on draft night. We did this offseason though.

Frank is not a replacement for THJ.  He might be the long term replacement for the failed Delon Wright and Josh Richardson experiments.  A point of attack defender that can be a little bit of a secondary playmaker and will not kill you on offense.  And we got him for the min instead of 10+ mil/year and burning valuable assets (Curry).
I’m not prepared to say whether or not I think Ntilikina is a long term starter here. But, I have definitely seen enough to know that he was worth signing at the minimum, and that he has the potential to be a championship-level rotation piece very soon, if not right now.

Great signing.
6 of the next 7 on the road for Dallas, so this should give us a pretty early look how we fare.  We have a pair playing the same team back to back ( Clippers and Suns).

Typically the Mavs team has been good on the road and poor at home.   I fear we may not be too hot on the road to start the year.  We are a little sloppy right now, not shooting free throws well, and typically get off to slower starts.  Those are bad things to do on the road.   Mavs will need to play their best ball heading into these next 7 games.   Lets see how they do.

Great signing.

This is one of the very few good decisions the MBT (both old and new) have made since the 2018 draft. Have to luxuriate in moments like this since they're so rare.

As a reminder, the last 1st round pick that the Knicks re-signed after his rookie contract was Charlie Ward in 1995. Perpetually irrationally cocky about their desirability in free agency, the Knicks are historically terrible at developing young players.

Frank is clearly a talented young kid on both ends of the floor, and he's still only 23. He just needs the right role, and all indications so far point to both he and Dallas building a mutually beneficial relationship. I'm really happy to have him and look forward to watching him continue to grow as a player.
Franks 22/23 contract is not guaranteed, but that still prevents him from signing with another team, correct?

Looking long term...If Frank continues to thrive with DAL, can you do an extension after next year to keep him here and happy?

Correct

Sort of, but it's not clear how useful that would be. In summer 2023 the Mavs would have Early Bird rights which allow them to offer him either the better of 175% of his salary in 2022-2023 or 105% of the league average salary for 2022-2023. The 2020-2021 league average salary was close to exactly $10,000,000 .. so about 8.5% of the salary cap. Should be somewhere close to $12m in summer 2023.

If, really getting ahead of ourselves here, at that point Frank is closing in on almost two years of significant contributions on playoff making teams that might not be such an attractive offer from his pov. If he's the 9th guy on the rotation on a team losing badly in the first round of the playoffs each of the next two years (or worse) then it's a decent deal for both sides, I suppose, but doesn't really push either the Mavs or Frank into a better place.

When THJ's contract is over he will be 33 to 34 years old.

I agree on the Delon Wright reference but IMO that is the floor for what I think  Frank N. can be. I think the ceiling is a long term ceiling into becoming a starter when he is around age 26 to 27.

He very well could be the replacement when we transition from THJ. Again, I am and basing this off of projection and development if he keeps improving.

Yes good point, the Knicks have been much worse than us in that regard. The new regime seems to have turned things around but Frank may have been destined for failure on day 1 when Phil Jackson drafted him.

The key is still a very intriguing prospect.

I do have almost unlimited amounts of views /slash information from publicly available sources on this from following it closely, but almost nothing is relevant to the Mavs except that Frank did have a couple of years where he lost a couple of months worth of games with groin strain injuries. Those should be not repeating afaics .. but who knows?

(The other factors were league worst coaching and FOing. Not even Knicks fans want to revisit those subjects. )

For the thread title, D-Rating is 12th now.  I wouldn't be too quick to change it either since Chicago is 6th in O-Rating and our D against good teams has been terrible this season.
