They need another big unless Kidd is going to play Brown or Boban more.  All of a sudden they are thin up front. Chriss is up and down mostly down. He fouls too much.

Brown is cut.

Yeah I am thinking short term.  It will be heavy lifting for Dwight and Maxi for the rest of the regular season.

Then in the playoffs it will be really tough.  Utah has Gobert starting and two big backups.  Phoenix has Ayton and two big backups.   Memphis maybe less so, but they offer challenges.   Golden State probably scares you the least.   I just think we are going to have trouble competing there.  It would have been nice to have that extra move.

Long term, I think centers are available out there.   But the question is do you need to be better than average or slightly below average to compete against the best teams?
DFS has improved his ability to attack closeouts so freaking much.
Hoop Collective Podcast today:

Brian Windhorst:
  • "Let me just say, in my conversations with executives/agents over the last week, Jalen Brunson's name got brought up A LOT. At least 3 or 4 different scenarios. I never heard so much talk about a high level role player."
Tim MacMahon:
  • "He gets better every single year, going to get $18-20 million per year, and I don't think it's going to be a bad contract. A decent chance he gets that contract in Dallas."
  • "Brunson is happy in Dallas, he doesn't want to move." Not enough to get the extension done though.
  • A lot of talk Knicks would make some moves to free up cap space, huge sigh of relief for the Mavs.
  • "Pistons view Brunson as a great fit next to Luka, would be great next to Cade Cunningham too. Pistons asked about Brunson yesterday but it was a brief conversation, Mavs jokingly counter-offered that they had interest in Cade (lol). Jerami Grant was never on the table for the Pistons."

That's really funny! I wonder if it was Nico that said it. :-)

Better have been Nico! He should be the ONLY phone number anyone in the league has!
That segment makes me feel better about the numbers being thrown around for Jalen.

Same. Windhorst’s description of what went wrong with Bertans scared me even more about him though.

Summary?

TM:  Bertans totally fell out out of favor, was a deep bench player, shooting low 30s, but hes a career 40% shooter, hoping this move can get his mojo back and be a gunner off the bench.
BW:  He left the country during the pandemic.  He had an injury (shoulder).  He didn't play in the bubble because of the injury.  After the bubble he signed this big contract.  He was out of the country for a huge number of months, signed the contract overseas, didn't come back after March 2020, signed the contract.  He came back to training camp and wasn't the same player.  It was buyers remorse within days, weeks.  They were like "he'll get better" and he didn't.

Now to find the parrot that Brian got that from.

I actually remember this. I wondered at the time why he would be compelled to spend all that time overseas.

I hope a change of venue brings him down to earth. My guess is that he is rightfully trashed in social media for being entitled and probably is equally disgruntled himself about his current play. I'm sure he's thrilled to be leaving.

I'll see that and raise you:

Despite all of the disgruntled, disillusioned feelings expressed around here daily (many of which are at least somewhat valid), I bet the "fighting for the 4 seed in the West" Dallas Mavericks are looking pretty good as a destination, too.

Absolutely. A three-point shooter is a slump looking for redemption gets to go to a team with Luca as the PG?  That's a ticket to heaven.

Let's hope Davis is Boban/DAJ like with his friends around the league and spreads the word.

I think more players would want to be here than many of us know.

The Mavs have badly misjudged their desirability to the highest level of players in the past, but I bet there are loads of upper middle class types who'd love to be here right now. And, I still believe that when Luka gets older, he'll be the biggest draw in the league at some point. I think they just tried to build that way a bit too early, personally.

You and I agree that Cuban is super annoying, and I bet it's a turnoff for loads of players, but I think Kidd/Harrison have helped with that, whether we like the job they're doing or not.

The weird thing to me is that most players like being here.  Even DSJ wanted to come back but he was kind of at the end of his rope, Carlisle was gone and he and Luka are still good friends.

I do think how we handled Tyson (twice), Barnes, DAJ and DSJ does haunt us a bit.  And I know no one wants to read it but we have heard grumblings about perceived biases against black players.
