That's terrible

That's good, as long as they don't make the two mistakes of 1) believing that THJ is a starter for this team - he binarily is not, and/or 2) bidding against themselves/overpaying. Those bullets dodged, we then we have room for another fairly major FA.

The THJ part is concerning. As for the KP thing, I have no comprehension whatsoever of why people have a problem with us undoing the major, crippling problem of KP's contract.

If Lowry at his age is so terrible (and don't get me wrong; I'd far prefer Conley or CP3), then why does he have so many eager suitors?

Does he think Luka and garbage are enough?

So a GM going into trade season should say bad things about the roster?

Good point. I still don't think it would have hurt him to say that they were actively working to improve the team.
(07-26-2021, 06:51 PM)mvossman Wrote: [ -> ]While I agree with most of this, that group is not garbage.  KP and THJ are quality starters (and KP might be more) and Powell, Brunson and Maxi are all quality rotational pieces.  I would value that group at roughly 60 mil in value (AAV) and they currently cost around 70 mil.  That is not terrible and the reality is we will likely be overpaying free agents as an alternative.  The biggest issue with most of these guys is fit, so the goal is to get better fitting pieces.

As for Maxi, I think he got miscast a bit as a starting 4, and is much better as a backup stretch 5 who can also play the 4.  I think he is more important to us than we will be able to get in trade, so he probably makes more sense staying.  I understand it was suggested that we offered him to Atlanta for Collins, and the prevailing thought is that he would be a good fit with Capella, but honestly I think he would be an even better fit with Collins.

I'll be surprised if KP is a regularly playable playoff player for whatever franchise ends up with him. If his 2021-22 defense bears any resemblance to his 2020-21 defense, he won't be. As for THJ, I'll say it again - he's fine for any other team, but he cannot be a starter on a Luka-led team. It would be nuts of the Mavs to pay him starter money, and it would probably be nuts of him to stay here for less when likely at least one team out there is willing to pay more.

On the cheap?  I love it.  The team needs a lot of work and given we don't have draft capitol or a ton of valuable contracts to trade, reclamation projects are the type of rocks we should turn over.
Here is some interesting info from the Wizards beat writer @ChaseHughesNBCS that connnects Beal to Dallas.

"As Beal mulls his future, which the Athletic reported could result in a decision this week, there are several teams considered more intriguing than others, according to someone familiar with Beal’s thinking including the Warriors, Heat, Celtics, Blazers, Lakers and Mavericks"

Warriors:  7 + 14 + Wisemen + Wiggins + Future FRPs/Swaps
Heat:  Herro and/or Robinson + Precious + Future FRPs/Swaps
Celtics:  Brown (?) + FRPs/Swaps
Blazers: CJ + FRPs/Swaps
Lakers:  pu pu platter + Distant Future FRPs/Swaps
Mavs:  KP + Brunson + anyone not named Luka + Distant Future FRPs/Swaps

Lakers and Mavs don't have the ammunition unless the Wizards like KP.  Celtrics probably aren't giving up Brown and even if they did, if I were Beal and I wouldn't want to go to them.  Golden State and Blazers probably make the most attractive offers.

I mean we can take that list in numerical order and say the Mavs are last. Or we can view it as the Mavs are seen as 1 of 6 teams a superstar wants to go to. I prefer the latter.
Who was monitoring KP last season?...which team was it?...

I worked hard for this intel! haha
Check discord...I made a Beal connected to Dallas post before you did...

I'm sure most teams are looking for buy low candidates for fallen angels.  On the plus side, if you are a rebuilding team the risk of KP's contract/injury woes are lessened.  Can he help you sell tickets?  He's certainly been at his best as an alpha.

And he looked good with THJ as a sidekick...just sayin...

Still, if Celtics offered Brown (doubtful) that is no brainer.  Everything else probably has it's merits but I'd probably take a GSW package or CJ.
