Having watched him all through college, the dude is just a "winner." That's it. He does whatever needs to be done to win and nothing else matters. He would be incredible with Luka.

Improve your starters (2nd-5th best players) and not work around the edges.

In some ways, we are in the position Phoenix was in a year ago.  Star guard in Booker.  Imperfect Center in Ayton.  Good 3-D wing in Bridges (similar to Luka, KP, DFS).

They had some decent bench pieces that most of us here wouldn't have wanted.  Cam Johnson vs. Maxi?  Saric/Kaminsky vs. Powell/WCS?  Payne vs. Brunson?

They added Crowder with the MLE...roughly equivalent at that point in time to Caruso today.  And obviously the difference maker has been Paul.  Based on age, contract and prior year production, the chorus of experts here was at best luke-warm on him (I predict the next five posts will be the hand full of people who ever said anything positive about CP3 last off-season).  Oh, and don't forget the cost...Oubre, Rubio and a protected first.

The point is we kind of have the same scenario this year.  All of the Paul-like guys have some warts (mainly age).  We see posts that say we don't want any of the 33+ guys.  So, no to Lowry, DeRozan and Conley (but somehow people pine for Dragic).  The young guys are all deemed to be headed to NY or Chicago (or will be retained by their current teams).

There will be risk to whatever we do.  If Phoenix is the model, we will have to send out some salary and draft compensation (which we don't really have).  They still had the MLE because the deal for Paul was a trade match.  That is an important element here.  A trade matched acquisition allows us to keep THJ and use the full MLE.  Is the trade match Maxi/JRich?  Do we have to put Dorian or Brunson in such a deal?  Does one year of Willie have any value?   The need is fairly clear.  We need a point-of-attack 3-D guard next to Luka (like we've failed at two years in a row).  And, we need some kind of Swiss Army Knife big next to KP.  Trade for one, sign the other using the full MLE and keep THJ.  Given the assets we have, it is likely the guy we trade for will have a wart or two.  Hopefully it works out as well as CP3 has in Phoenix.

Like I said in the post above, I think we need a Crowder-like move and a CP3-like move.  Players like Caruso and Batum fit the former.  But, you have to come up with the later.  And, it is at least a possibility that one of these players will need to fit well with KP.  Tall order.
(06-12-2021, 08:32 AM)DanSchwartzgan Wrote: [ -> ]With that said, he does meet Rick's rugged-defender who can knock down 3's and move the ball around a little definition.  I think Caruso's tenacity (versus JRich's timidity) would have been enough to win the LAC series.

The A&M product has been a net positive On/Off every year in his career averaging 5.1 per year (Dorian was the only 1000 minute Mav who beat that number this season).  He's in the 87th percentile on C&S 3's (he's not good a pull up 3's, but won't be asked to take many here).  He's in the 80th percentile in Playmaking Talent (according to BBall-Index).  But what you are getting more than anything is good point-of-attack D.  He takes the other team's ball handler/scorer when he's in the game (usually off the bench).  He's in the 82nd percentile for the percentage of time he takes the other teams primary ball handler and the 82nd percentile for the percentage of time he spends covering Tier 1 Usage players.

LAL was 4.6 points better defensively with him on the floor.  LA's D-Rating is 101.7 when Caruso plays.  That is the best on the team among players who played at least 20 games at 15 minutes per game there.  He's in the following percentiles for the following D-Ratings:

98th   D-LEBRON
96th   D-Raptor
96th   LA DRAPM
89th   D-LEBRON Box

I was going to write up a big piece on Devonte Graham, but I can't decide what the advanced stats are telling me about his D.  Some metrics are really nice and some are just awful.  The data is consistently good on Caruso.  If you don't want to chase old man Danny Green, this isn't a bad way to go to get this archetype.  Caruso isn't the $20 million guy we hope to get, but he would help.  If he were to agree to a deal here, LA would have almost no choice but to take back an opted-in JRich if that is what happens.
Also, he could be nicknamed the Custodian Jr. Sooooo, BONUS!

I saw someone post Batum would be vet min, I can't see that happening.  Curious what folks think his salary would be.  I am still ticked off he sucks in Charlotte and then gifts the Clippers excellent ROI.
Good, so far the Clippers are un-embarrassing us in this game.
I watched the last several of his games. He will play and probably very well but he is not ok.

By many measures he was LA's 3rd best player.  He plays good D and hits 40% of his 3's.  Stealing him weakens an opponent (who doesn't have a path to resigning him above the taxpayer MLE).  If we are operating over the cap, why wouldn't we give him the full MLE for 3 years.  He's basically the Crowder that got away.  If we had him this season, we'd be playing Utah right now.

To me, this is the route you go if you don't/can't pursue Collins or some other high dollar big.  The question then is how do you add to the back-court.  Trade JRich for ?.  S&T THJ for ?.  Move on from THJ and use his cap room for ?

There is a good chance LAC lose both Batum and Reggie Jackson right?   I can't decide if that is a massive blow or just the normal business losing good glue guys that championship level teams need to deal with.    Both have been very good in these playoffs.   Mavs need to find a value or two like these two.

#27 may need to rethink his decision making process.
Interesting to see how the league implements this...

Turner to Mavs confirmed

He was overlooked quite badly, though
Embiid 4/20 17pts
Trae 8/26 25pts

Choke fest. Both missed wide open layups in the last two minutes.

Who is the main assignment guarding Embiid? (wasn't able to watch)
