Why? He is basically expiring next season and his contract might come handy. Not so certain about Ball but I would certainly take that pick it was reported. Unless Mavs are saving Johnson for some pipedream trade some other team will win in the end...

Bledsoe/Ball is the perfect opportunity for the Mavs given their lack of assets.  Taking on a bad contract to get a player you want.  I also think Bledsoe would be fine coming off the bench and you'd probably be losing a rotational piece.

JRich + JJ works financially iirc.

Here I have the answer to that. If you really really like Gordon:

Dal: Bledsoe, Gordon
Orl: Richardson, Green, NO pick
NO: Johnson

That sounds like a fair deal depending on the quality of the NO pick. They have their own picks, Bucks, Lakers etc.

Generally I do hope they will consider such moves, if nothing else materializes.

Cory Joseph + Jabari Parker for James Johnson gives you a trade chip for the summer and a chance to test Jabari Parker. Plus he´s a huge bench upgrade over Johnson for this season.

They could spend the cap space and still sign those three. They are totally irrelevant for the discussion. They had 30 mil of cap space and signed Curry and Wright. They basically dumped Barnes to get that cap space.

I had a similar deal in mind except for Markkanen instead of Gordon.

Dal: Markkanen, Bledsoe
Chi:Lonzo
NO: Johnson, Burke, Chi 1st, and Dal 2nd

I dont see how you can possibly say the jury is still out because some teams gave out bad contracts.  Unless you think Beverly and Seth were the only options with possibly $36 million in cap space.  How do you have max cap space and not manage to sign a single starter?  That's the mind boggling part.  I remember before free agency the big argument on the old forum was whether we could sign 2 really good starters with $28 million in space or we'd have to stretch Lee in order to do it.  Mavs fell asleep at the wheel.  They're not plugged in enough to know every free agent was going to agree before tampering was allowed.

Now we're somewhere in the mid 20s out of 30 teams in terms of tradable assets.

Not using the remaining 10m was even worse. They could have added another legit rotation without going over the luxury tax line but for some reason Donnie and Mark thought that a TPE would be more useful.
Remember back when you could live with Bledsoe being a complete idiot on offense and continually doing stupid things because he was at least good at defense?    Those days are over.   Like most players who just rely on pure athleticism, as soon as they hit the age where they lose half a step they turn into complete and total liabilities.

They didnt need cap space to sign those guys.  They still had a potential $36-38 million to add to the team.

Honestly, I wish they would just admit that they goofed not knowing about the tampering thing.  That would be more reassuring than telling us that was the plan.

So? Bledsoe is not the price in the trades discussed, he is the cost. Or would you rather throw around FRP Mavs don't have

Buying him out would be an AWFUL mistake. Besides the on-court production, you´d have to buy out his full contract including a full 2022/2023 guarantee. The last year of his contract (2022/2023) is only partially guaranteed at $3.9M, which makes him an actual trade asset as early as next season. We could use his "expiring" contract to match Lavine or Beal.

Right. The negotiating through the media is now becoming comical.
Pipe dream would be to land Ball and redirect Bledsoe to another team for a better fitting player (Fournier or a bigger wing) but the Mavs don´t have enough picks to pay the price.
