Mavs made their jump two seasons ago. And then stand pat instead of acting on it. Now the momentum is lost.

I may be sick, but I feel we are not far off, but things need to break perfectly (KP health, Luka being a top 5 player, shooting, etc).  We are one really good player away with some additional fringe moves away imo.  Ideally it would be a big wing (4) who can create, defend, shoot, etc.   The rest of the roster comes together with this player.  They just need that one more really good guy who can create and score.   I know you are a Grant guy.  I am not there to be honest, but I am having trouble identifying that player.    Barnes and Mobley would be ideal but both are not available.  Collins is interesting to me but he is a little limited creating scoring opportunities for himself.    Wood is intriguing but I am not sure if he is the guy to be your last piece.   Would an all in move for Julius Randle work or would that be a defensive nightmare? I don't see a path to Ben Simmons.  He won't create for himself but would bring a lot of other attributes to the table...if he is not broken.

I know this is spilled milk and not the PF I am talking about, but I am afraid to admit how much I have thought about where we would be right now if we took away Hardaway and Bullock and added Derozan to this team.    Sure, the defense may be a major problem, but he is a guy who solves a lot of our issues.   Plus, he is protection of Porzingis being injured about having a guy who can get you buckets.   But analytics thought it was a bad idea.
We're about six weeks form the TDL and it sure seems like there are a lot of broken teams, performing well below expectations, even before COVID.

In the East you have the Knicks, Celtics, Hawks, Pacers and Raptors. All have playoff aspirations but are struggling with losing records. Boston seems to have major chemistry issues and Indiana needs a shakeup. You also have Philly playing below expectations and, at some point, a big Simmons deal.

In the West you have the Lakers, Mavs and Blazers in the same boat with Boston and Indiana. LAL will definitely make deal.

Could be an active trade season.
Very good TDL preview. Mavs mentioned only in relation to Schroeder/Hernangomez.

It's an interesting article but I think Hollinger misses the mark for Dallas. I don't see the Mavs having any interest in taking Dennis Schroder into the trade exception, or including Burke & Ntilikina for Hernangomez.

I don't see Dallas interested in Schroeder considering previous rumors.  I think Dallas will wait for Goran.  If it happens, great.  If not, they will probably see if there is another small move there.

Hollinger mentions Derrick Jones Jr.  Chicago is a surprise player and I wonder if a Bullock for Jones jr. would make sense?  I hate giving up an asset that we prioritized a few months ago so I would probably pass.  Adding Goran and Jones would help even things out, I think.   Jones plays the Powell role but can defend better, but probably not do the small Powell things.   Goran helps this team have two of Luka, Jalen, Goran on the floor at all times.

Not for nothing but Luka throwing lobs to DJJ would be fun.

I feel like Luka has abandoned lob throwing. Last 2 years it felt like he got 3-4 a game easily and maybe more. Now I feel like we'd be lucky if we get 1 every 3 games.

Even with RC I felt like the lobs decreased so I can't even pin it on Kidd's schemes. It might be all in my head though.

Despite that DJJ lobs would be a sight to see.

The article is behind a paywall, but I guess it's Willy and not Juancho? I can't see the Mavs trading for Willy. He has good hands, rebounds decently, but plays no defence and doesn't shoot 3s. That's not the big they are looking for.

You can use archive.is to get around most paywalls, The Athletic included.

He uses Burke and Ntilikina as example of matching salary while stating, that Dallas would likely not be interested. Boston will most likely try to get under tax and dumping Hernangomez is the easiest way to do it.

Juancho

I think it is because opponents pack the paint way more against Mavs and are far more careful about the PnR. Plus Powell lost some of his bounce. Its not like Luka would refuse to do it, if it would be there.

Pretty easy for defenses to pack the paint when Kidd gives KP the greenlight to post up on the block during high PnR...

Yeah, for sure. Last season teams started to get smarter about identifying Powell as the first option (and he was recovering from a horrible injury).

This season, it's not uncommon for at least one teammate, if not two, to be between the screen-roll participants and the basket, along with their defenders. Even when the paint is relatively open, there's almost always someone force-cutting into the paint as the action plays out. This is a GREAT tactic when it's surprise and the cutter's defender gets caught off guard, but the Mavs seem to do it as the main goal of each possession, and sometimes they even do it in response to their defender leaving them to help contain the screen/roll action, which seems extremely counterintuitive to me. That's what you WANT - for your defender to get sucked in so there's an easy pass out to you for a catch-and-shoot opportunity. Following the defender in that situation results in every player from both teams ending up in the paint like they're playing a middle school game and nobody knows what to do.

I totally agree that Luka would be more than willing to throw lobs if they were there. Honestly, I think he and others have often thrown lobs that really weren't open this season, probably out of desperate frustration to create something meaningful on offense.

This is all memory but it seems like Dwight hasn't been great on catching or converting and he's probably the best of the bunch.  DJJ's springs are on another level.

Juancho

ty. It would make absolutely no sense at all to trade Frank for Juancho.
^^ The Athletic is on point with their articles.
Good for Tyrell.  The Grizz have a good track record of developing players.  Good for him to be tied to an NBA team.  It is easy to disappear if you are not in the NBA for a year.   He needs reps.

I was secretly hoping, we would look to him for one of our open two way slots.  But it is probably the best he gets a fresh start somewhere else.
