This isn't a post to say Mavs got the 2020 draft right, but maybe we should halt the chorus that by passing on Bey they passed on a future all star.  I have said from the start, my concern is we passed on Maxey and 1 or two others over Bey.

Bey is on a bad team and so far this year he is averaging 12.5 points on 13 shots while shooting 35 % from the field.   28.5% from three on six shots.   I have not watched Detroit very closely so maybe it is a slump.   But he has gotten off to a rocky start.

Now if he eventually turns into a 36-38% 3 point shooter at that quantity he is a real solid player.   Probably below an all star.  But with hi size and IQ, he is probably a valuable player on a team.

Piggybacking off of Kamm, I don't understand how you think Luka is more likely to leave the Mavs before Jokic might leave Denver?

Luka literally just signed an extension that will keep him here till at least 2026, potentially till 2027. By then Jokic will be 30 and 2 years into whatever new contract he signs.

I don't think it really matters whether or not what Bey's future ceiling is, but that he's just flat out better than Green in almost every way imaginable. Plus he plays a position that is of an incredible need. Imagine if we had Bey instead of Green right now. We wouldn't have had to sign Sterling Brown and/or Reggie Bullock.

They'll think twice before doing anything like that again!

The NBA front office needs to be investigated! While they're at it, investigate the Refs Assoc too!
It is obvious everyone is tampering. It is very likely also that it is impossible to prevent it. Yet NBA somehow decides it is smart to run an investigation on two random cases and slap them on the wrist. The message seems to be - we know you are all tampering, we know we can't prevent you from doing it, just don't do it so openly, because it is important that we maintain the image that no one is tampering.
Kind of like the "student-athlete" nonsense promoted by the NCAA?

Jokic will be 28 when his current contract runs out. If Jokic were to explore free agency it would be THEN. No way the Mavs are parting with Luka before the end of his contract in 5 years. At that point Jokic is in his thirties and things will be very different.

I don't think there is much of a chance (like 1%), but I think Jokic wanting to come to DAL is WAY, WAY higher than Luka ending up on DEN.

Did you just ignore the whole 2nd part of my post?  Our front office is headed by a guy who has never run or even been involved in a front office job and handed a messy situation to boot.  What do we base our irrational optimism on?

As for Luka leaving, contracts mean nothing these days. If Luka comes out tomorrow and says he wants to leave, the Mavs have no choice but to start exploring options immediately . Do I think they will trade him to Denver in that scenario. No. All I am saying is however slim those chances, it still has a higher probability right now than this poorly run franchise has  to entice Jokic.

Also $10MM per team and some non-player suspensions.
NBA also wanted to fine the Mavs for signing a player to the MLE a minute after FA opened, but then they found out it was Reggie Bullock. Cry

Denver has a much better front office and coach.  I don't think Joker and Luka will ever pair up but as far as one of them leaving their current team first, I don't think the conversation is all that lopsided.
Talking about the front office and losing Luka...which I have been afraid of for awhile.  I've been watching the Mavs since 1980/81, whenever the hell it was they started.  Some years ago the Mavs mostly seemed to be a little better ran, but of late(er) the better part of Dirk's playing life was wasted.  I hung on for Dirk's sake.  Well, I guess for my sake too, because I just liked Dirk.  But for the lack of 2' in height...I could have been Dirk's twin!

Well...now we have Luka...and Mav's "brain" trust...are fiddle farting around once again.  I'm willing to give Nico and Kidd a little time to work their "magic".  But if they fiddle fart away Luka's time (like was done to Dirk) and/or lose him to another team...I'm out of here.  I know this strikes fear into the center of their little black hearts, but a man has to do what a man has to to do.  I hung on with the Cowboys long past their throw away date...but I haven't watched a football game since the first year Prescott started.  I can do that with the Mavs as well.  I don't want to.  I like basketball.  I like car racing, too--which I used to do back when the model T was the hot ticket.  But I'm too old to do either anymore.  Maybe advanced international tiddlywinks would work...

Ah man...for want of a couple billion dollars I could have my own team...

The sad part is, Jerry is a much better owner than Cuban and I "gave up" on the Cowboys a while ago.  My football fandom is much more casual these days, the injuries are just too much for me at times.

I posted about this a while back but I guess I'm more of a basketball fan and a Dirk fan than I am of the Mavs.  I'll never back as far away from it as I have from football, but supporting the home town team is just too exhausting at times.  A lot of the MBT decencies were covered up by an all time great and I too think they've gotten worse of late, or rather the general level of front office competency has mostly surpassed Cuban and company.  I feel bad for Luka and I'm not even a massive fan of his (that's not a shot, I just don't have the same connection).

My friendly advice is to just love basketball and enjoy the league.  There are some really fun teams and players I like watching even if they don't wear Mavs uniforms.

A proper punishment would be to let the MBT pick their next FRPs for them in earnest.

Jokic has 2 conference final appearances, had strong squad around him, has good coach, good front office and good young core and better assets IMO.
Above all Denver drafted him in 2nd round when no team was really believing in him, gave him max as soon as his 3rd season was over IIRC, traded Nurkic once they realized his potential.
The story with him is bigger than Mavs and Luka. In some ways I think Jokic owes them more than Luka owes the Mavs
I think Jokic will surely give them the 3rd contract and won't leave as FA.

I do think Luka will also give us that 3rd contract btw, but I am way less sure in it than Jokic tbh.
Let's say I give it 1.5% Luka joins Jokic, and half that for the opposite  Big Grin
