He was vital in slowing CP3 and Booker

I think he’s a good, two-way player, and a fair defender.

Way, way too many blow-by’s for me to think of him as a stopper. I’d say slightly above average.

I think RB and DFS have equivalent D. Neither are stoppers and both are above average defenders, and importantly both consistent on D and good within a team scheme.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree, then.  I think the gap between their levels is significant and growing by the day. I don’t even think DFS has reached his peak level yet.

It’s not that I’m intending to bash Bullock. I’m happy with the signing, and the player. I’m glad he’s a Mav.

I think he is coached to deny the three (one of his strengths statistically going back to NYK) and so that creates more blow-bys, but he really helps limit a team killing you from deep.

I do agree there are occasions wherein this tracks. But, I also think it’s true when Hardaway gets blown by sometimes, too. Past that, I’m reasonably confident that I understand the Mavs’ defensive plan well enough, most of the time, to gauge whether or not this is the case. Not that you’ll trust me, but I’m not talking about system right now.

I wish there was a tracking for blow-bys to check our instincts against. I think DFS gets blown-by just as often as RB. And honestly I don't know many NBA defenders that don't.
I don't think it's really possible to completely stop blow-bys in today's NBA unless the player just sucks at shooting. The goal is always to funnel players to areas you know help can come.

IMO THJ has been fine as a man defender but bad at team defense, which exacerbates Luka's issues along the same lines. Team D is where Bullock and DFS excel, and having both of them(plus Maxi) has had a multiplicative effect on the team D. Having 3 good defenders in the lineup greatly helps the other 2 who are not good at it, whereas having just DFS and Maxi caused them to get overwhelmed by having to cover up for 3 bad defenders. Replacing THJ with Bullock was the key there.

Of course I do think THJ would have been waaaay better than Green or Frank in the playoffs, just because they were so completely useless on offense.

I’m with this, completely. I think it’s a touch harsh towards THJ, but pretty spot on. Good stuff.
Also I think DFS is the better defender overall, but especially important was how durable both DFS and Bullock are. That said we cannot ask them to play 40mpg in another playoffs.

Yes, they need another rotation player, either wing or forward, at a minimum. And that’s not even accounting for replacing Powell at the 5.

The biggest need, by far, is someone in that Green/Ntilikina spot who can be counted on for 22-28 minutes in a playoff game. Because you’re right - DFS and Bullock played so much for so long they weren’t really teaching their ideal contributions by the end of the playoffs. Add that AND replace Powell, and I feel pretty good about things.

I'm not ready to say the answer can't be Green or Ntilikina. After the 2021 playoffs, and after 3 seasons of development, Brunson was a backup who wasn't playoff-playable. After another year of development, he's not the same player.

Green has had 2 years (and the first, with all the covid chaos limiting things) and he grew a lot this past season. It's premature to think he's hit his ceiling. The same with Franky, who has only had one season away from the NY quagmire and is already starting to show some positive signs.

If one of those two can step up, all the better!
I'm forever out on AD after this. Was shooting some random youtube video and in it he says "I haven't even shot a basketball since April 5th."

Dude won a chip and said "Im good, lets collect some checks now". No passion for the game or cares about the position he's in.

If that's the kind of attitude he has after a nightmare season for his team where he isn't even casually maintaining his skills, how does he approach his health? Kind of explains how terrible he's been at staying healthy.

I’m home sick (Covid) watching a bunch more TV than usual.  Just finished Adam Sandler’s NBA movie Hustle.  I think you’ll like it.  Maverick cameo’s from Dirk, Luka, Cuban and Boban plus former Mav Curry (and future Mav Tobias Harris Smile ).  Juan Hernangomez and Anthony Edwards have the biggest parts and do a really nice job.  Feel good story with tons of real NBA folks playing roles.  Available on Netflix.

I watched it. It was ok.

Too much training montage and not enough actual basketball for me.

Now I'm yearning to go find Fast Break with Gabe Kaplan and watch it again.

I like JET but I don't see him as a NBA coach.  I want him to do well though.

There is even more Smile Lukas agent Duffy, Cuban and Greg St. Jean. It is basically Phi-Dal production. Very obvious the Harris trade was agreed on the set Smile
It's not surprising that there was a strong DAL contingent in the film. I forgot the name of it, but Cuban owns some type of production company and was single-handedly responsible for ruining Entourage.
