Listening to NBA Radio this morning and they were giving Aaron Gordon some hate for not being more aggressive driving to the basket. I didn't see the game, but they thought he didn't bring enough. His line was 3-9 (1-4), 5reb, 2 assists.

I do remember some here were very interested a few years ago, not saying he's bad but I wonder if all of DEN has their heart in advancing in the POs.
Was it last season, or as recently as this that some were saying Smart isn’t as good defensively as people are saying, or he is slipping or something like that?

It was me saying that (and a ton of national media guys). Two things are true:

1) He has been slipping for years (this next part is only my opinion, but I doubt he deserved the award - I haven't seen one national guy who agrees with it yet, but clearly there are some who voted for him)

2) I haven't been as checked into the Celtics post hehe, so maybe he had a much better season this year than I realize.

Right. I read dozens of opinions just like that after the announcement. Seems like the national-level group think was pretty shocked he won the award.
I myself am caught off guard to it, but either way, it doesn’t point to slippage when he gets even 1 vote.

Until you remember that some of the people voting know less about him than YOU do.

If Mavs would be third and Dubs fourth, we would still avoid them Smile

First, I didn’t think there was such a person. Second, it’s still 1 more attention seeking vote than DFS got.

So I try to engage about Smart, and now we're making this Smart vs. DFS? I'm not sure I see how we got there, other that just a desire on your part to be a curmudgeon about literally any topic.

I suspect that what's "fun" about this place for you doesn't align very well with what's fun for me. Conversations like this one (especially knowing where it's going if it continues) are the reason I haven't been around much, lately.
On a serious note, while I don't think DFS should be DPOY, I don't really think he's all that far away from deserving a defensive team spot.  His name should at least be in the conversation.  He just doesn't get the talked about much by NBA writers.  You should watch Mitchell talk about DFS in the tweet I posted.  Then you should watch the Utah broadcast of the game last night.  They pointed out time and time again how Utah worked to get DFS switched off of Mitchell in favor of the Bullock matchup.  As Mitchell pointed out, DFS is a rare combination of size, quickness and athleticism on the defensive end.  I think he deserves more than the "good defender" label.

Game knows game.
Yeah, @"cow" cow, I loved that Mitchell interview. And subsequently, it hurts a little bit to like Mitchell. It was better when I didn't know that he was such a thoughtful dude.

I'm not sure I understand the origins of the Mitchell hate.  There aren't a ton of guys that want to play in Utah.  Imagine if we'd drafted him over DSJ.

I don't hate him at all, and yes, the Mavs should've drafted him.

I DO think (only my opinion) that he gets a little more respect as a superstar than he deserves. He's a nice player, but routinely gets called a superstar. I'm not sure he's there, personally.

So you'd rank him a McCollum level player?

Come on LeBron Donovan, put your Dallas jersey on.

The discussions since Luka's injury haven't been super fantastic but hopefully you come back around.  I haven't been very engaging lately because of work but still feel there's plenty of fruitful conversations to be had here.

I think McCollum is a good comp, we're seeing what McCollum is really capable of in a similar role now and the results seem somewhat similar.

I do think Mitchell is due for a huge game against us in this series still (he did score 50+ if you look at the second half of game 1 and the first half of game 2) but it feels like he's always gunning for a huge game which is going to lead to a lot of inconsistency and inefficiency at times which is what we've witnessed so far.

That....and DFS is just really awesome at clamping down the stretch of games.

Good question...I guess, yeah. I mean, he's younger, so maybe a little higher than McCollum?? I don't have an accurate read on the comparison because CJ has never had to carry the same type of load Mitchell does.

But, I think Mitchell gets a push to his rep because he's (to your point) in a market where stars won't go. He's the primary offensive weapon there, so of course the full machinery of the Jazz pushes constantly to make him as big of a star as possible.

I think he's very, very good, don't get me wrong. Definitely capable of taking over 1-3 games of this series, for sure. I'm just not scared of him the way I have been of Kawhi Leonard these past two years, for example. Or Jokic, if Denver was the opponent. Etc, etc.
