Good thing Luka’s extension kicked in before this.  Jokic just got a nice raise.

This news hit as NBA Front Office podcast was recording.  Keith Smith said Maxi’s deal is $11mm even for 3 years.  He thought Maxi’s number was good value and was set at a place where it will be a nice trade matching chip this summer and beyond.

For sure. It's basically PJ Tucker money, which imo is the right range for Kleber. This is just what it costs to get a 3&D Big, and honestly, those dudes will always be tradable, imo.

KS is wrong if he said that. Unless I'm just clueless on the rules.*

In theory, a 33M deal with 8% raises could start as low as $10.185M. Math and CBA limits. And the most Maxi can get in 1st year would be $10.8M. Extension rules.

So if he's truly getting $33M, it starts between those 2 numbers, and can't be a flat deal.

.......

*EDIT: As it turns out, I was indeed clueless on the rules ...and KS could be right. I trust he is. See explanation in posts below.

Can extensions be calculated off the average salary if it is higher?

The general ceiling on an extension is 120% of the prior season salary (which is where I got the 10.8, based on his prior salary of 9.0).

Yes, there is an allowable adjustment if the salary went down in the final season. But then the allowable raise is a smaller pct. But Maxi's salary went up, not down, so that didn't come into play and make a difference.

But in looking for that answer, I found another exception to the "20% of prior salary" ceiling that apparently did. For players below the league's "estimated average salary" (which is 10.792M), it can be up to 120% of that EAV number, which pushed Maxi's ceiling to almost 13M.

So his starting salary limit was never 10.8M as I had thought it was, and the 11-11-11 was easily doable.

Thanks for the info, DS.

Liking that post doesn’t feel right. Thanks for sharing the news. I consider myself well equipped with words but I have doubts many could write about that senseless tragedy with as much grace as Tjarks and his wife. To leave behind such a young child while in the middle of your years - heartbreak in the truest sense. Fare thee well, Jonathan.

That is probably the easiest explanation, but I would love to sign him to a two way and have him rehab for the year.
Yes, give me Liddell, please!

Man, why didn’t Cuban get a $10M fine and 1 year suspension. Suns get all the luck!
