Well, at least he's not another center.
From Stein:

Quote:The Kings are said to be preparing an offer in the $50 million range to bring back in-demand center Richaun Holmes – with Holmes said to be seeking bigger numbers.

Quote:Beyond the extension for Dončić, retaining Marjanović is the one certainty about the Mavericks’ offseason that has already seen them move away from a planned pursuit of Lowry.

He's that perfect 6'8" wing the Mavs need to guard the perimeter.
That´s why Hollinger got fired from his GM jobs. DeRozan signing the MLE with Miami.  If that happens and Lowry S&Ts for 100/3, I want the Cayman Islands bank accounts of Dyle Dowry and Kemar LeRozan closely monitored for any suspicious transfers from Rat Piley.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this (and I don't hate Markkanen - kind of like him, actually), but:

I was kind of hoping Donnie leaving would result in more Americans on the team. Not because I think they're better (the opposite might be true) but because I really believe that Cuban will ALWAYS be on this free agency tip, and it's clearly a fraternity.

This is one of the reasons I liked the Lowry idea.

Markkanen, Hield, Bagley is a much better path than Lowry 3/90M. Thank you Miami.

That would be amazing
KP: What are we going to?
Luka: We are going to kill them all!!!
Lauri. Wrong. We are going to FINNISH them all.

Sorry I apologize.

OK, that's cool, but they can't have Maxi

Same concern but I arrived at a different conclusion. Mavs, Spurs and Nuggets are probably the hotspots for international players in the league. Embrace it and focus on them in free agency. Marrkanen seems to be the only player that wants to join the Mavs at all cost and even though he isn´t great he is still a talent upgrade.
I absolutely hate it when they don´t take advantage of situations like this. Same for the local guys. Randle was willing to sign for less to come home but the Mavs had no interest.
For a team that continues to fail in free agency the few advantages of the location are important. Focus on local guys and international players.

Since they aren't getting a clear #2 Superstar this FA, they need to pivot to trade asset acquisition, because, with Luka's extension, if they get a great player, it's coming through trade.  Whether it's through KP increasing his trade value, and needing assets to put around him as a trade value or another package, that's the next place acquisition of a major player will happen....

Poking around on the Celtics realgm page I saw multiple people mention how much his defense has fallen off lately. I wouldn't have thought that at all a few days ago.
But really modern defense greatly undervalues individual perimeter defense. All about what you have in the interior and how well your team defense functions overall. I also feel guys like Richardson and Wright would have been way more important even just 10 or 15 years ago.
People turn against them when they're not these magical perimeter fixes but I'm not sure those exist at the moment

It's a good point.  I always felt a little bad for Wright/Richardson as one smallish perimeter defender isn't going to change your teams defensive fortunes.

If you can find a lock down defender available, I'm all for it. Leonard is staying with the Clippers and Smart isn't that anymore. Otherwise, let Green get some minutes. I just don't see a path to get better on that side of the ball so lets shoot everyone out of the gym.

Fair points, and a good perspective.

In the modern league, there are maybe three PREMIUM players who are foreign born. One of them is here already. Another was clearly the target of the longterm free agency plans here but opted to re-sign with his team and just won a championship. The other is free when, 2023?

My point is, if the Mavs lean further into the Euro connection, I don't think that jives with the free agency splash plan. I agree that getting the best Euros here isn't a bad strategy, I just have this feeling Cuban won't be satisfied until he lands his legendary big fish.
One of the interesting side stories so far. Complete silence on all things KP. Based on the latest statement  they want to give him one more season to improve but I also wouldn´t be suprised if the first announcement of the day will be a KP trade.

AMEN to that. All the Europeans that are now 20-23 years old. Guess what they watched in the middle of the night ten years ago? DIRK! One of them, taking down the mighty Heat with LeBron James.

Mavs can´t let it go to waste. Porzingis was star-struck sitting next to Dirk in that Africa piece. You think Porzingis wanted to come to Dallas, because our franchise trajectory was so great or because we had done such a bang-on job over the last 10 years. The only reason he was cool with coming to Dallas was Dirk.

It wouldn't surprise me if KP gets moved.  We know there was some smoke around the TDL and of course the MBT will say all the right things about KP.  I just have a hard time coming up with a team that would be interested who would also be a good trade partner.

I don't think he wanted to come to Dallas.  I'm sure he love Dirk as almost everyone does.

That or DP.

One of them is going to be gone via trade, I would bet a lot of money on it.
