WHOA.....that is RICH for Trent Jr. I hope the Mavs take the "thrifty" route and create some albatross contracts this summer.
I feel like Dragic has negative value at that contract price, so not surprised Toronto would want more.

Dragic is YOUNGER than Lowry (both 35) and is a relatively comparable player and has been a better player in on/off impact the last couple years. Dragic is 1 yr/$19M and somehow that is a negative while Lowry at 3 yrs/$90M is what everyone is clamoring to pay.

I mean clearly Riley doesn't agree. He might be wrong but... there might be a reason NBA teams around the league desperately want Lowry.

You are completely right.....it just confuses the hell out of me. I keep looking and looking and looking for the angle I am missing on Lowry....and I cannot find it. What is so appealing? I have no idea when I look at the evidence of the last two seasons.

Are you really suggesting that Dragic is in same class as Lowry?

When I look at the data of the last two seasons I do not see Lowry as a much superior player.

What am I missing?

I get that Lowry has the mystique of being some sort of alpha dog in the NBA world....but I am talking about actual recent play.

Trying to maximize Butler's window and the supporting cast is strong.   It's an all in move.   The Heat roster is a tier above the Mavs, maybe two.  Even still, if I was a Heat fan and that 3rd year is guaranteed, I'd be a little queasy paying Lowry 3/90 especially if I'm giving up Precious plus another player.  The Pelicans interest is odd to me.  Maybe they are out on Lonzo and just want a PG that will not mind Williamson handling the ball so much but can help settle the team in crunch time.

I mean the advanced stats like RPM and BPM both have Lowry wildly better than Dragic in both years.  Lowry has been known to be a plus defender and Dragic has been know not to be.  They both showed signs of their age last year, but Lowry looks like a gentle decline and Dragic looks like he might be falling off a cliff.  I would have been more than happy to take Lowry at 2/50 (3/90 is too much) but I have no interest in Dragic at 1/19, especially because we wont easily be able to replace him.  Now if it involves sending Powell out, I am interested.

And they don't know, that this slide ends with Kemba.

Let's hope it stops before that.
It could be a situation where Lowery could be a KL package deal.

I would not be surprised if there is some teaming up being planned here.

It's just using most of our cap space on him (while also sacrificing THJ, the TPE, and the larger MLE) that I don't love. So you're right -- it's all about how you make it happen while maximizing our ability to improve the team.

Quite a few people have said they'd happily pay the MLE for Dragic.  If it is simply Powell to Toronto and Dragic here, he's coming for the net cost of $8.3mm.  Clearly with five centers, something has to give.  So this makes sense and a short term deal on an older guy is better than a multi-year overpay.  You'd have $22mm to spend after doing this as doing it this way uses space.

Depending on how Miami handles things (or if you involve a 4th team), You might can get to a trade match if Willie goes out in the same deal (Burke isn't enough).  At that point you are either down to KP/Moses/Boban at Center or you use space on Holmes (so Holmes/Moses/Bobi at C) and move KP to PF.

If you do a trade match using Powell and Willie, you'd spend $30 million of space first and do the deal last.  You've not solved the need for a shot creator next to Luka on a permanent basis.  But, you also are getting Dragic for very little cost on a net basis.
Question of the day. Which team will be randomly punished for tampering even though the entire league announces their signings a few minutes into the moratorium.

The Lakers I would guess. Hell, LeBron, AD and Russ met at Bron's house to discuss playing together, a couple of weeks ago. And lo and behold, Russ is a Laker.  Isn't that tampering?
Gonna lose it if Mavs sign Dimwiddie for $20 million when Reggie Jackson is right there
If the Mavs whiffed put at all top free agent targets. And, thry truly believe KP can be three second star alongside Luka, or at the very least, believes they can rehabilitate his value, I would like to do the following mid-level signings to fill the roster:

1. Sign Danny Green to 10M a year,
2. Sign Daniel Theis to 10M a year,
3. Sign Caruso or Burks to a 10M a year,
4. Sign Iguodala to RMLE,
5. Trade Powell, Burke, WCS for something.

Potential Starting line up:

PG Luka
SG Iggy (Secondary ball-handler, veteran)
SF DGreen (3&D vet)
PF KP
C Theis (roller, spacer, defender, hustler)

Bench:
PG Brunson
SG Caruso or Burks
SF DFS
PF Maxi
C Moses Brown

End of the Bench guys:
Bobi
Terry
Green
Hinton
Bey on 2WC
etc.
I am not a fan of Dinwiddie signing.   Tore ACL in college; Partial tear last year.  Does anyone know if this is the same knee or different knees.  Regardless, he is not good enough for the risk for me.

We will see if this front office is better at laying bread crumbs and closing than the previous regime.  When the Mavs were hoping for Lowry, the rest of the league wasn't waiting around.  So hopefully the Mavs were organized, honest and working on other deals as secondary moves.

For me, for this offseason to be viewed as really good there needs to be a surprise move.   I don't really see a really good offseason with just the free agents out there.   It may not need to be a large move, but just a move that improves us that fits with everything else.
