LOL And just like everyone has been saying, here we go again. Sorry bro, but in the context of this thread, not really interested in playing "prove it to Kamm's satisfaction and at his whims." I saw it over and over. If you didn't notice, and want your own "reality," believe what you want.

No, the Lakers were busy picking up cheap players.
RE: Stein

Just a few thoughts to make sure my position is clear.

1) The dude us a "Tier 1" NBA reporter, no question. Not doubting that one bit.

2) He has deep connections in DAL and historically has been the most connected reporter in DAL. No question.

3) But it felt to me like the tenor of his reporting was different this year. It was suggested to me that it might come from his need to drive traffic to his new independent gig using twitter as a vehicle for that. That sounds like a good theory. But might there be more going on?

4) With the change at the top of the Mavs organization I just wonder how connected Stein is to Nico. Is he getting stuff from Nico directly or from guys down the ladder who may only have a more peripheral understanding?

5) Is Stein ever a mouthpiece for Bartelstein?

6) Stein clearly has connections to DAL still, but is it possible that Nico (and company) purposely fed him certain information that THEY wanted public? Is it possible the interest in Lowry was real (at a certain price point) but the Mavs presented a more serious interest publicly through Stein (as a favor to Bartelstein or to drive up Lowry's price so other targets might be available)?

Jake Fischer first connected JRich to BOS. Jake Fischer first connected Sterling Brown to DAL. It didn't feel to me like Stein was at the forefront this year like he used to be. Are Jake Fischer's sources in DAL? Or is it more likely Jake Fischer got things from the BOS end or from an agent?

So this. If you would have told me at 7:00 am this morning that the Mavs were going to make zero moves today, I would have first of all told you to let me sleep in peace, but then I would have laughed and said that was a good one - surely they weren't going to do nothing on day two after doing hardly anything on day one.

I thought so, too, but I just assumed he was getting MORE solid and frequent info. Less of Cuban's "if you read about us involved with something, it's not true" method. To me, this makes sense, given the changes.

Whatever the case might be, I have a tough time discounting Marc Stein.

I don't think it matters anymore, though. At least not until the next round of rumors.

You said: "On Mav moves, Stein was consistently ahead this summer. When they got something done, he was the guy that knew it first. When they were close, he knew it first."

So I went back to look and here is the "reality" not what we want to "believe"....

  • Jake Fischer was first on JRich trade possibility to BOS. Shams was the first to announce the trade.
  • Jake Fischer was first on Sterling Brown connection. Shams was first on the contract.
  • Tim MacMahon was first on Cauley-Stein likely getting picked up. Shams was first to announce it officially.
  • Stein was the first to announce Reggie Bullock contract.
  • Stein was first on the Mavs confidence of Boban returning.

So Stein was not first on everything this summer. He was first on two of the five things I looked up. So yeah, my memory was right that he wasn't the first on everything Mavs this summer (and I was busy when Reggie Bullock was first announced so I didn't know he was first until going back and looking). And what he was first on he did not leak in advance (unless you consider the Boban contract an early leak), whereas Fischer and MacMahon had actual early scoops.

This is pretty much the extent of my Josh Hart knowledge.

Sold!

Looking around the Toronto boards and it seems some of them want Green AND Terry for Dragic. I would certainly not do that.

I suspect in the end the deal will be something like Powell+Burke+1 sophomore for Dragic. If I had to guess I'd say Green, just because the Mavs added a bunch of 3&D wings in the offseason and it's hard to see how he'd find playing time anyway.

If you're right, that will be a day I'll try to duck out of here for while.
The best news with this Toronto ordeal is the another team has interest in Green and Terry.  I've been pretty down on both of them and didn't think they had much value.  Maybe this good lead to bigger things like Siakam though I'm not getting my hopes up.

I understand. But I'm definitely concerned about how Green would be able to get minutes even if he's still here. And if your 1st-round pick can't get minutes in his second season, when will he start getting them?

Green is a 2/3, and the Mavs just added a handful of 2/3 guys, in addition to the ones they already had, and Dragic would be yet another guy playing the 2 at times next to Luka. The Mavs have THJ, DFS, Brunson, Bullock, and Brown all playing the wings next to Luka, even if some of them might play PG or PF at times. We'd be adding Dragic on top of that. Where will Green get his minutes?

Josh Green can't even get minutes for his national team.

A good point, I think.

I still don't think the Mavs spending one of their best young assets on a 35 year-old on an expiring contract will go over well.

@"Kammrath" wants him in the rotation so badly that he's dreaming up ways of trading DFS!
Interesting idea from Twitter. Can any of our resident capologists confirm if this is possible?

Quote:Interesting idea from WMB here that I'll spin off of: Baynes as a trade piece.

If the Mavs don't want to include Green, and instead propose a deal like Powell, WCS and Terry (and say a couple 2nds) for Dragic and Gillespie, the Raps could have one more ask: take Baynes.

Quote:You might ask why they would do this; they can just waive Baynes. But this way they generate a 7.35M TPE. That's not a huge prize, small TPEs are only kind of useful, but it's something. Worth holding up the deal over, though? Not really.

Quote:Here's the trick though. Instead of using Baynes to create his own little TPE, they use him to salary match. The Raptors send Baynes into the Richardson TPE, fully guaranteed at 7.35M, and in return are able to absorb up to 12.35M of salary for him. That would be Powell (11.1M).

Quote:That would mean Powell isn't coming back in the Lowry trade, he's coming back in the Baynes trade (from the Raptors' POV). Meaning the Lowry trade is Lowry (30M) for Achiuwa (2.7M), WCS (4.1M), maybe Okpala too (1.8M). And picks. That's 30M going out and 8.6M coming back.

Quote:Well, since that 30M is all in one outgoing player, that means the Raptors generate a 21.4M TPE. That's potentially very useful, far more so than a small 7M TPE, especially at the deadline, draft and in free agency next year, when it will still be valid.

Quote:Oh, I left Terry out above as he can fit into one of the Raps' existing TPEs from when they traded Thomas and Davis at the deadline. Increases that TPE by his 1.5M.

If the Raps are pushing for this, expect a resolution by tomorrow or for them to try to push Baynes' decision date

So Stein was not first on everything this summer.

Thank you for looking those up. To add to your list, in the last week Stein also broke the Mavs news on Finley's promotion, and on the THJ deal. And I think he KNEW (and basically BROKE) insider info reflecting Mavs interest in Kawhi first, and then Lowry, until they fell short on those targets.

But you're right, Stein was not the first on EVERYTHING this week. Although to be accurate, before, he wasn't ALWAYS the first then either.

My assessment of the evidence has me not buying the idea that he's somehow found himself on the outside looking in.

When you say you wonder if his sources with the Mavs are not the same, isn't that an obvious "yes" -- Donnie is out of the equation. As to whether he (or anyone) will have similar access with Nico as with Donnie, of course that remains to be seen. But we also must remember --- if we assume Cuban is still in the loop to the same degree, and will be on top of whatever is breaking, MC likes to stay loyal. And Stein has known Grant and Finley - also in the loop - for more than 20 years.

Creative, to be sure. There's layers of cap nonsense in there. Some details are fuzzy, so its viability is uncertain. Hate it from the Mavs end -- it's pure TOR homerism in total.
Going back to Green and the rotation, let's look at the guys ahead of him:

-THJ didn't turn down a bigger offer from the Pels to play a lesser role. He's obviously back to do the same thing as last year.

-DFS, we know what his role is gonna be.

-Bullock obviously didn't sign here for fun- he's here to take over JRich's role, he's gonna get his 24mpg, and he's been much more reliable at the one skill you absolutely need to play off of Luka.

-If Dragic comes that's obviously even less wing/guard minutes for Green.

-The only question mark really is Brunson, as his future with the team is unclear. But that just makes holding onto Terry as insurance more critical, and Dragic would presumably eat up most of his minutes.

-Sterling Brown is probably an end of bench guy, but then so is Green right now. Again, we can presume the Mavs signed Brown with at least the intent of using him at some point.

It sounds like Toronto is asking for BOTH Green and Terry right now, I'm guessing the Mavs are saying why should we give you either, and the final compromise will be one of them. I already explained why I think it will be Green.
How about this trade, Raptors don’t end up with a young guy but could get a $10mil TPE and a $7mil TPE

Dallas get Dragic
Raptors get Favors, get TPEs and save a lot of money.
OKC get WCS, Burke Mavs 2025 2nd + Baynes Raptors 2nd.

Cuban gets to keep Powell as well!!!!!!
Don't think that's CBA legal. The Mavs must send out about $15 million to get Dragic back.
