If we have really lost out on Lowry, then the best examples I have of how this free agency could go deeply south for the Mavs are Oubre and Derozan. I firmly believe that if you give either of those guys a multiyear at around $20M per, you have 1) made your on-court team substantially worse (I was on board with Derozan for a brief time because of his playmaking/midrange scoring, but on further reflection NO), and 2) cluttered up your roster with another albatross contract. To me, either of those would be far worse than Lowry at 3/90. 

On the other hand, if the Mavs move from THJ and do Holmes/N. Powell, that's enormously better than Lowry would have been.

Agreed. The Mavs realizing their mistake and NOT doubling down on it would buy so much cred from me, personally.

Then, all of a sudden all of these Holmes rumors would actually make sense.

Things look bleak, but how much of the intel are we gathering from unreliable sources (DB.com, E Massey) and Jake Fischer who I think we all respect but is new to this gig. Just food for thought.

Yeah, there's just no way to tell what's legit and what's not at this time of year, and we can't remind each other of that enough.
