Honestly, I would not doubt it if you said Cato’s job was much different than Donnie’s.

My fear about this report is the literal interpretation - that they'll do "anything," which includes the one single thing I don't want to see in any possible case this offseason - wait on someone.

KL: I need a few days to think about it.
Mavs: Decided yet? Our first three backup plans are toast.
KL: Maybe...
Mavs: Decided yet? Our next five backup plans are toast.
KL: I think I'll...
Mavs: Decided yet? Even THJ and all of the good MLE targets are gone.
KL: I'm gonna stay with LAC.
Mavs: .....

Don't. Wait. On. Anyone. Period. I give zero effs who it is, Kawhi, JC, CP3, whoever - if they haven't made up their mind by 5 pm EST on 2 August, move the effing effity-eff on.

I could handle some Green at the right price.
I don't think it's unreasonable to hold out hope for Kawahi.

My best guess is he certainly opts out. He can sign a big one-year deal in Dallas, sit out a year to rehab and walk into a handshake max contract the following season. That maximizes his earnings potential and puts the Mavs on Nets & Lakers level superteam status with two top five players and KP as the third option. Very enticing offer from a front office Kawahi can trust.

Approach it like free agency 2014. When Melo didn’t commit early, the Mavs quickly moved onto Parsons. It ended up being a decent offseason on paper.
Speaking of learning from last time all Kawahi “news” is meaningless. He does have a plan but we will not know it until it happens. The only way he comes here is because he really wants to join Luka and thinks being in Dallas is what is best for him. He clearly does respect Luka and maybe that is enough. But we know from the past it will all be done Kawahi’s way.

Man, ain't that the truth.

NOBODY knew what he'd do the last time around. I'm a little too scared of Uncle Dennis to allow myself to get excited about this.
Kawhi and Luka on the same team.  Skip Bayless am cry.

The exact kind of player the Mavs need with Luka.

I think he would be a good fit...

That being said IDK if I can stomach signing him. I just hate that guy because of all the memes. Like it's nothing he's done necessarily.

I don't think this would happen because I think Kidd seems to have some KP hope and I don't think the Mavs want to trade low on him, but would you entertain (Locked On floated it, forgive me if you guys have already dissected this idea)...

some type of package that includes KP for Buddy Heild and Marvin Bagley?

I think I would need pick #9 in order to do it. I think Buddy while a nice upgrade over THJ is not really that big of an upgrade. Plus you wouldn't resign THJ and may not get to recoup any value there.

Bagley doesn't have any value IMO.

Maybe throw them Josh Green and/or one of the young rookies?
I don't think they would be interested in that deal tho.

Agree about Kidd.  He deserves an Academy Award if he was just pumping sunshine regarding KP and there is a trade soon.

With that said Shams, as recently as yesterday, reported Dallas is in on Holmes.  Shams is really well connected and Holmes works with a single client agent.  I get that reporters do the bidding of agents at times, but this isn’t some power broker agent. Its just Pedro.

So, is there a world in which KP is staying and we are interested in Holmes?  Kidd has specifically said he’d like to get KP back to NY-KP.  Guess what?  KP played with a Center next to him almost all of the time in NY.  He was +3 defensively his first season and +5 his second.  I get that the NBA has changed since then and most presume 5-out is the only way this can work.  But, we have a new sheriff in town and we will definitely have a new way of doing things defensively.  The other issue is that we would have a kagillion dollars invested in bigs if we keep KP/DP/Maxi and add Holmes (and we don’t have much of anything left over for a secondary ball handler).

Like most of our other options…not ideal.  But I’m pretty sold that Kidd is keeping KP and I’m struggling to understand the chorus that is singing the Holmes to Dallas song if KP is indeed staying.

I mean, if anyone could get Simmons to shoot the ball more it would be that GSW vet team.

I've posted this on the discord a few times... But I really don't think Kawhi is going to lead you on if you don't have a shot at him.
There is no incentive to use the Mavs as leverage for any reason. He'll get his max and the Clippers will be doing everything they can to improve the team.

Kawhi isn't going to lead his friend Nico on. I'm not sure how good of friends they are but they have a good relationship from their time working together. I don't think he's going to be telling him he's considering the Mavs when he isn't.
Now he may consider the Mavs and then go elsewhere still. But if come free agency Mavs haven't been told otherwise, I think they are under very real consideration.

Perhaps the reason the door is opening is because something behind the scenes like Nico recruiting him. Or maybe the injury has Clippers hesitant about everything.

If Kawhi leaves, I think it's because some sort of trust issue broken with LAC. Perhaps he can see the roster is going to take a step back this year but considering he may not even play, I don't know if that's going to be a huge concern by him if he's even the type of guy to take stuff like that into consideration.

I think he would trust Nico based on their past working relationship which will be a big reason why he would come here. Or perhaps it was having to play Luka and be like this MF is just too dang good and realizing that teaming up would result in winning some championships together.

He is probably the closest thing to prime Draymond in the current NBA. With all the strengths and weaknesses. Would be the perfect replacement. Problem is that Draymond is still on the roster. Would be awesome on defense but even with Curry and Thompson spacing would be a problem.

The simplest explanation is that we should probably spend some time talking about potential Maxi/Powell trades.
