I forgot about Brunson's surgery.  That takes two of our top nine out of action.  Assuming Curry starts, you have KP, DFS, THJ, Curry and Luka.  The bench is pretty thin with Wright and Kleber being the main cogs.  Yes, we have some next tier guys who will have to play because stamina is going to be an issue (Barea, WCS, Jackson, Boban and Lee).  But, the dropoff from Powell/Brunson to those guys is fairly substantial.

So, we get a healthy Luka/KP combo, but our bench goes from a strength to a weakness.  Suddenly how well Courtney Lee stayed in shape during the last 3 months is hugely important.
I think WCS with JJB will be pretty close to him and DP if they get to work practicing on it. WCS already has rim rolling in his arsenal, so it shouldn’t take much to develop that chemistry. JJB has been a big part of that bench being what they have been in recent years (whether he was coaching on or off the court). Bench unit being a mix and match of all those guys CAN be pretty lethal, this whole team was always gonna be about teamwork and chemistry this year anyways, not dearth of talent.

There is a pretty sizable drop-off to date between Powell/Brunson and WCS/JJB.  The latter two were both underwater in on-court/off-court while lineups with Powell or Brunson were positive.  Powell was a starter averaging 26.5 minutes while WCS was a bit player averaging 12 minutes in games he was used at all.  Barea will be able to run the show offensively as he always has for spurts.  The question is whether we can put enough D around him to keep from losing ground when he’s on the court.

Little known fact...Courtney Lee averaged 18.9 mpg in the 14 games post the trade deadline.  My reference to the success of the bench being dependent on how well Lee stayed in shape the last 3 months was a reference to this.  I suspect he will get more minutes than either Barea or WCS.  In fact, it wouldn’t shock me to see him start and Curry come off the bench.  If Curry starts then Lee, Wright and Kleber can help protect Barea.  But, if Lee starts, then Curry and Wright will get most of the bench ball-handling duties and Barea’s role will be diminished.

I don't disagree with you at all. The current talent/contributions of all names considered is sizeable. However, JJB has had time to get some rest after being able to play some after his surgery, there might be SOME reason to think he COULD go on a small run of stellar play, esp seeing as we need him to. If he can get to last year's ability, there won't be much of a drop off from Brunson if there is one at all (I realize that is best case scenario). It really stems on that though, cause his ability to get back to that makes WCS that much more dangerous if those two can develop enough chemistry together to connect on 3/4 of the lobs JJB used to throw to DP.

I also agree that Lee's contribution is a big lynch pin in all this. I think RC will play him as a starter as he tends to like keeping second string players in the roles that they're used to and leap frog third string players (esp veterans) to the starting unit.
Big question after the layoff: Can Doncic return to the MVP-caliber form he displayed before suffering two right ankle sprains?

The time off allowed Doncic, who was also dealing with thumb and wrist injuries, to heal. There were rumblings he gained weight during the hiatus, but Mavs sources said he has been working out diligently and playing pickup ball since returning to Slovenia in March.

Even if he doesn’t (which won’t happen), we’ll have KP step up to that level!!!
I think a healthy rested Doncic will be in BEAST MODE.  He doesn't have to worry about protecting his wrist from hackers.  His three point shot is better when he has his legs under him.  If Curry and THJ are hitting, this team can be so dominant on offense.

Speaking to Russian news outlet RIA Novosti (h/t EuroHoops.net), Jure Drakslar explained that Doncic is "not in the best shape" right now, but isn't concerned about the All-Star guard being ready when games resume:

“We have been working together for the last three weeks. Luka was previously in quarantine and trained individually at home. The last three weeks we have been working hard to prepare him for the resumption of the NBA season. ... Most players struggled to stay in shape. Doncic is no exception. We understand his role in Dallas. Luka is improving every day. He puts in a lot of effort. He has completely dedicated himself to be ready."
