Collins to the Mavs confirmed...
If the Mavs miss the playoffs, which looks possible, it should be a new GM making those “big” moves.  You just can’t afford to waste any time when the future of the franchise (Luka’s decision to stick around) is at stake. Usually, when a team acquires a transcendent player, they do a better job of roster building. The Mavs have gone sideways or backwards the last two offseasons. That’s two too many.

Has it suddenly dawned on Luka that finding a way for the whole team to compete at a high level to win those 72 - all of them - was vital? There's been a bit of entitlement sprouting. If he wants to win a lot, it takes a whole team, and all of them being motivated to play well -- which is the job of the team leader and ball distributor.

If that isn't fixed, a change in the roster won't move the needle.

It's not a mistake for entertainment and that is what the NBA is.

There is going to be GREAT intrigue with those games and they are going to draw attention. I fully expect the Mavs to be knocked out of the play in tournament and for it to be great entertainment and drama in the process.

As a Mavs fan it will suck....but for the NBA as a whole it will be a good thing.

It will certainly suck and gain the ire from the fan base if the higher seed gets knocked out, but I'd hope it would cause less teams to tank which has implications beyond just the tanking team(s).
It's all about the $$$.

From a competitive standpoint, it is stupid.  What's the point of the regular season if 2/3 of the league makes the playoffs?  and one bad week can ruins 6 months of work.

It's even worse in baseball with the 1 game playoff.

I like the European soccer setup much better but it's too late to go back now.

OTOH if your team can't win one out of three games from the 9th or 10th best team in your conference, what chance to they have of taking a 7 game series from the 1st or 2nd seed?

I just checked to make sure, but the play in is a single game, not best of three. Any team can beat any team in a single game. Best of 3 would be better, but that would put a (potentially) ton more games on the 8th seed. I guess that works out on a revenue basis for that team.

I read it wrong but I don't think you are correct either unless I'm reading the wrong FAQ (It's two games, the lower seed needs to win one game to get into the playoffs):

Q: When is the Play-In Tournament?

The Play-In Tournament will begin Tuesday, May 18 and conclude Friday, May 21. The teams with the seventh-highest and eighth-highest winning percentages in each conference will each have two opportunities to win one game to earn a playoff spot. The teams with the ninth-highest and tenth-highest winning percentages in each conference will each have to win two consecutive games to earn a playoff spot.

Play-in:
1st round:
7th vs 8th - winner advances to 7th seed in the playoffs, loser goes to second round
9th vs 10th - loser is out, winner advances to second round
loser 7vs8 vs winner 9vs10: winner goes into playoffs as 8th seed

So 7th and 8th spots need to win just one game to advance to playoffs, 9th and 10th need to win two games. Max 2 games played.

Man, I'm stupid.  Not as stupid as that format.  I just assumed it would be 7v10, 8v9.
I doubt the Mavs would lose the second game, but that first game I have a really bad feeling about.

Me too. Only saw this like a couple of weeks ago

I thought it was 7v10 8v9 as well. It seems like the NBA is really good at coming up with half of a good idea.

I don't think the play in tournament is bad inherently like Cubes (who voted for it so he's a hypocrite), but boy did they really half ass it.
I´ll just say this: You are not doing a good job, if you can only build a team around LeLuka that finishes 7th or worse.
