They better not trade Maxi in an Aaron Gordon package.  YUCK

edit: I guess there is no such rumor.  Maxi is easily my 2nd favorite Mav next to Luka.

This is what I said the first time Collins came up here.  Any deal Atlanta makes with us starts with Maxi.  I don’t really like it, but he just makes too much sense in their lineup financially and positionally.

Mavs can't trade Maxi because of the Würzburg clause in the team's charter.

I guess we just threaten the RFA theft in the summer and tell the Hawks you can get a nice replacement player or Collins walks for nothing.

Hawks fans were insulted by the offer.

Maybe our bigger version of Trae Young with decent hair?  Send Powell with Maxi, so he won't be lonely.

KP is already complaining about his current role on offense. Collins complained about Trae´s usage in Atlanta. Both would probably get even less touches next to another high volume front court player.

Defense is an even bigger problem. Collins is a solid man defender but he is not a rim protector and not a real switchable perimeter defender.  Basically average to slightly above average all around. KP is a full time center that needs a versatile perimeter big next to him. Maxi is actually a good fit on defense and makes things a lot easier for KP. Banging in the post against Vucevic in one game. Chasing Kawhi on the perimeter in the next game. Rotating and switching around the defense to prevent difficult matchups for KP. DFS and Maxi really mastered the pre rotation in the last couple of weeks.

Would be a totally different story if the Mavs move on from KP. Collins as the high volume focal point of the pick and roll would be great.

2) I don´t expect him to be a star. I expect high role player impact but I am not as high on his defense as others. For me he has always been the definition of "mediocre" star. Can do everything at a solid level but has no elite skills.
This take right here. Unless it’s something favorable like Maxi/Green/Powell for Snell/Collins/Reddish with only 2nd’s to Atlanta.

It only makes sense if we dump KP. Maxi is the only thing holding this front court together. His partner is running back to the locker room when he doesn’t get his way. Why wouldn’t that be worse with Collins?

Quote:“It’s common knowledge,” a league source told The News of the Mavericks, “that they want another long defender who can make threes.”
Quote:Perhaps ironically, the same source said there is interest around the league in Finney-Smith because of the intangibles he possesses – lock-down defensive ability, team-first mentality and quite a value at his salary of $4 million this season and next.

The source said the Mavericks aren’t shopping Finney-Smith, but, rather, teams’ interest in him is organic, perhaps fueled by the general belief that Dallas is exploring the market for forwards, seemingly making Finney-Smith more expendable.
Quote:The trouble is, to acquire a player of Collins’ or Gordon’s caliber, the Mavericks likely would have to part with at least one of their valued rotation players – Finney-Smith, Jalen Brunson, perhaps Maxi Kleber.

In addition to a promising younger player, Atlanta and Orlando also reportedly are seeking a first-round pick.

Because of the league rule prohibiting teams from trading first-round picks in consecutive years, and because New York owns Dallas’ 2021 and 2023 first-round picks – the soonest first-round pick Dallas could trade is 2025. And even to do that, the Mavericks would have to remove the top-ten protection on the 2023 pick and convey it to the Knicks outright.

Quote:Conversely, 28-year-old Fournier, who is averaging 19.1 points, 3.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds, is on an expiring $17 million contract and probably could be acquired with James Johnson’s expiring $15.9 contract and a lesser supplemental package than Collins or Gordon would require.

Quote:As of Monday evening, two league sources said the Hawks are resisting overtures for Collins. Atlanta carried an eight-game winning streak into Monday’s late game at the Clippers and 23-year-old Collins has been outstanding, averaging 18.6 points and 8.9 rebounds in March.

Collins, 23, will become a restricted free agent this offseason, so if he isn’t traded before Thursday’s deadline the Mavericks could make him a qualifying offer in the summer.

Quote:The list of suitors for Gordon has increased in recent days, with the Nuggets, Blazers and Mavericks, along with long-time suitor the Houston Rockets, who had targeted Gordon in three-way conversations during the James Harden trade talks.
Hard to see the Hawks subtracting anyone with an 8 game winning streak.

I'm DVR their game tonight vs the Clippers.  Let's hope they get blowed out.  BTW, they're starting Huerter and freaking Tony Snell at the wing spots tonight.  So you gotta think they'd have at least some interest in DFS or JRich.

(credit to Dan who mentioned this in one of these threads earlier today.  JRich and Maxi for Collins and Bogdan)

Hawks fans are pretty delusional about the situation. I think the Atlanta front office is down on Collins relative to everyone else. The entire point is that they simply don't want to pay him. Now, they don't have to trade him - they could simply kick the problem down the road a bit and hope things get easier in the summer, but I honestly don't think he's there for his next contract. Someone is going to max him, and I don't think it will be ATL. It doesn't seem like their fans have come to grips with that, based on what I've seen.
I like the idea of Collins or Gordon, even if it would cost us Maxi , whom I love. But that still does not adress our need for a second star (who clicks with Luka, hence KP is not it) or a good playmaker (we need at least one or the other).

Also, for the Maxi critics: The only problem with him is that he plays alongside DFS. They are both nice glue guys but pretty much non-factors on offense. We can't get away with two guys like that. Since Maxi plays his role perfectly, has the miles better 3-point-percentage, is AT LEAST equally good on defense (I would argue he is actually better as a one-on-one defender) and has even started to hit some midrange shots - DFS is the goner. Maxi would absolutely thrive being the number 5 on offense, if that makes sense.

Who are these Maxi critics?  Not picking on you, but the Straw Man doesn't improve the argument, yet so many choose to use it as a device.  Everyone agrees with your view on Maxi.  It is what would/might make him attractive to Atlanta too.  But, players of Collins quality won't come here for our garbage.  So, something valuable has to be part of the outgoing.

(03-22-2021, 11:15 PM)mvossman Wrote: [ -> ]There is no question Collins would improve the offense, although at the expense of marginalizing KP by operating in his space and taking some of his touches (in a very similar manner that Powell did).  If our goal is to get back to the best offense in the league with an average defense then trading Maxi + assets for Collins might make sense.  I'm just skeptical that is good enough to make us a contender.  History kind of suggests that you need to have a top 10 defense to win a championship.  Maybe we can break that trend, but I don't see it.  There is a reason we start Maxi and DFS and traded for Richardson (and drafted Green and Bey).  We need to improve defensively in order to become legit contenders, and that kind of trade goes in the wrong direction.

Can't we say that any third star would marginalize KP's touches?  If Beal wanted to come here, do we say no because KP won't "get his"?  If that is the standard, then I fear we will never land another 20-ish PPG scorer.  Now, I absolutely agree that KP won't like it and I do have concerns about fit.  What is interesting is KP is having his most efficient shooting year ever.  His .586 TS% is .035 better than his previous best (last year) and way better than his pedestrian average in NY of .535.  This is the first time in his career that his is better than league average at adding points through field goals attempted and adding points through True Shot Attempts made.  And yet he seems unhappy (and is killing us defensively to the point we are not top 10, but 24th)  I know, extenuating circumstances.  But, if extenuating circumstances have crushed his defensive effectiveness until recently, how come he is career best in offensive efficiency?

Collins fell out of bed hitting over .600 in TS% (Career .633).  He's been a plus to team scoring every year of his career.  He is flat out a much better offensive player than KP and should get some of someone's touches.  Atlanta is crazy to not give him more than 13 shots a game and he still gets them 18 a game (a Dirk-ish 138.6 points per shot attempt).  I know your point wasn't about offense (and your defensive point is valid and I like the Capela idea).  But my point is we will always be Luka and his band of merry 4th/5th/6th men if KP's feelings are the standard for adding talent.
I dont watch a lot of Hawks games but I watched the entire game last night.

Collins got almost 0 traditional touches.  He gets his numbers in the flow of the offense.  He got a lot of Powell type touches attacking the rim and a few Maxi type touches on the perimeter as the ball was being swung around.  I dont think I saw him get it a single time in a ISO type situation.  That's a good thing as far as his fit in this offense.

The Hawks were absolutely blowing out the Clippers up 22 in the 3rd quarter.  Both teams put their scrubs in the game.  Luke Kennard and Terrance Mann went nuts and got the Clippers back within 6.  Kawhi came back in and closed it out.

Oh yeah, Bogdan looks absolutely lost.  His jumper looks broken.  And Rondo monopolizes the ball with the 2nd unit so he doesnt really seem to know what to do.  He's not really a catch and shoot player.

I don’t suppose there’s anyway for us to get both Brogdon and Sabonis? I know Sabonis has his defensive limitations but man I think him and Luka would fit like a dream on offense. And he would solve our rebounding problems.
