+ KP out for like 15 games.
I know other teams have injuries and hardships too but Mavs have really flown under the radar in terms of how good they really can be. With easiest schedule remaining, barring injuries and viruses i think they will really make a push and have a chance for a really good result this year. It all comes down to a matchup tho.

Lebron going down with an injury + no AD for the foreseeable future might mean the Lakers crater in the standings. That also means a team that would normally be lower might be a 2nd/3rd seed this year. If the Mavs can snag the 6th seed they might surprise someone...

Disagree (in terms of finishing higher is better this year, although play in...). I would like to avoid Jazz, LAL and LAC. Jazz will finish in top 2 im pretty sure, but i dont know who the second team is. Jazz, Suns, Lac, Lal, and Denver will finish in top 5 in my opinion. For 6th its between Dame, Luka and Curry.

Problem is if we finish 6th it might be Lac, 4-2 another 1. round exit.

I would much prefer finishing 7th and facing Suns in case they finish second. But then its extra work with play in and it can all go wrong.

Its gonna be a lottery+Injuries. And we have KP.

Personally i think if we can somehow avoid healthy Lakers, Clippers or Utah in the 1 round, even WCF is possible.

Collins fell out of bed hitting over .600 in TS% (Career .633).  He's been a plus to team scoring every year of his career.  He is flat out a much better offensive player than KP and should get some of someone's touches.  Atlanta is crazy to not give him more than 13 shots a game and he still gets them 18 a game (a Dirk-ish 138.6 points per shot attempt).  I know your point wasn't about offense (and your defensive point is valid and I like the Capela idea).  But my point is we will always be Luka and his band of merry 4th/5th/6th men if KP's feelings are the standard for adding talent.

A couple of points:

My concern with Collins offensive fit was less about taking away overall touches, and more about him operating in KP's space.  Last year Powell clogged the paint and turned KP into a glorified 3&D center.  It was not until Powell went down and we switched to 5 out that we unlocked his full offensive game.  This is probably why his TS is a career high this year.  In this sense, Beal is not a good comparison as he would fit perfectly with KP and Luka offensively (although he would present some of the same defensive concerns that Collins does).

I realize the offense operated even more efficiently with Powell (although there may be some sample issues with that assessment including most of Luka and KP missed time in second half) but at the expense of defense (as Collins would be).  Not sure if there is a player out there that can play well at the rim, but not hurt you on defense with KP.  Maybe Gordon?

Also, I am not going to argue which player is better offensively, but TS% is just one metric.  It does not take into account things like the unique gravity of a center with a quality high volume 3 point shot.
Provided he's still on the roster, of course.

Johnson will be used in a similar fashion to our previous TPE.

I can't wait for Cuban to get on the radio and be like man we were "this close" to a "blockbuster" trade which usually means that another attempt to grab Danny Green failed. He is our white whale.

Remember...
The Mavs never missed out in free agency. They just never had capspace. Dallas is a free agency destination.

I really appreciate the way you articulate your positions.  I feel like I've been part of a rational conversation where I've learned something and had my perspective widened.  I'm not changing my stance (plus it is probably moot now).  Just wanted to pay you a compliment.

Trade or not, I put the odds of Dallas signing Green this summer at approximately 90%.
