Melli gives an NBA team a 15th man who knows where to stand and gives good effort. I know that a fifteenth man can be important at times, but they genereally move no needles.

That should be his role. For the Mavs he was more of a 9th/10th man. Played in 23/29 regular season games. Started four. Averaged 14 minutes. Even played in 3/7 playoff games. I think he is a coaches darling for the reasons that you already mentioned. Not the most athletic or skilled player but a reliable, hard working and smart veteran that will make the right play (rotation on defense, pass on offense) more often than not. The kind of player that all coaches love to have on the end of the bench.

My guess as to what happened --

The initial trade was for JJ Reddick. Melli was filler. The Mavs never intended to keep Melli, unless he just wowed them. He didn't. At the exit interview, they told him they were not counting on him in their plans. That decision would of course have been subject to reconsideration under new management, who evidently did not (try to) persuade him to stay. He gauged his future in the NBA to be somewhat dubious. So he decided to just move on.

If anyone has contradictory information, feel free to update us. It could be that Nicolo was just homesick for Milano, and the Mavs obliged him by letting him go. Who knows?

lol, I see what you did there

Is Melli a bit expensive for a guy that low on the totem pole? I haven't checked the salaries of all the teams' 11-15 men, so I really don't know.

Would add that he couldn´t expect more than the vet min. Probably makes just as much or even slightly more in Italy.

Yes, that was what I was guessing. I don't know if we'll find out what he will make in Italy, but it would be of passing interest.

I can see why Melli might want to return to Italy, even if he's not going to make more. He could stay in the NBA as an end of the bench player, or play in Italy, where he is a star.
FWIW, Followill reports the Melli departure as "not terribly surprising."

Yeah, yeah...so you weren't surprised.

Is this Fake News?

Where can I issue a formal complaint about basically zero Mavs news for a week or so? Even Cuban isn't blabbering to the media.
I'll take 2 GOATS for $1000 Alex...

Interesting. People around the league give him a lot of credit for Giannis development.

I need a tag update to Don't Pay THJ.

If he takes sixth man money to stay and doesn't prevent us from getting the other players we need, that is good news.

I think KP has to be gone for the sake of any roster-building involving the retention of THJ to be successful - either in a three-team sign-and-trade for our target, or by virtue of clearing more cap room. We need three new starters, and at least two of them are going to cost a lot of money.
