That was yesterday. I posted some of it.

So he changed number huh?   Figured as much as this is a new start.
Skin was on the Locked-On podcast with Isaac today.  Repeated again that Wood could be outgoing in a deal between now and TDL.  Not predicting it, just pointing out that he is an expiring contract who will have probably shown good things between now and then and might provide some of the necessary value in a deal…especially if we remove protections from 2023 and can trade 2025+ at the TDL.

He also had an interesting theory about why Brunson wasn’t offered an extension prior to the last TDL (even if he would have likely turned it down).  They had something going and the chance of that happening was more beneficial than the risk of losing Brunson was harmful.  Skin was probably first among media members to be talking about Brunson likely being gone.  I think he has more credibility (and probably connections) on the topic than most.

He pumped some sunshine for sure, but he also said Dallas blew it by assuming they could do some kind of S&T with NY (which died when Detroit was willing to eat so much salary).  If you are still wallowing in a post Brunson-funk, I’d probably stay away from listening.  It will just cause you to put out another half dozen ‘the front office sucks’ posts.  If you are genuinely interested in possible theories besides total ineptitude, it is a good listen.

This is the only thing that really makes sense IMO (the "total ineptitude" theory makes zero sense to me). We know the NBA is constantly in conversation about possible deals and frameworks and that when trade discussions get serious that there have almost always been previous conversations in the months and years previous. So it makes sense that the Mavs had exploratory conversations with some team(s) after Nico took the job and thought they had some possible deals lined up that they really liked for the TDL involving JB. Then those fell apart once things got closer. Sure, that is still a "fail" by the front office, but that kind of fail makes MUCH more sense than "total ineptitude."

Side question for you @"DanSchwartzgan": Do you remember if there were any deals that happened at the TDL with teams that might have been interested in JB?

Yeah this also makes sense. I would never have thought DET would be willing to use up so much of their caproom to just eat salaries. Again, a "fail" by the FO, but not an unreasonable assumption on their part.

I'll have to give it some thought, but wouldn't it almost have to be NY?  Everyone knew of their interest and without a Brunson extension in place, giving up anything of value would have been a risky deal for any other team.

My guess is a Robinson for Powell swap and then a $10mm ish backcourt guy for Brunson swap.  Maybe Burks.  The trick with a Brunson trade is how little money he made.  We know they felt the need for a Robinson-type player based on the signing of McGee.  Now you need to replace the backcourt hole with someone making about what Powell makes.  I get that we all think a three-headed PG lineup is a necessity after seeing how it worked.  But, it wasn't that way in February as we didn't have that luxury until after the KP deal.  So, could have been a secondary creator like Burks if we knew we were also getting SD in a separate deal.

In hindsight, Robinson/Burks would look pretty good right now.
I 100% believe Skin is a great source. After all, his source is Mark Cuban.

Do people really think Skin is some kind of non biased reporter?  He says what Cuban wants the public to hear. That’s how he gets his access.

I think he was fair minded about Brunson.  He said he knew before the playoffs Brunson would not be back.  Makes you wonder if it was common knowledge among the team.

He makes the point that Brunson is not an asset once he is paid 27/28 million.  I agree with that.

It seems useless to infer what Cuban or Nico say anymore.  "Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies"

Anyway, I thought it was worth my time.
He’s more of an asset on your roster at $26 million than he is on another team’s roster.  He’s a good young player, and the market is just going up up up.
I don’t think he’ll be worth $27M next year, but there is a good chance he’s worth $25M in year 3 and 4 of the contract. However, the Mavs would have had to best that offer to retain him. Depends on the day for me. I go back and forth on should we have just paid him or let him go. Not getting anything for him is terrible, terrible asset management no matter how you slice it though.

Value is a hard one for me to wrap my head around these days for sure.  I think we need to keep in mind that we are a bottom tier destination city/organization and we will always need to overpay.  Jalen at north of 25m might not be a highly attractive trade piece but I also don't think it makes him a negative asset either.

Many days I have landed on this.
One other thing about Cow’s reply. If we have to overpay the Powell and Burke types in the NBA, we’re less than the other city destinations.

Powell's probably not the best example.  I think because the team was bad, the Mavs rewarded a great teammate and one of their hardest worker and hoped he'd help carry Dirk's work ethic forward.  Burke and WCS I'd put more in the "MBT are desperate morons" bucket.

McGee and Crowder are the better examples in my view.  I don't think McGee's dollars are an overpay, he made and earned 5m last year.  We did get him to pick us by giving him the extra year.  Not giving the extra year is why Crowder went to the Suns and not us.

And if I were a free agent, I'd want more money or years since going to Dallas means I'm probably going to get traded before my contract is up.  That costs money and puts stress on my family.

Powell is a great example. They took overpaying to another level by extending him cause even if he didn’t get injured the extension was an overpay. Bidding against ourselves overpay.

The problem with Powell as an example is that he wasn't going to go anywhere else.

While I get what you’re saying, I think overpaying is overpaying. If he wasn’t going to leave, all the more reason to get a hometown discount.
