Don't answer the phone when Rudy calls

Couldn't agree more.
There's some great JB stuff in today's Locked on Mavs

After the first game I was reminded of his past struggles to finish against long defenders. Happily eating crow. His floater and midrange game has been incredible. Even more crafty than Luka.
Kidd also deserves some praise. Targeting Mitchell unleashed the Mavs guards. Wasn´t aware of it but he has to be one of the worst defenders in the league.
This tweet was a couple down from the one above. Such a cool look at the defense.

Was Mitchell always like this or did he just check out this season? He has all the tools to be at least a solid defender. If he wants to

Just like GSW shooters have learned from Curry, Brunson has learned from Luka. Its not a COINCIDENCE he is doing this move.

That's actually crazy. It's so similar that it means they had to have worked on it together right?

I actually have no idea. I always thought of Mitchell as an above average defender and it was everyone else on the Jazz that failed and put Rudy on an island.

Maybe Mitchell really has checked out, or maybe in Utah the spotlight was never bright enough on him to get critiqued nationally for his defensive effort.

Now play some clips of Hakeem Olajuwon. He did tgat a few times in his career, albeit not from the top of the key.

That's a good take in the time machine. And it's true.

However, I think Brunson has really picked up on how effective that rocking motion actually is on aggressive defenders. He probably got it from Luca, but we'll never know for sure.

Here's the thing though. The Mavericks have two of the best guards in the league at penetration in the paint and efficiency. I don't see a lot of these rocking moves from all that many guards, and we have two of them who do that very well. It's probably not just coincidence that they have the same dance moves when they get in the paint.
According to the piece below, Brunson would sign the max extension (55 for five years) in January, but Mavs didn't offer it. Good job...

"n January, I thought he did enough where he deserved [the extension]. I said, 'Hey, take the money, man.' He wants security. He wants to live here. And they declined."

Plenty of interesting stuff in this piece. Mavs were offering Brunson, #18 and #31 for the pick that would get them Haliburton. New York was one of the teams that rejected the offer and rather picked Toppin

" League sources say the Mavs have no intention of cooperating in potential sign-and-trade scenarios."

It says 55/4 in the piece was the possibility last summer, but that the Mavs simply never made the offer. Furthermore they tried to trade up using Brunson + #18 + #31 for Hailburton. Well that´s good information to have, since it will surely help when Brunson makes his decision that the Mavs showed interest and loyalty to re-sign him.

Also Brunson was 24 year old, averaging 13/3.5/3.5 in just 25 MPG and shooting 50/40/90. That was not worth $13.75M per year, but 30 year old THJ averaging 17/3/2 in 29 MPG shooting 44/39/82 is worth $18.75M per year.

It says Brunsons dad was asking for it again in January - the paragraph I copied.

Brunson at that contract was a very good deal. Brunson was averaging 18 ppg in december. Even if you had doubt about the long term fit, that contract would be a great asset in the summer. If the claim is true, that was a fail by Mavs
Quote:"We've got to figure out if Dallas wants him. Not words," Rick Brunson says. "Ain't no discount. So don't put it on us. Don't tell me you love me. Show me."

Quote:Dallas could have signed Brunson to a four-year extension for as much as $55.5 million before the season, but the Mavs didn't offer it then nor did they engage in negotiations with Brunson's representatives. He was coming off a disappointing first playoff series of his career, as former Mavs coach Rick Carlisle drastically cut Brunson's minutes in the final few games of the seven-game exit against the LA Clippers.

Quote:Nor were the Mavs willing to make that commitment midseason, when Brunson had transitioned from sixth man to starter and was thriving. An extension would have handcuffed the Mavs from including Brunson if a trade for a star materialized. Dallas offered the extension immediately after the Feb. 10 trade deadline, when Mavs forward Dorian Finney-Smith signed an identical deal.

"I told him once the season is started, that's it," Rick Brunson says. "I told the Mavericks, 'Once the season is started, there's no contract talk,' and I went back against my word. In January, I thought he did enough where he deserved [the extension]. I said, 'Hey, take the money, man.' He wants security. He wants to live here. And they declined.

"He didn't turn s--- down. Y'all declined first. When y'all came back to him, we said, 'Hey, we just want to finish out the season and go from there.'"

Quote:NBA pro personnel scouts and executives polled by ESPN for this story anticipate that the floor for Brunson's next contract will be an average annual salary of $20 million. The high end of the estimates range around $25 million per year.

Quote:"I've been with these guys for four years and I've loved every second of it," Brunson says, mentioning the close friendships he has developed with draft classmate Doncic and other teammates. "That family atmosphere is something that I love."

Quote:The Mavs coveted guard Tyrese Haliburton in that draft and aggressively tried to trade up for him, offering a package of Brunson and the 18th and 31st overall picks, league sources told ESPN.

Quote:"My point is, there are times when you have to make very difficult decisions," Rick Brunson says. "I've made it very clear to Leon, 'I love you to death. Your son works for Jalen, represents Jalen, but this is about Jalen.' The one thing about Leon is he knows that. He raised Jalen that way, too.

"It's about what's best for Jalen. Leon wouldn't never talk to me again. The question I have, is it a good fit in New York? We don't know, because we have to sit down and figure it out [and evaluate the] draft. July 1 is a long way away."
Brunson at $13M per year starting and going for 4 years would quite possibly be the best contract in the league right now.
My takeaways from the article:

1) The old regime tried to trade JB.

2) The new regime has not extended JB TWICE (once this summer and once in January) because such an extension would have kept them from using him in a trade this past summer or at the TDL.

3) Rick Brunson (his dad) seems pretty salty about the whole thing and will NOT be encouraging JB to do the Mavs any favors.

4) JB seems to love it in DAL, but I could easily see him wanting to walk at the end of the day. I personally think him playing so well without Luka will make him want to walk. My opinion.

Did the Mavs mismanage this situation?

Hard to say. I 100% support them in wanting to trade JB (I have been on that wagon since last summer and would have 100% supported trading him for Haliburton). But not pulling the trigger on something might end up being a catastrophic mistake (though not likely). Likely they will be able to money-whip him this summer and maybe because of his performance without Luka in the playoffs he will still be a very tradeable and coveted player/asset.
