Every team in the NBA tampers. Most of them do it more successfully than the Mavs, but they all do it. The NBA knows they do it, and has failed to punish teams with anything that comes close to discouraging what has become common practice. Even if NY is punished, the penalty will pale in comparison to the benefit of signing Brunson. That's why they tampered, because they can. The Mavericks should've tampered more

They should just change the rules to reflect the way the business actually works.

We have seen 2nd round pick punishments that were no deterrent to the offending teams. We have seen the Bucks voluntarily pull out of their purchase of Bogdanovic.

I find a 1st round pick transfer punishment justified, but unlikely. It really doesn´t punish the player either, who also participated in the tampering.

A 2nd round pick and that Brunson can´t sign with the Knicks is something that I could possibly see as a sanction that would be massive for the Mavs. It leaves them with a S&T asset that could yield a major return. I think the Nets would trade Irving straight up for Brunson.

Punishments never included pick transfers. Bogdanovic intervention happened directly after they initially announced the deal. Not to mention that the league isn´t punishing big markets. Worst case is that they have to forfeit a 2nd round pick. Like the Heat and Bulls this year.

Otherwise we are suddenly in the S&T business with a great piece.
Yep, this is no different than the Bog to Milwaukee deal where Bog couldn’t go to Mil then signed with Atl. Why the investigation hasn’t been tweeted yet is hopefully only cause no one has asked the NBA (unlikely) or the NBA is keeping it hush, hush (hopefully at this point). If there isn’t any kind of investigation going on right now? The NBA doesn’t care about tampering.

JB should not be allowed to sign with the Knicks. We then can open up contract negotiations with him and possibly get him at an even lower salary. THEN we negotiate a trade with NY after the ink dries!

Embracing a loser mentality or playing the victim isn´t going to help the Mavs.
I think an equally devastating punishment that the league could actually enforce is banning the Knicks from making any transactions for X amount of months.

Imagine being forced to sit out any trades/signings for a year?

And it's on brand too. Abuse the free agency system, be put in timeout. That'll scare the shit out of teams.

In that case, there was also an element of the player's previous team, SAC, negotiating a contract for less than what the player was worth, and apparently without his knowledge or consent (if you believe that). It was an anomaly of a fuster cluck.

They will come up with a completly new punishment? Why? Because it involved the Mavs. Get over it. No one likes a sore loser. No one likes a snitch.

I mean…no one likes the Mavs anyway, might as well add sore loser and snitch to the resume!!!!

Why so aggressive?

Why would they come up with a new punishment? I have no clue I'm just contributing to the ideas of already absurd punishments. Nobody is a sore loser here. Nobody is a snitch. Break the rules get punished.

Yeah, but if the punishment is not a deterrent for the crime the usual response is that the punishment increases over time. With an increase comes the possibility that the Mavs could benefit from it. And that´s what I expect them to do. They have lost their pride a long-time ago, when they crawled back to washed-up DAJ. So do the petty and professional thing: file a complaint.

Heck, it’s so obvious, Milwaukee should file a complaint! Better yet, going back to the Joe Smith (is that his name?) days, Minnesota should file a complaint. Anyone who has been given a penalty for tampering should be livid right now!

Not like we already had an argument about this a few days ago. Go ahead. Celebrate your pity party. Brunson wasn´t as good anyway. Didn´t deserve the money. Knicks suck anyway. Knicks are meanies. If I had to guess that sums up 1/3 of all posts since day one of free agency.

Yeah there are obvious consequences from the players side to consider like an un-willingness to sign with the team in free agency...

No one likes to do business with a snitch. If the Mavs care about future deals they should think really hard before they burn even more bridges.

I said it last year and will say it this year. I don´t think the NBA gives a f*** about the tampering process itself, but the consequences for the league

1.) they don´t want to be shown up by teams publicly displaying their ignorance

2.) they will start to re-consider that free agency now basically lasts 1-2 days (due to tampering) rather than two weeks. The NBA likes attention.

JD and the Straight shot hurt everyone, including you.

You're just too afraid to admit it.
