About the $125 million, my two questions are #1) Who leaked it? and #2) Why?

It's hard to see why anyone would leak it except for someone in Brunson's camp. So that goes to the why, in which case it's either

a) Brunson legitimately will stay if Cuban offers that number
b) He knows Cuban won't offer that number, and is laying the groundwork for (proper) blame when he leaves

If b is true, then the only response should be that Cuban needs to be run out of town immediately, before Luka forces his own way out. $25 million per year for Brunson is more than a fair price, and more importantly keeps together the team that made the WCF. It is impossible to imagine this team winning titles with such a cheapskate owner.

Agreed. Cuban should at least try to keep the band together. Oh my bad, he didn't do that in 2012. Dallas made the WCF this year, but they'll be hard pressed to have a return visit next year.
At the rate of 22+ per year i would just let him walk if money is so important to him over winning.

Imho there is a big risk we end up with a very expensive very situational guard who can run the show only in regular season or vs special matchups and could be quite useless against defensive teams (see the GSW series)

Though one has to wonder how big the cap will be in 2026 and 2027.

Surprised Cuban appears to be fighting tooth and nail to be cheap here, although I guess the guy doesn't really care about basketball anymore.

The cap will be a lot bigger in 4 or 5 years and Brunson will still be in his prime.  That is a reasonable contract for a guy that projects to be an efficient 20 a game scorer that can create for himself and others on offense while not being a huge negative on defense.  That contract would be an asset and very tradeable unless Brunson regresses significantly.
What if we know that Jalen does not want to sign here?  If that is the case then allowing numbers to get out is easier than saying I prefer my own team and New York (or Miami) is that.

Duncan Robinson...well that answers that question (not that Miami is the most likely outcome).  He matches the 50% of Brunson if Brunson starts at a slightly higher number than has been discussed (with 50% being something like $13.44mm) or if Dallas sends out another contract and Brunson stays in the $12's.

The question is how do you get the other $5mm or so needed to match the Miami incoming.  Could be S&T Oladipo to somewhere.  With the Harden number coming in in the $30's, Philly could also take S&T Tucker instead of the 76'ers using the MLE on him.

Next question...does Robinson at upper teens for the next few years make sense on this roster?  It doesn't feel right, but unless it happens, we'll never know if they would have considered it or not.

Not without further moves. Would need to move Bertans and/or THJ. I think Robinson is a better pure shooter than both but in the playoffs he wasn´t able to stay on the floor. Not big enough to guard SF/PFs. Not quick enough to guard PG/SGs.
Heat have ways to make something out of nothing.  It is Interesting they are included.  I play hard ball if I am the mavs and we will not help you here.  I don’t want Robinson who fell out of favor with Heat.  We will see what happens.  Heat have no way of clearing salary right?  You always have to watch the impossible with them.
Would you rather go first or last?

Mavs don’t need to wait until free agency opens right, but other teams do.  Why not take him sightseeing around NY all day Smile
Want no part of Robinson’s remaining contract but would consider something like Lowry + Oladipo (s&t) for Brunson (s&t) + Bertans.

Not in my opinion. He hasn't even been playing consistently for Miami, sometimes falling completely out of the rotation. THJ is a much better player, for my money.
Ya, the onus is on Mia to bring us a trade that brings back something we want in the unlikely scenario that JB chooses them. Bring in a 3rd team if they have to, but Robinson is not the type of wing we have been targeting.
I still can’t believe Cuban is going to let Brunson walk without making any attempt to give him a better offer than the Knicks. What an idiot.

To be fair, there is a meeting today. It's probably naive of me, but I'm holding out the tiniest bit of hope that after working the phones this week and seeing what (little) there is out there for them on the trade market, they might have reconsidered and decided to pony up some more cash.
I find Miami's inclusion annoying because it feels like if they want a player they just get him.  Pat Riley just looks at the menu and orders what he wants.
Who here honestly thinks JB at ~21M next year is worse than him not being on the team, that just went to the WCF, and lost to a dynasty Warriors team?

The answer to this depends on whether or not Cuban reads these forums.
Been reading all the posts from the last 24 hours and just thought I'd put my random, uninformed dirty dozen comments out there...

  1. FWIW, I've been in the "$25M/yr is too much camp" for most of the last week. I'm still (mostly) there, but hate losing 3-4 years of investment for nothing.
  2. This is all Kidd's fault. If he hadn't promised to get JB paid we wouldn't be in this predicament.
  3. If we can get JB to stay for $22-25M over 5 years, it will feel a lot less painful in year 4 than it does today. Especially if there is a Larry O on the shelf by then. Not sure the MBT is on board with that.
  4. NYK have cleared cap space to take in JB without any SnT, which itself is suspicious for tampering.
  5. I'm interested in the Miami addition to the talks. Maybe it's a smokescreen, but maybe Pat is trying to eliminate another potential rival.
  6. Miami would HAVE to do an SnT, correct?
  7. The announced meetings on Thursday are intriguing. I hope DAL gets the last meeting so they can respond to whatever he's heard.
  8. If the meetings are just a fig leaf for tampering charges, then DAL should get some compensation from NYK for participating if JB signs there. Maybe do an SnT with just a trade exception back? Maybe remove the conditions on the 2023 FRP? Why not both?
  9. I think JB is a great teammate and an asset to the Mavs, but this is Luka's team, and you know what they say..."if you are not the lead dog, the view never changes." So if JB thinks he wants to be the big dog, it's not going to be in DAL.
  10. I don't know why DAL didn't sign JB up last summer, other than he got smoked by LACs and everyone was wondering if he could bring enough value to be worth even $12-15M. Hindsight being 20/20.
  11. JB is going to get paid because of a combination of 1) 3 playoff games against UTA and 2) NYKs are desperate to at least look like they are trying to build a team. Personally, I think they'll go something like 32-50 next season, the shine will be off and the NY media will be sharpening knives.
  12. All that said, there is a certain perverse pleasure at keeping JB and kicking NYKs in the "Gortats".
So the Mavs offer is less money spread out over more years?  That’s embarrassing and insulting if true.

JB granting an audience to get the Knicks out of tampering charges.

The Mavs giving an offer that they know he will refuse but can claim they tried their best.

Both sides know what the deal is and looking out for their own agendas.
