NY is getting fair market value here for Brunson Imo.

I like Brunson a lot, but Fred is a significantly better player.  Similar impact on offense but wildly better on defense.

Ahh the famed Jake Fischer who said Kyrie would opt out and said Brunson told his teammates he was coming back.

I bet both of those things happened....i.e. Kyrie was absolutely threatening to opt out and JB did tell his teammates he would be back. Hell Rick Brunson said JB would be back on national television on April 16.

Things change. That doesn't make a reporter unreliable.

Bucks lost in the ECF. Middleton at age 28, got the max contract at $35M AAV. At the time, it was seen as a gross overpay.

"Can't win with Middleton as your #2!" Bucks figured, "hey this is the best we can do, we have no other choice, no one else is coming to sign in MIL." Keep chugging along and hope for the best.

Brunson averaged 18/4/5 on 50/39/85 shooting splits as a starter this season. In the playoffs, he averaged 22/5/4 on 47/35/80 shooting splits. Mavs lost in the WCF. Brunson at age 26, got offered $22M AAV from his incumbent team.

I was going to do something similar with comparisons but decided it wasn't worth the time. Everyone already has their mind made up. The winner in all of this is Cuban. We'll all watch and pay the same money, despite his failures. We'll argue with each other to no end.

I'm so tired of hearing future flexibility, trade value and luxury tax. Sign and retain good players, period!

Would buy them time from the blowback before the TPE eventually expires unused.

Killer is completely right here Imo, I also think this is all rooted financially.

Heck I lost a few bucks on my Nasdaq ETF, I’m sure Cuban is deep in the red there since ~ November (stock market is down quite a bit since then even the big index funds) and then you also have all the Crypto losses. Stuff accumulates quickly.

I will follow Cube‘s lead and cut some expenses here too. No more international league pass for the foreseeable future. Luka will ask out sooner than later anyway so a soft exit is probably the best here. I will root for Luka wherever he plays. Dude deserves a million times better than the Mavs and Cuban. No hard feelings when he wants out.

I blame the THJ contract and MC/DN.  Fuck.  I just want to move up in the draft in the next two years for a top talent.  Hopefully this happens before Luka bounces.

This shows that he's gotten better every year? At least offensively. Hard to know what is good/bad numbers' wise, with no real comparison. Would be curious to see what Lowry/FVV looked like their first 4 years.
Is there a possibility of trading JB to NY cap space for TPE and to remove protections on the 23 pick?  Seems like that would cost NY nothing with the added benefit of removing the protections while Dallas gets a TPE (I know, I know) with increased flexibility in potential trades.

Seems like a win-win unless I'm missing a cost to NY in doing it that way?

You'd be a Luka injury away from those protections being really, really valuable to the Mavs.

Thanks for that. I don't really know what the numbers mean but my first takeaway, without digging into it at all:

JB age 25, 4th season
Lebron 1.12

FVV age 25, 4th season
Lebron 1.79

Lowry age 26, 4th season
Lebron 1.79

BUT

FVV year 5 jumped to 3.29 and Lowry also jumped the next year to 4.01
Edit: Lowry/FVV Raptor/WAR is their last 4 years, not their first 4.
(06-29-2022, 06:44 AM)hakeemfaan Wrote: [ -> ]@"audiosway". The issue is not that Brunson now might be considered an overpay. The issue is a series of bad decisions starting with the previous mgmt not picking up the option to the current mgmt not evaluating a player they saw everyday to not give him a smaller deal earlier that he might have accepted.  That is what most are upset about.

You cannot lose your 2nd best shot creator, one who improved tremendously from the last playoffs to this year, and try to just focus on the defensive side. Was JeT a great 2 way player? We would not have a title without him. What great 2 way player do you have confidence that this franchise will correctly evaluate and get?  Even if they get and develop one that player will also most probably walk away.

You say this is a good decision. This is the start of Luka looking at the rest of the West and realizing he is on a team going nowhere and working for an incompetent management. He will force a trade sooner than later now.

I addressed that in my post. They should have resigned him at 4/$55. It was dumb not to. There was time for him to be resigned. They blew that. Letting him walk for nothing isn't smart either. But, continuing the mistake isn't the right thing to do. The time to fix this was previously. Now is the time to let the mistake from the previous regime be corrected.

They would likely need to give him 5/$125 or higher to keep him at this point. He wants an opportunity to run a team as a starter. As of today, this is a mistake of the past. Don't overpay to try and save face. That's my point. There is a good chance he wouldn't have come back at all after having a chance to run a team as a starter. Those opportunities don't come up often. Generally, PGs take them when they can.

I look for Dragic to come to Dallas now. Luka will be happy and Brunson will be happy. I'm happy for Brunson. I have a feeling that he would have ended up coming off the bench again in Dallas. You can only have so many starting PGs.

Probably 5/$140 (assuming the contract has yearly raises) would be more on par with what the Knicks are offering except with the additional year and if an overpay is needed, 5/$150 is probably what Dallas would need to offer for the money whip, if not more.  4/$120 if Jalen wanted a shorter contract to get to his next contract sooner though I guess that could be accomplished with options on the 5 year as well.
(06-29-2022, 03:46 AM)Branduil Wrote: [ -> ]When Kevin Durant left the Warriors, they could have just let him leave for air and saved a massive amount of money. That would have been the Cuban thing. Instead they took on the overpaid contract of D'Angelo Russell. Was he the right player for the Warriors? Absolutely not. They paid a huge amount of luxury tax for this ill-fitting player, later turning him into the even more massive contract of Andrew Wiggins. Many people mocked them for this, including me. Well not much laughing about that now. The Warriors did this because they're a smart franchise, because they recognize you don't just lose assets for nothing, not even "overpaid" ones who don't fit.

In contrast, the Mavs show no recognition of what the proper values of players are whatsoever. They offer unconditional, massive contracts to unproven players. They wildly overpay culture guys who would be 3rd-stringers on any other team. And they lose values rotation players for nothing because "Oh no, we can't overpay him!" The Mavs are nothing but a three-ring circus franchise, and Mark Cuban is the entire fucking clown car.

They should have locked him up sooner and traded him sooner. That's really what it comes down to. I don't like Cuban. He gets too involved. What I think people are missing is that I feel like Jalen isn't coming back because of opportunity. I have a feeling that even if Dallas tried to overpay he would still go. He wants to be a starting PG. There just isn't an opportunity for that in Dallas.

I wish Jalen the best but I think he will get a little exposed with the Knicks. I just don't think he is a player that can handle being game planned for. There is a whole world of talent difference in DeAngelo Russell and Jalen Brunson.
