mavs did but their offer was trumped by the pacer's offer. they had the higher draft pick. mavs simply didnt have enough assets.

The difference wasn’t a pick.  Phoenix gave away a pick to avoid taking back any salary.  Dallas was offering a pick, but would have sent salary to Phoenix.  It was a very competitive offer.  The Suns wanted the space more than our pick and were willing to pay to get it.

Why did the Mavs need the cap space? Smile

Turns out they didn’t.  But, they didn’t know that at the time.

Did they? Would have to check the timeline on Kemba to Boston reports. It was certainly before July 1st. How strong were those links on draft night?

Kemba seemed to be the main and only target worth declining that trade. Curry would have fit in the MLE, so we´d basically have replaced Wright with Warren and a net plus of five 2nd round picks.

Pidgeons on the roof... It is nice to have a plan and stick to it. But if they don't execute, you can't expect a positive grade for the offseason, which is what I am claiming all along. I didn't know they were in for Warren. Personally, I would say just one word if I was offered Warren for cap space - ok. I would even pay a second rounder or two. Instead they paid 2 second rounders for Wright and waited for a week for a date that never showed up.

Forgot this was on draft night, while we were still hoping for Kemba.
Is Zion the worst defensive player in the league? To be minus 27 per 48 minutes, while scoring 20 PPG can´t be easy.

Not only Kawhi, Beverly, LouWill and Harrell were out. Important cogs on the team.

Is T.J.Warren the bubble MVP? Dropped 39 on the Lakers in a 119-111 win. LeBron had 31 only one in double figures, Pacers held AD
to 8 pts.
Nope Luka is the bubble MVP so far...
Luka's been brilliant, but he's expected to be. Warren wasn't. The nod goes to him, or Devin Booker.

Hottest team in the bubble.
Even if the Suns (32-39) take their final two Tuesday against Philadelphia and Thursday against Dallas to finish 8-0, they’ll still need Memphis and Portland to lose once in their last two games to reach the play-in tournament.
San Antonio could win both of its game and will still finish one percentage point behind Phoenix for the ninth spot.
With all 22 invited teams not playing the same number of games overall, the standings are based on winning percentages.
This is how it'd look if that scenario played out.
  • Grizzlies: 34-39 (.466)

  • Suns: 34-39 (.466)

  • Spurs 33-38 (.465)

  • Blazers: 34-40 (.459)

Then they have to win twice against Memphis in that scenario?  10 game win streak would be impressive.  Too bad the Mavs will spoil it.
Mavs will be locked in slot and resting bs Suns is my guess.
Nuggets tanked the game vs the Lakers. Benched the starters in the 4th and barely lost to a terrible Lakers team.
I don´t even understand which team they are trying to avoid in the 1st round. 2nd seed would secure a matchup vs the Mavs but maybe they prefer OKC.

Meanwhile the Jazz and OKC are both trying to avoid the Rockets.

Western playoffs teams tanking worse than any lottery team. Bubble is a strange place.

After the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz had dueling tank-offs in their respective games Monday afternoon, the playoff picture -- as well as Oklahoma City's quest to keep its first-round draft pick -- remains as muddled as it was at the start of the day.

The Thunder sat several starters, including Steven Adams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, for their game against the Phoenix Suns. The Jazz sat Donovan Mitchell and then pulled the rest of their starters at halftime of their game against the Dallas Mavericks. Both teams lost, keeping OKC a half-game ahead of Utah in the standings.

Oklahoma City won the season series between the teams 2-1, and the Thunder will finish fifth in the Western Conference if Utah loses its finale on Thursday against the San Antonio Spurs and the Mavericks lose one of their final two games (against Portland on Wednesday and Phoenix on Thursday).

The Jazz could still move up to fifth, but that would require them to beat the Spurs and have the Thunder lose out. Utah also could fall to seventh if Dallas beats Portland on Wednesday and Phoenix on Thursday and Utah loses to the Spurs.
Even if the Jazz finish sixth, they're not guaranteed of avoiding the Houston Rockets, who have knocked Utah out of the playoffs each of the past two seasons. Houston could move up to the 3-seed by winning out (against the Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers) and having Denver lose two of its final three (against the Los Angeles LakersLA Clippers and Toronto Raptors).

Denver also could still pass the Clippers for the 2-seed, so the Nuggets have plenty to play for -- though they didn't look like it when they sat Nikola Jokic, Jamal Miurray, Paul Millsap, Michael Porter Jr., and Paul Millsap for the entire fourth quarter after playing the Los Angeles Lakers to a tie through three quarters Monday night.

Oklahoma City, meanwhile, still has a chance to keep the top-20 protected pick it traded to the 76ers back on Nov. 1, 2016, for forward Jerami Grant. The Thunder, after Monday's loss, sit in a three-way tie for 21st in the NBA's draft standings with the Miami Heat and the Pacers -- who play each other Monday night.

To get into the top 20, the Thunder will need to have two of the four teams behind them -- the Jazz, 76ers, Mavericks and the loser of the Heat-Pacers matchup -- tie or pass them by the end of the week to guarantee themselves at a least a shot of keeping their pick in this year's NBA draft.

Oklahoma City is at least partially in control of that destiny, as it plays Miami on Wednesday before finishing up with the Clippers on Friday. So, if Indiana wins Monday and the Thunder lose their remaining games, the Thunder are guaranteed of, at minimum, a coin flip with the Jazz for the 20th spot in the league's draft order. -- Tim Bontemps

What a CRAZY situation. I bet Denver doesn't want the 2nd seed, I bet they want to avoid the Mavs.
Mavs .600
OKC  .597
Utah  .597

If everything falls the Mavs way.

I could see Utah losing to the Spurs.

OKC would have to lose to the Heat and Clippers.  It is possible, but who knows what lineups will actually play?

The hardest part is the Mavs face two desperate teams (Blazers and Suns) and I don't see RC going for it.

I’m interested to see how Carlisle plays this today.  Would be an intense playoff atmosphere if he decides to go for it.

We may get a view of how teams feel about Dallas come Friday.  LAC and Houston will be the last Western Conference teams to play and may be in position to pick their opponents if the wish.
