Trying to get the taste of the Clippers game out their mouths.
Foul trouble translates to coaches and his teammates being stupid. Luka had for 4 fouls. Mavs are forced to foul to extend the game. Logic conclusion would be that whatever happens Luka isn´t the one that ends up fouling. But that´s exactly what happens. With 20s left on the clock he commits a take foul.

Um, that's exactly the point. You think Luka is going to play physical defense with 5 fouls when he is the team's only hope on offense???

"Luka wasn't playing defense, even less than normal".

You throw in these jabs and then act all surprise when people call you out on it.

Jabs? Truth, man. We all love Luka, but the truth is that he does not play hard, effortful defense (especially in transition) most of the time.

If you think Luka plays consistent, effortful defense, then your fandom is blinding you.

The truth is Luka plays less defense than his teammates most of the time and when he has 5 fouls, he plays even less. Just facts.

I say pay that man. He is proving to be the perfect big man for Luka. His defense has picked up big time. If they can get a reliable starting 3&D wing they are in business. I love DFS but his shot doesn't fall on the road very often.

They need a Draymond Green/Shawn Marion type player in the starting lineup. DFS is someone I've loved since he was a rookie. But, he's just a step below those guys.
If you would have asked me 3-4 weeks ago about Wood, I would have said he is not my kind of player.   Funny how opinions can change.   I thought I would have a full opinion of Wood and the Mavs at this stage.   I am still not completely there but I am certainly leaning towards we should keep him.   I do have a small level of fear how he looks in a competitive playoff series.   But give him credit.  He has done a lot of things, outside of scoring, that has really helped this team recently.

I have said for the Mavs to improve their talent they would have to make smart decisions (Not McGee) and also get lucky on a calculated gamble or two.   I don't think we are going to walk into acquiring a top 15 player in the next two years, so they better not put all their eggs in that basket.

I don't want him playing the same level of defense as his teammates. Because he needs 40% usage for this team to have a chance to win. Guarantee he played in a team that had the personnel to take significant offensive load off him his defense is a lot better and a lot more consistent. Even great two way players who have high offensive usage do not play with the same defensive effort as their teammates and take a number of plays off, but the amount of plays they take off is heavily determined by the quality of their teammates to carry the load.

Yeah I want him to do a better job getting back on defense rather than arguing with refs, but that's a different issue than the assessment of his actual defense when set. Someone like Lebron does it quite a bit too.

On Wood, I'm not sure how people are still not sure about him. Players as good as Wood aren't easily obtainable, and I think people are overestimating the difficulty we might have getting a similar or better player. He's a high efficiency scorer and his weakside shot blocking/altering, make up quite a bit for his lack of reliability with one on one defense and ability to get worked over against stronger bigs. The simple fact is this team is utterly lacking in defense anywhere else in the team, you put Green back in the lineup and a DFS and Bullock playing defense like they did last year he'd look even better than he does on that end.

No question, Luka shouldn't have to work as hard on D as his teammates.

And yes, not actually getting back in transition is THE biggest issue of complaint I have. Shut your mouth and get back, talk later.

So much this. This is one of the most fundamental, important things in basketball, and all the amazing things he does don't excuse it.

Ya, playing bad defense is even better than not showing up for it. I mean, he doesn’t even get fast break points out of it, which would at least be SOMETHING.
Luka’s defense has been notably better this season than last. I’ll stick up for him here. But it is weird how many posts sound like guys who like Luka and dislike most of the rest of the team. I didn’t understand that when it was Dirk. And I can’t understand it now.

This team has been ravaged by injuries and actually went on a winning streak nonetheless. They’re getting 38, 39, 40 minutes out of guys who weren’t even starters when everyone was healthy. The bench minutes are exclusively the DNP crowd from November. I’m really proud of em. Gonna be a rough next 17 games with 10 on the road and not many sub 500 squads on the schedule. So the pro Luka/anti Mavs voices here will get louder no doubt. But not me.

Go Luka! Go Mavs! Even (gulp) go Cuban!

I'm in the unique position of disliking Luka and loving the rest of the team.

Seriously though, the injuries suck but even when we were healthy we see some of the same trends we've noticed of late.  We aren't a top flight team and it is taking Luka to have super human performances to eek out wins against bad, average, and good teams.  We get thumped by elite opponents.  The win streak is a bit of fools gold as we've played a bunch of tin cans.

The injury bug seems to have caught a lot of teams so the West is a bit more bunched than I expected so I'll probably regret my prediction of us missing the playoffs but we are going to get drilled in a series against a quality opponent.
Not winning in Houston was definitely Christian Wood’s fault guys

Glad you agree  Wink

In any case, HOU is becoming a cesspool. Heard on Zach Lowe's podcast that whatever is going on down in HOU is REEEEAL bad.

John Wall really?

I think Houston has done a great job the last 2-3 years, despite their messy owner. Smith/Sengun will be studs for a decade. I still can´t believe Sengun wasn´t a top 5 pick.

They just lack that special guard that can put it all together just like Orlando (though Orlando is further along defensively, cause they have more veterans). Both teams have very good 6th man in Suggs/Fultz/Anthony and Green/KPJ, but they lack that star player with gravitation. You switch Luka with any of those guys, the records flip on their head and the league is scared to death of the Doncic/Banchero/Wagner and Doncic/Smith/Sengun cores.

Would be an interesting situation for Houston, if they land the #1 pick. Do you take Wembanyama with all the 7´2+ injury history and Sengun in place (with a Sabonis ceiling) or do you trade down and take Henderson, who is what they need.
