Full Version: THE CRUCIFIX: Cato: Wood isn't thrilled w/ his role...Will depart in the summer

For various reasons, I haven't been able to watch much of the play so far this season, but I have an impression that there has not been a lot of minutes with both Wood and Luka on the floor. Is this true?

The reason I'm asking is that it takes time to develop the productive relationship and both, in theory, should thrive from the attention each gets, never mind the other 3 players. It just seems like a real solution to the current opponent philosophy of letting Luka "get his" while staying home on everybody else.

Also, my observation is that a highly efficient scoring team creates a sort of defensive pressure just from the other team having to score enough to keep up. Leads to forced shots, loss of offensive rhythm, poor shot selection, etc. So actually giving Luka a high scoring running mate should help the defensive efforts. The question is whether Wood can be the running mate we hoped he would be coming into the season.

To me, this team is too good to have the close games (2 OTs already!) we have seen so far.

I'll hang up and take your answers on the air...

They are averaging a little over 15 minutes a game on the court together with a net rating of +17.  Wood needs to be on the court when Luka is off, but Wood is not getting enough minutes overall right now.  When he starts playing over 30, they should be on the court a good 20 minutes a game together (including finishing and probably starting).
Playing Wood less than 30 minutes in a game should be illegal
Wood made a sneaky clean no look pass last night if anyone caught it.  Love it.  Love that he is a willing passer.  He will make the unselfish swing pass when he technically could have taken a fairly open clean shot...but will pass it to a more open player.  Something someone on this team wont do...cough...THJ.
Coaching malpractice.
What surprises me about Wood is that he is a willing passer and plays within the flow of the game.

I would have thought Wood is a player who demands the ball and gets his, but he does not. If Wood has the mentality of THJ, he would score more. But Wood is more like Green than he is THJ.

Sometimes you just want him to shoot it rather than pass to his teammates.

Wood is a slick passer.  Seen some doozies from him.

I think he makes the best basketball play usually.   Cant ask for too much more.

But yeah...hes not taking contested shots...he will pass to a less efficient player that is open...is that on him?

Wood might get exposed on the defensive end in playoffs...but its not for lack of effort.  He seems to be willing to defend at least.  I just dont know how many "dumb" mistakes he is making on that end.

Like the acquisition thus far.
It's a tough situation for him but as much as I like is offense (that 'oop to Maxi was slick), he sure is handling himself poorly by arguing with a teammate on the court and throwing a tantrum on the bench for getting pulled for defensive lapses.  It's a contract year for him but your team is winning and you are on a winning team.  Maybe this is why he's never stuck on a squad.
Mavs view Wood as barely being worth as much as all of those spares he was traded for. They gave KP every opportunity to try to make it work because they invested a lot in him. But for Wood, they got him for nothing so it looks like they're not really interested in making him anything more than just a true 6th man

And Kidd keeps on adding fuel to the fire.
From even before the season started.

Good thing the Mavs have Luka (MVP) to get through the early growing pains. I don’t like the way this is going. Have said it several times, not to get attached to Wood. And think this team is worse off than last year. Luka has been the difference early but the immediate future is bleak imo.

Goodluck with the Mavs replacing him with comparable talent.
Luka can't maintain 35 ppg all year. Not using Wood to take some of the workload off Luka will hurt the Mavs down the road. I don't blame Wood for being pissed off. He knows he's better than anyone not named Luka. He's been saying the right things and putting up great numbers when he plays. Whether you like Wood or not, they should be starting him and playing him 30 minutes a night. They should be building up his value. If they end up not liking him, they can trade him for some value. They are currently hurting his value and for what reason? I don't agree with Kidd here.
If Im Woods agent...Im sending Cuban, Nico and Kidd and email telling them to not sabotage my clients next paycheck or he isnt resigning with the Mavs.

From even before the season started.

Kidd's far from perfect, but look at how Powell and McGee are handled things.

McGee sucked, got his starting job yanked and came in tonight for a handful of quality minutes.  His best stint as a Mav this go around.  He's not complaining.
Powell started all last year and got no meaningful burn for four games.  When his number is called, he gives maximum effort.  He's not complaining.

You want to butt heads with your coach, fine.  It's not smart, but fine.  Don't fucking yell at your teammates though.  You aren't established here and the established guys don't pull that shit.

And I want Wood to succeed.  His offense is great.  I wish he'd get all of THJ's opportunities and more.

There is no way you actually think this
Honestly after tonight, don't be surprised if Wood's agent doesn't start trying to get him traded behind closed doors. If that doesn't work, he'll go public. Kidd is playing with Wood's money.

Someone of his talent shouldn't be getting passed around like a bottle of crown.  I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop and we are starting to see it.
