Yeah exchanging Wood for Grant is hardly dumping Wood for nothing. They moved on from him with the goal of replacing him with Grant. It would be like the Mavs trading Wood for Collins and then saying the Mavs traded him for nothing.

Yeah, circling back to Dan's astute point that Wood doesn't seem to be doing anything "breakout-y" this season -- everything in the numbers looks about the same as it always has.

It's hard to know where that might take the situation. But it's a really good observation.

Some of you have been very naughty.

Yes, only use the numbers when it suits a narrative you agree with.
I don't really care what his previous teams valued him at. It's irrelevant IMO. Teams make bad decisions all the time, or decisions that suit the type of roster they want to build.

I know what Wood is producing at the moment for this team and how he fits in with our superstar, and it's better than a guy who was here previously in a similar position on a max contract and without the health concerns. Not saying he's worth a max contract, but I'd pay quite a bit to keep him. Especially given this team never goes nowhere with FA anyway, and we seem not to have the assets to get an impactful trade done. If they manage to offload him in a trade for an better more impactful player, I will be suitably impressed. Otherwise letting him leave for nothing would be a bigger failure than letting Brunson leave in my opinion.

I think that’s reasonable. Perfect, even. Less of a chance for wood to screw you with complacency, if that’s a worry, and if I’m not mistaken, that contract length lines up with some other big expiring deals they have on the books.

Honestly, I like it.

I'm just not sure the Mavs are in a position to say words like "they are open to" with Wood.

I like the plan of 2 years, but Wood is playing great and would most likely get a better offer in FA. Wood is in the driver's seat, not the Mavs.

Collins is a downgrade at this point, but I'd take him rather than lose Wood for nothing.

You think Wood will take 2 years of security instead of 4?

This is the main thing for me.
Wood's fit with Luka is just too good in offense, and if Wood is making strides in defense -- that's the kicker.

With Wood, it doesn't have the feel of "ÿou go get that Luka and I'm gonna get mine later".

Mavs are basically saying they're trading him.
Being "open" to a Wood extension is just a way for the FO to say -- "we did our best" to retain him.

Not sure, but I get it from the Mavs perspective, logically, and I sure as hell like it a lot better than “let’s wait and see what comes up at the deadline and if you’re still here, maybe we’ll talk this summer.”

…which is where I was starting to feel like it was headed. If they are talking, at least there’s a chance to meet in the middle, maybe?
Wood isn’t going to sign for just two years.  That’s ridiculous. The four year extension right now would be a bargain. He’s a good player. I’m not even sure he’d take that, but the Mavs need to try. Why else trade for him in the first place?
Plan Powder 2025 was my first thought when I saw that tweet.

It is their last ditch effort to keep Luka assuming no winning happens between now and then. Have only Luka on the books and let him pick the roster.
2 years for Wood does give him more time on the same team and another shot at an even bigger payday since he’s only 27. It’s the only selling point I can think of for him.
The Mavs still thinking they can dictate contracts is why they're such a clown organization.
gotta save money for that next McGee-type contract

I don't often agree with the MBT, but I can't fault this perspective except beggars can't be choosers.
Their decision making process must be hilarious. Just completely random:

Hardaway 4 years
McGee 3 years
DFS 4 years
Kleber 3 years
Brunson lowball offer

They’re going to ruin this the same way they have ruined every other big move since drafting Luka.

The national media will be all over this FO‘s incompetence next offseason after Wood has walked in FA. Hopefully Luka is smart enough to get out quickly enough. He deserves a top tier organization.
