This is what I was talking about in the other thread. The NBA does not want to deal with Luka and a rim roller. This was true last season of Powell, and probably extends to McGee and Wood this season.

For those wondering why the offense becomes so "Luka-centric," this is why. The NBA believes dealing with Luka 1-on-1 is the least evil of all options. The thing that should be encouraging us right now is that unlike Porzingis, Wood actually provides a second 1-on-1 option in the post. HIS post up game seems legit to me. Unfortunately, the Mavs haven't done enough to this point to force the issue there.

ALL OF THIS. ALL. OF. IT.

I think most of the league realizes that doubling Luka is a waste too. Make him work one on one over and over and over and score a crap ton of points, but be basically worthless by the end of the game.

If Kidd isn't willing to feature Wood in the offense, this season is not going to be pretty.
Wood and Luka PNR is the only time I really enjoy watching the Mavericks "offense".

I was about to say I’m thinking about canceling Bally.  Feels like I’m watching this team as a “job” that I’ve been doing for 20 years instead of because it gives me joy.  Luka complaining all the time. Everyone just standing around. It’s ugly basketball outside of the  insane passes Luka pulls off.

Powell was and is a good regular season player. He lacks skill, but he brings energy and effort. He may not be a great individual defender, but is a very good team defender, helping others a lot. His only offensive move is PnR. Unfortunately, this is where he gets exposed in the playoffs.

However, why Mavs felt the need to commit 20 mil to McGee is very difficult to understand.

First of all they didn't replace the existing overpaid 15 mpg player, they brought in another guy for that exact same role. If the new guy could actually do the job, he would make Powell one of more expensive bench warmers in the league - as if Mavs don't have enough of such guys already. The position that cost 10 mil last season costs Mavs 15 mil now. Moves like this are really what prevented Mavs to resign their second best player.

McGee in his best version is just a regular season player who gets, similar to Powell, exposed in the playoffs. So what exactly did Mavs really gain by adding him? The improvement (if McGee would actually contribute something) would be marginal at best.

For reasons that common observers of basketball have huge difficulties to understand, they promised McGee a starting role. It seems they are trying to convince us that McGee is a hugely respected NBA vet with several rings that was a key element in those championship runs and demands huge respect. Wood, who is clearly a much more talented player, needs to earn his position, on the other hand. I mean, it could be possible, but a lot of casual obvservers see McGee more as a clown thanks to his regular appearances in a famous basketball comedy show. I guess we don't know if his teammates see him in a different light and rather take him as a locker-room leader.

Mavs have the best post up offense in the league. Not only the most efficient team. Also second in post up volume.

I loved hearing Luka saying needs to get Wood the ball more.   I really like Wood in the post against a smaller defender.  He has been productive there.   Last night he was able to make the pass out of the post the eventually led to a wide open three.

Wood scoring at 1.25 PPP in the post and getting less than 3 touches there per game is criminal. In the same way that the Mavs make sure Luka gets looks in his spots, so they need to do with Wood.
